Simple fix to get working for 1.9 - take out all the torches and plates, remove the block next to the spawn pad and place directly under the piston, place trip wire hooks on these blocks and connect across with string. Working farm again!
Do yourself a favor when building this and start with the drop tubes and the crushing mechanism before you do anything else. Otherwise blaze, pigmen, and witherskeleys will haunt you all the way through. Also clear out the area or slab the area only when you are 100 % complete for the same reason. This is an extremely difficult build if you condition the surrounding area first otherwise it would be very very easy. Just so you know the landing pads are exactly 9 blocks from center to center then your piston blocks are one above and one out from there. Hope this helps :)
FYI if you build as directed the bottom row won't spawn blazes or wither skeletons. It needs to be one block further up. Probably happened because the version of ShowMonsters he was using showed spawns at head level rather than feet level, which is what counts.
Important notes: Unfortunately there are also other junctions that look the same when it's all covered in netherrack, but don't have the same expanded spawnable area. The visual difference is in the columns on the side where they have 3 small columns of netherbrick fences. The middle column has to be 4 blocks high, the other two, 2 blocks high. Only junctions of those kinds of paths will work that way. Others will have just their visible area as spawnable for the wither skeletons.
1.11 FYI: Pressure Plates no longer allow mob's to spawn on them, so you will need to either create a redstone clock to set off the pistons or change the design to use another detection (ie like trip wires etc)
Hey Xisuma, not sure if anyone else has said it but I think the Wither skeletons are avoiding being damaged by the crusher because they are more than two blocks tall. This means you aren't crushing them at head level, just like a normal crusher won't hurt Endermen.
I can confirm this is working in 1.7.2, although Wither Skeletons are not the only spawns in this area, they are the most prevalent. I cleared out a double junction area, and luckily it has no spawnable areas below it. It is solid Netherack. This is becoming a very nice build. I have an Iron Golem farm and advise you to use Iron Picks when clearing this out in Survival. Mine has 2 Blaze spawners within walking distance, so I can gain lots in a small space. Thanks Xisuma!!!
this is actually a very resource friendly mob trap, I've seen some that take far more blocks to build, and a lot more redstone. And in case you think its because of all of the iron blocks, you can use any block, including the netherrack or netherbrick you've collected from digging out the fortress.
I built one in 1.6.4 to 100% completion, and it worked perfectly there, so there is no reason it shouldn't still work in 1.7.2. Good luck with the build!
The pistons would push the tripwire, unless your saying to put the tripwire up 3 high, in which case the pistons would only push when and if a mob that was 3 tall spawned, also because of how tripwire and hooks work you'd lose the end blocks where the hooks had to be attached and the pistons would ALL extend instead of just the local piston for each mob. In short, not only would you lose efficiency, you'd get lag from the redstone and not all mobs would fall to the bottom for the crusher.
I love how xisumavoid reply's to lots of peoples comments which not all commentators can get away with. Keep up the good work man! Awesome tutorial btw
I followed this tutorial step by step. I removed all the possible spawn points in a 150m block radius around the farm, closed in the walls, Dropped the ceiling down about 3 blocks above the farm, Went under the lava down to level 3 and fill it in to level 31. Level 32 is lava. I built a spawn proof access tunnel from my portal to the farm and guess what. It works GREAT! You can use Mcedit to do the clearing. Make your frame using stone, something not in found in the nether.Delete the rest &build
I have 2 columns with 11 layers each. the tripwire is 1 block above the spawning area and the pistons are at the bottom and push the mobs to the side, where they fall down. I had a similar design to that from Xisuma in my world and the drop rates aren't even comparable to the once I get now. within 1 hours I got a chest full of TNT (had a sand generator running, too) I could even extend this version, but I need the resources for a second one in the nether.
You need a crossroad without a ceiling because the ones with ceilings have lower wither skeleton spawning spaces than the ones without ceilings. Hope this helps :)
they are their to stop the vines growing downwards and slowing all the mobs down and the vines are their to reset the fall damage so all mobs that are the same will have the same health so u can do things like time the crusher.
you don't have to clear out all the blocks, just make sure no mobs can spawn on them, eg. put a half slab on top, or cover it with lava, since there is no place for mobs to spawn on ceiling blocks, you don't have to remove them. (same with those under lava)
The problem with this design is when anything spawns on the tripwire, it removes all of the spawning areas under the pistons until the mob has spawned - whereas in this, every time one mob spawns, all of the other spaces are spawnable.
It's looking really nice, but I can think of a better way of making the pushers. You are occupying 3 air blocks each piston (pressure plate, block, and redstone torch), which lowers the spawning a bit. I like using normal pistons on the bottom, being powered by tripwire on the 2nd level. That way there is only 1 air block being occupied per piston (which is the piston itself). Look at Docm's Ender-Ender design if my explanation was poor :> ...which gives me an idea. I'll upload if it works!
!!!!! WARNING, 1.7.2 USERS AND UP !!!!!! The current design has a one block tall vine at the bottom, this does not work for mobs falling from the top levels. You will need 2 tall vines to prevent unpredictable fall damage. Based on this design, go down one more block for vines and under that put buttons, this will fix any random fall damage you may have. YOU WILL NEED TO GO DOWN 1 MORE BLOCK AFTER THIS.
If you want to use regular pistons- ------ get a straight row blocks any block and on that block put pressure plates, on any side of that block make a side that is just Redstone torches,so when withers spawn they step on the pressure plate causing the Redstone torches to turn off so if you got that GREAT! Next, on top of those Redstone torches put any block then on top of THOSE blocks put Redstone torches so when a wither spawns it will turn off the bottom Redstone torches turning on the top
Air blocks are what start the process of spawning a mob. The more spawning spaces and air blocks on the same level where you want them to spawn, the better your spawner
Hey Xisuma, while playing on my Single Player World, I discovered a Nether Fortress with 4 Intersection with the ideal description (Over a lava lake & no roofs above each intersection as well as having them all in a row.
um, no wither skeletons are slightly under 3 blocks tall, but at tall enough that they cant fit through 2 block tall envirements, so therefor u might want to tweak your design if u want them to come to you using pistons.
Xisuma, the wither skeletons dont take damage from the crusher because mobs can only take suffocation damage to the head, and the wither skeletons are 3 blocks tall
pistons cause suffocation damage, which doesn't work on the wither skellies because they're three blocks tall. Their head is above the block that suffocates the mobs... (although you would think that it would at least crush the rib cage of the skeletons:)
Yes, they do only take suffocation to the head, but the head covers two blocks. If you crush the wither skeleton with a block at feet level, it wont damage. If you do it the body or 2nd block high, they will take damage. At third, they do not. Re-test, you've made a mistake. Do you have a vanilla 1.4.2 server I can show you on?
That is a good idea but sometimes normal pistons would extend and the mob would be stuck in the piston arm. He will never get off the tripwire and will just stay there until he despawns.
Sure, with that setup, the pistons really won't crush them. They don't need to either, though, because the Wither Skeletons will already be down to only one life thanks to the 23-block fall. The crusher trap is there to kill other mobs that will spawn in the trap, like Blazes and Pigmen.
Xisuma, i wouldn't reccomend using glass at the sides because the light level does effect how wither skele's spawn you should probably right that in the description or put a text on the video, thumps up so he can see.
the vines are to control how high each the mobs fall from. if there were no vines, the bottom layer of mobs would be 1 hit kill, but the second layer would die. you don't want the wither skeletons falling to their death. do you?
I used Creative and World edit. Now that I know it works, My friend and I plan to build a legit version on our SMP server. It's one hell of a big project to undertake, I'm guessing it'll take my friend and I a month or longer to build. I should also point out, that we've used several of xisumavoid's builds in our worlds and not one of them has ever failed to work. So if you're having trouble with this farm, check your radius, 150m in all directions Half slab or delete them, then it'll work.
Xisuma, wouldn't it be more efficient if you used the tripwire-pusher design, like in Panda's new ender-farm so you could leave air blocks instead of the pressure plates and stimulating the spawn algorithm? At least that's what JL says... It seems to be working fine though. As soon as I finish my witch farm, this one is the next in the list!
For anyone that is going to build this thing, you only need vines and gates on the first floor, not on all. This makes it a little more cost efficient.
The video may have been recorded in several parts, one of which may have been recorded on halloween. Also, in a video Xisuma talks about things that would happen on halloween in Minecraft, so he changed his computer's clock. He might not have adjusted it correctly when changing it back. Another reason might have been that since the clocks have changed recently, the recording might have been over the two days. Think before you speak.
If it isn't to much work could you put a resource count (how many sticky pistons, redstone, etc.) in the description. It would be very helpful! Thanks!
Oh. I have just cleared my double junction area, and I was planning on just crushing all mobs. I do not want to dig down too much. Are you telling us that Wither Skeletons will not crush with pistons? For certain I get more Wither Skellies in the area you suggested spawning, and in my world this is at a really useful place. I got 2 skulls just digging the thing out. My vision is for drops from this, and no XP. I get loads of XP at the End. Drops are what I want from this farm.
It got really hard to make it on my hardcore world, I even got 1 wither head while making this "thing". However I still need to slab the whole area or TNT it to increase the spawning rates, but I'll take break for now. Thanks a lot for the tutorial
Unfortunately (at least in smp at the moment) some servers you can only find wither skeletons in newly generated Nether fortresses. And then ontop of that if you either leave the chunk/disconnect or the server restarts they don't seem to spawn anymore at that Nether fortress which is being reported many times but so far the 1.4.3 bug report doesn't show that it has been fixed. So right now me and many players on servers are kinda annoyed we have to travel to new chunks if we want them. :(
If you want this mob trap only for Wither Skeletons i think that you don't need to remove all netherrack like he does in the video you may just need to remove some of the bridges and i guess that will work fine :)
Nice one X :) Just a heads up to everyone, theres no need to put half slabs on top of glass as mobs can't spawn on it anyway, Also, why the fence gates?
hey xisuma i am a long time sub and i have two questions for you. 1) can this be stacked infinately for normal overworld mobs? 2)would it be possible at all to use lava in replacement to water in the nether to build a classic mob trap?

Wow. Building this in survival is hard. At first I started to build at a point. Then I realised it affected my 2 Blaze Spawners. So I am trying to convert that to a lot of Cobble spawn pads where I can fight Wither Skeletons for their heads every now and then. Close to that point, I found a double Junction. 2 Days work now, and it is close to being marked off with Iron Blocks from my Golem farm. I almost lost my Fortune III pick, but recovering it using the XP from KingHappy's Enderman farm. :o)
You've got that wrong, 1.5 is smaller than a steve, wither skeletons are roughly 2.5-3 blocks, just taller than a steve, who stands at just around 2 blocks.
Nice xisuma! any chance you could do a quick tutorial for a tiltable design using the observer block or point me to a decent tutorial for one? would be greatly appreciated as I'm solo clearing out a fortress as we speak lol :)

hey xisuma big fan, i dont know if this question was asked already, sorry if it is but i went through 12 pages of comments and didnt see it. did you place the vines on all layers or just the bottom ones? thnx for the read.

Excellent Tutorial. Nicely done Xisuma', cheers for the mod link too.
Wither skeletons don't take suffocation damage because their hitbox is slightly taller than 2 blocks, so their head is actually above the block.

yes, 5 hours will make very little difference. you need to invest a lot more time
It's also important to note that it's a square prism whose base has apothem 144, not radius. :)
The spawn-able area for the wither skeletons only goes up so high above the fortress, not all the way up to the ceiling.
That is a good idea but sometimes normal pistons would extend and the mob would be stuck in the piston arm. He will never get off the tripwire and will just stay there until he despawns.

Looks like I know what to do next in my world! Thanks Xisuma, great job!
Honestly you just made my life THAT much easier. Thank you.
You should use tripwire for one row instead pressure plate. it is prevent piston bugs
Crusher probably doesn't affect the wither because their head is technically out of the crusher block. Odd quirk with their extra height.
they can, but there has to be something above it, in other words you have to place a second grid of blocks over the original.
Will a ladder instead of vines work?
The wither skels are a lil bit higher than 2 blocks so that might be why they dont take damage from the crusher
the vines are to control how high each the mobs fall from. if there were no vines, the bottom layer of mobs would be 1 hit kill, but the second layer would die. you don't want the wither skeletons falling to their death. do you?

Definitely subscribed. You're very precise in your instructions. Great work.
xisuma you are one of my favorite on youtube
this was really helpful, I subscribed. Thanks for putting all the work into it!
Its updated... i wanted to find a better way to get it to you guys but i will make a video i guess :-)

i think you're doing it wrong, u need to remove spawnable areas in a 144 block radius
I watched Docm's video from the day before this one, I was seeing him see Wither Skeletons spawn everywhere in a fortress for the most part.
Nice video Xisuma, is this a project you may consider doing on Hermitcraft?
Wrong, the wither skeletons do take damage from a two high crusher, meant for 2 high mobs. The half slab that they stand on stops this though.
The video may have been recorded in several parts, one of which may have been recorded on halloween. Also, in a video Xisuma talks about things that would happen on halloween in Minecraft, so he changed his computer's clock. He might not have adjusted it correctly when changing it back. I think it won't break if you load it in 1.6.4 prior to loading it in 1.7.
(By "loading" I mean visiting the area so chunks load.)
If it isn't to much work could you put a resource count (how many sticky pistons, redstone, etc.) in the description. It would be very helpful! Thanks!
NEVER GIVE UP :P
Oh. I have just cleared my double junction area, and I was planning on just crushing all mobs. I do not want to dig down too much. Wow Xisuma, you're on top of it. They come out with the mob and you're there with a tutorial. Lol.
The 3 high space was conservation in case they ever decide to change the spawn space requirements.
no it wouldn't because the sticky piston pulls the knock-off block back, and putting one closer to the drop lane perminantly turns it on.
Thank you, I would have never thought of using them in that way.
Yes all mobs can spawn on pressure plates as long all the other conditions are met.
If you can't afford this then it wouldn't be suggested building one since the farm itself is nothing at all compared to making the area around it spawn proof which is really important for this farm.

find one without ceiling
A few questions about this. Does this work in 1.8 and if you have two crossroads close would it be 6 of the modules?
Ty chojnicki if u put just a repeater then the piston won't extend smart one
Nice xisuma! any chance you could do a quick tutorial for a tiltable design using the observer block or point me to a decent tutorial for one? would be greatly appreciated as I'm solo clearing out a fortress as we speak lol :)
go caving?
Wither skeletons are more then 2 blocks tall, hence the no suffocation damage at 2 high
Would it work above the bedrock layer? I'm thinking of building it there like you said in your latest Hermitcraft Episode to eliminate the hard part of conditioning the environment ;) thanks and awesome tutorial!
vines make sure no matter what height they fall from when they hit the ground their all at same health so its one hit
Awsum :D Worth the effort then!
why not? anything is possible
Indeed. Though, the minimum efficiency is getting much higher which makes up for this.
+ I can fit 2 more rows on each layer with my adaptation of JL & co.'s design :3
++ More resource friendly!
(Sorry for butchering your design, Xisuma!)
Mobs can't spawn on glass or pistons, but I don't know if that is different in the nether.
