Just got the Matriarch a few days ago and was really struggling to reign it in but this video and some others have really helped me tame this beautiful beast. I have a feeling I’ll be discovering this instruments secrets for years to come. I think Bob Moog would be well pleased with this synth.
Just got mine a couple days ago. This synth is something special and I’m never going to sell it especially after the moog sell off recently. This will be a future classic.
It's pretty much a 1960s Moog Modular shrunk down into a single package. I have the Grandmother (that I support with 9U of Eurorack for more filters, oscillators, etc.); it is an excellent synth. The Matriarch builds on that to make something really nuts.
Good demo! Another neat trick is taking advantage of using an expression pedal to control things like filter cutoff, LFO rates, attenuator rates, delay rates, etc. The Matriarch is an electronic music playground!
This is very nice demonstration of the fm/rm/am patches. Now, it is important to notice smt - if you for any reason change keyboard voltage output from default +-5 to 0-10 (velocity, aftertouch, mod wheel), it might not play your filter tracking correctly - for instance, if your velocity output is 0-10 velocity effect will be almost none (softest touch will be the same as the hardest one). I was tracking filter as in the last patch and noticed that tracking doesnt work under certain C with 0-10V of keyboard output. Also, play with round robin mode, see how it can lead to different results. Mix in the external modular gear if you have some, even if its the smallest system, opens a world of possibilities. But also note that some modules will require higher voltage (and I am looking at you, Doepfer). My point - do not mess with CV values if you don't have external gear, leave them as default. Matriarch is one of the most beautiful instruments I've ever had in my 30 years of dealing with electronic music.
Amazing video, please do more Matriarch patching! Just one thing though, it was frustrating trying to follow where each cable was going and I needed to follow the video a few times and made mistakes. It would help so much if we could watch you creating the patch from scratch or if a patch diagram was included.
Not a Synth head but love playing them and for anyone wondering how it is without any modulation? its great as just a 4 osc synth with an an amazing delay and beautiful sound. I might try to get into the patching a bit more, I do use an expression pedal into the filter which I love but all the rest is Greek to me. Anyway by far the finest synth I've owned. Unless of course they release a simple 4osc mono version with the Delay and Spring reverb with no patch's and built in velocity and aftertouch. Dream Synth for sure.
makes me wish the grandmother's attenuator was voltage controlled as well. i have some in my eurorack that's always hooked up to the GM, but it would still be nice to have an extra vca built in.
Thank you for uploading this. Question about the patch starting around 17:00 - Where are the Wave Outs of Oscillators 3 and 4 connected? What is plugged into the input of the upper Attenuator of the Utilities module next to the Modulation module?
So ive got 2 questions .. the 4 utilities at the top can be inputs or outputs correct? And my 2nd question is whats the differences between cv IN and the normal Input?
I really have issues to understand words with T spoken without T. I really don't know what an inpu is. Or attanuaer. Sorry but it's hard for me to listen to it. But the optical video quality is very good. :) Other speaker next time please.
I think your synchs aren’t working - they cascade from left to right. So any light not on indicates neither that one nor the ones to the right are synched. So all your patches where Osc 2 is not synched have none synched even though the lights of 3 and 4 might be on.
That's what I figured. In a video I made about the attenuators I admit that I haven't got a clue. Your right, the sound starts on the left and works it way to the right. So when I run a wire, I have my output on the right side and my input on the left, but I still can't anticipate the results.
What do you mean. I use to have a computer with midi in, thru, and out, but I couldn't effect my keyboard with the computer. That was 20 years ago. My wife thru out my computer at a recycling facility without keeping the midi hardware. I wanted to break her neck. She said I wasn't using it so she figured out it was junk. She is an idiot. I told her never to touch me equipment again.
Great video ! If anyone that owns a matriarch or just interested in it please come join our Facebook group called “ Moog Matriarch Family “. All welcome 🙏🏻
that thing he does with his finger on a knob that he copied from the dweeb at elektron to try to look like an artist is incredibly annoying. Just grab the farkin knob and turn it, genius
Again, thank you. This guy is just saying a bunch of gobbledygook with no meaning. He sure does sound smart. This video is meaningless. It's in the comments where I actually learn something.
It is very nice to listen to but I can't repeat it on my matriarch because I cannot follow your patches. Sorry - bad explanation in my eyes. I hoped for more which could give me a better understanding.
6:28 Thank you. He isn't showing where some wires output comes from. I made a video on my Matriarch attenuators and I basically can't just make a patch for a violin sound. You can draw a patch on the diagrams, but when you, at a later time, follow the diagram, the patch doesn't sound the same. So in my videos I admit that I haven't a clue how a patch effect will resault. It's like the movie A Nightmare Before Christmas where Jack Skelington is trying to figure out what Christmas means, so he does all these experiments, gets frustrated and bangs his head.

Love the sounds coming out of the Matriarch. Def one of the most interesting synths available atm..

Yea, it’s a deep dive man. A true fucking journey. Not meant for anyone who isn’t willing to learn and explore mid workflow.
Beautifully done. A real knowledge of voltages and how to control them. I think most would never have considered using the attenuators as such.
Great sounding matriarch patches! Excellent!!! Some patch sheets would be very helpful - thank you!
Just screen shot and redo it when he reaches a sound you love...
this guy is amazing, perfect voice for presenting something like this too
You're a wizard! Really impressive sounds! I'll probably need to rewatch several times but it's great demo on patching.
Your great delivery makes these exactly what is needed at the pace it should be shared with to convey big concepts easily. That’s a major gift . 👽🙏

I can’t wait to get one. I’m then going to plug my guitar into it and make the world’s most expensive wah-wah pedal!
@@chitlun Yeah, I’m definitely plugging my guitars into the M! 😂😂

Wonderful sounds and lighting… thanks for the great video
oh hey, this is just me scrolling down to see if anyone has made any puns about Edd Butterworth's butterworthy buttery sounds. love them
mmm.. yes
No butterier butterworthiness could ever be found better
awesome, one of the best demo/tutorials I've seen on the !M
Great video, keep em coming. This synth together with a Eurorack case is heaven.
I think this is my long-term game plan.
I could see a lot of conversation on what would be an ultimate cost effective companion set of modules in one rack sitting above the Matriarch.
Straight to the point, just perfect.

Noted!
Seconded!
This is great. Should do some patch sheets and more vids on the matriarch!
Would be nice if you have the patch sheets available

Thank you very much! The patch and music since 19:20 with drums is only Moog or drums is another device playing?
This is very impressive sound design.
I learned little but I enjoyed it a lot. :)

this is kinda brutal following this with the camera angle cutting off the top of the patch cables so we can't follow the cable from exit to entry.
but FANTASTIC patching and sounds
So ive got 2 questions .. the 4 utilities at the top can be inputs or outputs correct? And my 2nd question is whats the differences between cv IN and the normal Input?
what would happen if you covered the synth in treacle and then sprinkled grated peanuts before emptying a hoover bag on it?
Great video. I’d watch more of those!
This video would’ve been so much more useful if At the startyou saw the rest of the settings on the screen so we could follow along
15:40 he says VCA but I think means Attenuator
in the matriarch the attenuators are also vcas. In the same way LfO1 is actually a converted Osc
Really informative video. Thanks.
My bank account wishes I’d never seen this. Tremendous tutorial man, more of this please. Peace ✌️
I feel u bro u.u
Matriarch is nice sounding!
Patch diagram PDFs please??? These are so cool, but diagrams would make it so much easier!
Either way, great job.
Sounds amazing, and this guy is really good.
God damnit I want this synth.
I got it guys and I barely use it as much as I should
Do you say Butterworth with no T's?
yes, although I think my mum would disapprove...
I really have issues to understand words with T spoken without T. I really don't know what an inpu is. Or attanuaer. Sorry but it's hard for me to listen to it. But the optical video quality is very good. :) Other speaker next time please.
top video -- please more

Edd is the greatest of all time - thank you for this masterclass
is it possible to connect moog matriarch to ipad to play midi on the moog?
Yes.

Serious ASMR vibes. I won’t complain if you make more on the Matriarch. Just saying 😎

Love it
Mind delicious ..

I see someone should have proof read the silk screen template.
