It never felt slow, and it was totally reliable. I’ve replaced it with the 335d Xdrive version, which is absolutely all the car I’ll ever need.
that 320 diesel, did you have the automatic? I had it in E90-form as Efficient Dynamics with manual, I found a bit (rather more than a bit) agricultural, but that can also have it's origin in the enormous tall gearing, and the low rpm you would be. Also driving away wasn't as fun as you would expect, the clutch judder was rather pronounced.. But: It was fast for it's eco credentials, and I averaged around 50 mpg (uk), while not even trying that hard.. Which of the following three is the best for a family man? The C-class Benz, 320d Bimmer or the A4 Audi? Just the standard version of their respective combi models, need perspectives before deciding.
Despite having 20bhp less, as anyone noticed that this model is only 1.6cc and not a 2.0cc? The "standard" 320d is 2.0cc but the "efficient dynamics" version is only 1.6cc.
All F30 316d/318d/320d/325d models were 1,995cc N47/B47 4-pots. Early 316i was 1,598cc N13 4-pot (same basic engine as in the MINI and various Peugeot/Citroën models) replaced by the 318i with a 1,499cc B38 3-pot.
I have the 320i Petrol and I have to say it’s quite good, plenty of power especially in fifth or sixth even, it handles ok not great but ok, the sport setting isn’t really em sporty enough, does 42-ish to the Gallon.
I agree with Johnny about the looks. I'm not too keen on these "grumpy/angry" faces that almost every manufacturer is pumping out nowadays in their cars.
BMW needs to bring back LED taillights.. It's one of my pet peeves on the new F30! I've told people that my 335i is a 2013 model and they were kind of surprised. People that don't know much about cars think that the F30 is like a 2008 or 2009 model. It looks really dated but I think it'll age better than other cars because it has a simple and clean "timeless" look
Marco WY Exactly- BMW needs to step up their game. I'm tired of people mistaking my f30 for a used 2009 model or something. There's nothing wrong with used cars, but shouldn't my 2013 335i look like a new car??
Iam Sam how much money was the E46 when brand new? My mom bought the E46 325i sedan brand new way back in 2002 and I recall her saying that it was $45,000 USD or something like that. That's still similar in price to the new f30
When I 1st saw this car back in 2013, every single other car, let alone BMWs instantly turned into dinosaur wagons with the styling of a shopping trolley. The Flat front yet bulbous hood, simply Epic, timeless and totally unexpected by BMW, what are the team on?? =D
+netweed09 do you mean 4 series gran coupe? Looks great! What car do you own? I'm been hunting 2013 3 series Touring 20d automatic. Like the styling of the Touring more than the sedan. Can't wait anymore, been watching all videos on RUclips.
interesting that people think a 161 hp car is slow. that is what the old 6 cylinders had in the 90s.The car does 0 to 60 7.4s. Thats quicker than 3L 6cc petrol from the 90s.
+slanahesh It looks great, and only costs 15k extra, lol. Welcome to the option madness that is German cars... Base price $35,000...as shown, $62,000, lol
So they compliment the C class left and right and give it a low score yet there is a lot they don't like about the beemer but still give it a high score 🤔
I've never met a Brit that doesn't have a permanent hard-on for all things BMW. They love German and hate Japanese. The same is true for Fifth Gear. If that car had a Lexus or Infiniti symbol on the front they'd all bag it for looking boring as hell. The Q50 they just reviewed is superior to this car in every way, it's in the same class and it cost less with more options standard...and they hated it. I like BMWs too, but how about some perspective. On the other hand, that new C class really is nice. #Bias #Lame
+♡ Kleinr Schmetterling ♡ (Liberty Schulz) Well, I guess it's all subjective. I think styling of this particular model is a bit boring. This diesel gets great milage but has no power...so if economy is high on one's list, then this is actually a plus (I prefer power). If subjective categories like looks/design are removed, the Infiniti offers arguably the same quality, performance, luxury for a substantially lower price. But I do give BMW the gold star for handling. I like BMWs, I'm a fan, but I think people get really caught up in what BMW means rather than what it is. Not saying this is a bad car...not at all. Just pointing out the BMW bias.
I like Japanese cars. But the Q50 is more expensive than the 3 series. The Q50 starts at over 37k€ here in Europe. The BMW starts for about 7k€ less. Of course: less options out of the box for the BMW. But if you add 7k€ to the BMW options you're about the same as the Q50. Then comes a matter of preferences: the 3 series is more about driving performance/sensation. The Infinity goes well for the US market: powerful and comfy car for wide (boring) roads. No offence meant. The Q50 would be something between the 3 series and C class. I'm not a fan of "too" comfy cars. I prefer to feel "connected" to the road than isolated from it. But if I had a choice I'd buy a GTR :)
+Oliver Toronyi Production of the e46 ended in 07 and I bought new in 2011...didn't want used. Also, wanted a hard-top convertible. I did test drive the e93 convert., but it seemed a bit feminine and for the same options as my G was more expensive (but really it just looks like a woman's car) . The M3 version was AWESOME but about 30% more expensive. That said, I'm considering the M4 for my next purchase. Like I said, fantastic cars...I just would like to see a bit less bias in the testing.
jason starek E46 ended in 2005, early 2006. After that E90 replaced the 3 series. Overall the quality went low. In interior they started to use cheap plastic, you are feeling less comfortable. Overall the style is feminine...worst series imo. From the new f30 definetely try the M4 ! Enormous power with super fuel economy ! If not try out the 435i.
+Oliver Toronyi Completely agree. The interior lost some points and the overall look was feminine. But the new M4 convert is great. Lots to choose from in the price range...also looking at the C63 AMG convert and the F-typeR
Ok the wheels on this particular model are waaay too small vs the size of the car. When you look at it sideways the proportions are just off with these wheels.
To be honest, I test drove a E90 325i straight 6 coupe the other day, the 3ltr one and it wasn't anything to get excited about. My 320D puts a smile on my face, the 325i felt like it should be my dads car.
+nagashree lingesh It's crap only for the rear space. Lovely looking car but, just no; Jaguar are taking the pi55 of over 10 years wait for their compact exec family customers, forcing them to go for the XF.
Why have BMW made a 320d that is an "Efficient Dynamics" Model, but then fitted it with an Automatic Gearbox, does that kind of defeat the purpose?? It'd be more efficient if it had a slightly longer Manual 6spd
THESE GUYS KNOW HOW TO DRIVE FAST, YES! BUT ONLY THAT. THEY NEVER HAVE BEEN OBJECTIVES WITH THE SCORING. CHECK BY YOURSELF WITH SANITY. FOR EXAMPLE: CHECK THE SCORE OF THE VIDEO OF "NEW VAUXHALL CORSA 3 DOOR (TEAM REVIEW)" AND CHECK LATER THE SCORE OF THE VIDEO "THE LEXUS NX 300H (TEAM REVIEW)" THIS IS ONLY A LITTLE SAMPLE ABOUT THEIR "OBJETIVE" SCORING!!!
These 5th gear group tests are just stupid to me...no word about its comfort, its environmental noise level, seats...etc. things that matter when you live with a car day by day. Same as in the C Class test.
As comfortable as a park bench. The steering lock is so bad it is like parking the Titanic. overpriced unfortunately and avoid M-Sport due to zero comfort levels. You are better off with an Audi, if you must buy German. Audi is a much more classier, comfortable, higher build quality and better priced for your money. If it is just looks you are after and zero else, then buy a BMW 335d M-Sport. But I guarantee you will curse it for its numerous faults. Cheers.
Ps it is a drivers car though, but not a lot else. Another thing I forgot to mention is that the rear view when reversing is bloody awful. This 3-Series is not what you think it is. Twats like Jeremy Clarkson may rate it, but he does not live with one daily.
When people talk about Audi build quality I always wonder wtf they are smoking. Audi, the company who consistently finishes near the bottom of reliability surveys. They are junk along with every other VAG car. Also, notice how not one of them mentions the reliability problems of the previous generation 320d. One of the worst engines ever made in terms of reliability problems. And it doesn't stop there as BMW will try everything they can to not repair your car under warranty. I'd love to know how much money BMW pay these media companies to spread propaganda. Its a joke.
I think the problems with the 320d is that it is not as economical as people think. I know this, as I have had a 320d and a 335d. I kid you not, the 335d is more economical by quite a margin. Reason being is the 320d you have to press hard on the pedal to get it moving. In a 335d it is quite effortless, hence the economy on the 335d is actually superior. The same applies to the noise of the engine. The straight 6 as we know is a sexy noise, even in the rather gruff 3.0 diesel engine. It still sounds sweet. But even with the classy quality engine, the 3 series to me has some major issues. Comfort is as I have said before, zero on an M-Sport and the steering lock is a complete and utter joke. Buy Audi for comfort, but even with the BMW's spine breaking comfort, it is even with my complaints, just still to sexy to despise, even with zero comfort and its overrated price. 19 inch alloys in Alpine white with extra tints. Mafio, Russian look, that just oozes class and get out of my way look about it. The round ring xenon lights are a class act. Just the comfort sucks do much. Such a shame 😔
+Warrantti its just their way of doing things for their customers who like that.. Btw bmw split 50:50 weight distribiution, they got big breaks front and rear so the cars are more stable ... normaly you get front wheel drivers with front big brakes small back .... so the cars tend to behave in other way BMW prefers its car to drive and handle sport and fun ... mercs and Audi tender more the gadget side beauty in the beast approach... bmw build it around handling if that cuts into styling so be it.. you know why you buy a bmw... if you dont know dont buy one...
What a stupid test, overtaking at 30 mph? Are you fucking kidding me? My 1.5L fiesta with 100 hp can do the same at that sort of speed. Try overtaking at 70 mph....
Drove a F30 320i in the UAE, slow, gutless and boring. I cannot stand why most European would want a sub-200hp luxury sedan. F30 328i had adequate power, but I was overtaken by a Dodge Ram 1500 6.4L V8 in the mountain road.... 335i all the way :)
+cococly because, unlike America, most European countries and cities are not build around roads. Hell most cities are ancient. Tiny streets, no parking, speed limits and speed cameras everywhere. What Europeans call a country Americans call their driveway, if you know what I mean. Truth is, that dodge would be a complete and utter waste of money here. That power would go to waste in most places, you wouldn't be able to go anywhere with it (tiny streets), you wouldn't be able to park it (tiny parking spaces) nor would you be able to afford it on a normal paycheck (gas prices being what they are here). Not to mention the phenomenal taxes you'd pay on that thing.
You are saying as if fuel prices in the EU is very high. We, in Hong Kong are paying 2-euros per liter for regular petrol. Hong Kong also has 200% taxes on all luxury cars. A normal Mercedes S350 costs 200000 Euros. But we still have one of the highest Ferrari per Capita :D Try driving in Hong Kong and you would see how bad tiny streets + millions of residents sharing the road is.
Thing is... Europe has idiotic emissions and consumption taxes. The taxes go exponentially higher after the 2.0 liter mark. In my country if you have a 2 liter engine, you pay a tax of around 50€ a year. If you have a 2.2 liter, you pay 150. If you have a 3 liter, the tax goes to 600€ and so on. Keeping this in mind, the minimum wage here is only 300€. You can see where I'm going. BTW, this was just one tax. You have insurance that also gets exponentially higher as you jump the 2L mark and so on. This is the law. We can't do anything about it but to suck it up. Of course, if you can afford to buy a brand new 3 or 5 series, then your salary is obviously higher and you should be able to maintain it and not be worried about fuel consumption. It is ridiculous for me that people buy a new 3 series and even go for the underpowered version just so they could save a bit on fuel. That is just bullshit. And yes, it's obvious that people in the USA prefer bigger engines because they feel pore powerful (we like them too). And they buy those cars because they aren't milked by the state as we get here in the EU. They only pay for the fuel they use. I like to drive my gas guzzling 10L V8? Fucking let me pay for the fuel, don't rip me off with taxes.

Love the way they talk about quality when bmw are very are best suited on the back of a tow truck
The 3 series with the lawn mover engine installed! You should have tested the 328i or the 335i or something. All tho I like my self some lawn movers.
Have the 2015 model. Love it.
WHO THE HELL overtakes at 30mph!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!
I gave you a thumbs up but actually i have a bmw f22 thr faster version and you can overtake a lorry starting from 30mh as its fast enough 😁
"Endless Money Pit" Scotty Kilmer forever
Which of the following three is the best for a family man? The C-class Benz, 320d Bimmer or the A4 Audi? Just the standard version of their respective combi models, need perspectives before deciding.
Kristian Nikolic if you're talking about the newest models the a4 is the best all rounder
Only those who haven't driven a BMW would doubt that a 320d would have enough power. Even the larger heavier 5 series is fairly rapid.
Hmm, I guessed 7 seconds to overtake. They clearly forgot that it's a modern turbodiesel.
It looks really dated but I think it'll age better than other cars because it has a simple and clean "timeless" look
thats interesting, some people asked if my E46 Facelifted BMW is a new car...
Iam Sam maybe.. she got the car more than a decade ago and she sold it 5 years ago! lol
+lovin f30 Done for 2015 =)
When I 1st saw this car back in 2013, every single other car, let alone BMWs instantly turned into dinosaur wagons with the styling of a shopping trolley.
The Flat front yet bulbous hood, simply Epic, timeless and totally unexpected by BMW, what are the team on?? =D
Love the styling
ijustinw The Gran coupe is even more amazing but sadly I never legitimately own one of those =)
+netweed09 do you mean 4 series gran coupe? Looks great! What car do you own? I'm been hunting 2013 3 series Touring 20d automatic. Like the styling of the Touring more than the sedan. Can't wait anymore, been watching all videos on RUclips.
ijustinw Older 3 series; Im trying to save up for an approved new 3 series right now. Were not minted enough for all that other good stuff ,)
That poor lorry got rekt by a communal garden on wheels. A good-looking one too. Doppel-rekt.
Y'all are a fun bunch
Hey can u review the 5 series the latest one and the one before that
Should have tested the 2.0d 184bhp.
interesting that people think a 161 hp car is slow. that is what the old 6 cylinders had in the 90s.The car does 0 to 60 7.4s. Thats quicker than 3L 6cc petrol from the 90s.
Yes, I’d give my Petrol 9/10 too...
There is a 184 bhp version of the 2.0d.... Then get it remapped :)
Why do Car shows never test a 320i Petrol?🤨🤔
Vicky... 17 seconds??! What were you thinking, my age, experience, and make such mistakes??!
Ideal car.!! Looking one of them
I JUST LOVE BMW....
I like Fifth Gear so much better than Top Gear.
Agreed, they do realistic reviews of realistic cars and answer the questions real drivers have about these cars.
nopoet406
except their reviews r too short...
This video quality is bad for 1080p looks like 440p...
it's too expensive when you add some extras. In the end its almost the same as a 5-series witch gives you a lot more for the money
It looks really good it misses those shiny m rims thou
Why all the measly 8 r8 h8 m8s??!
Is it F30
Yes
i dont like the way it looks, but i loved it very much the way it drives..
+bimosalexandres I hate the standard trim on the new bmw line, but the M sport trim still looks fab.
+slanahesh It looks great, and only costs 15k extra, lol. Welcome to the option madness that is German cars... Base price $35,000...as shown, $62,000, lol
They test low 3 series trim the 320i is naked and boring.. 228i and 335i is world of different with some factory options
As is the cost.
but worth it buy pre reg with plenty options and save 12k
The 320d is the one most people buy though.
I think that 5 series is the best !!
So they compliment the C class left and right and give it a low score yet there is a lot they don't like about the beemer but still give it a high score 🤔
I drove one of these great car but the manual box wasn't the best out there
Totally disagree, I've owned audiA5 and driven a c class, the bmw was the best gear Change
My dad has a 2010 BMW 520d Efficant Dynamics 181HP lol
How in the world did you find the money for the car and not for the fuel?
That screen on the dash...looks like an afterthought!!! It should re-tract down into the dash!
Nice Cahh
BMW top of the class yet again. What a surprise... this is not.
You love SPACE.. how abt a TRUCK!
Goddamn these people as so biased towards German cars.
What are they on about? 163 bhp isn't bad! Absolutely ridiculous
Ok the wheels on this particular model are waaay too small vs the size of the car.
When you look at it sideways the proportions are just off with these wheels.
This review gave me no useful info at all
4 cylinders in BMW is just wrong. Especially Diesel. BMW should be sold only with inline 6 cylinder petrol engines.
To be honest, I test drove a E90 325i straight 6 coupe the other day, the 3ltr one and it wasn't anything to get excited about. My 320D puts a smile on my face, the 325i felt like it should be my dads car.
n8neiTen8n Oh no, the Diesels are superb.
BMW M's were built on 4 cylinders, and BMW is the best at making diesels too
They call this a review?
fifth gears gotta test jaguar xe
+nagashree lingesh It's crap only for the rear space. Lovely looking car but, just no; Jaguar are taking the pi55 of over 10 years wait for their compact exec family customers, forcing them to go for the XF.
Why have BMW made a 320d that is an "Efficient Dynamics" Model, but then fitted it with an Automatic Gearbox, does that kind of defeat the purpose??
It'd be more efficient if it had a slightly longer Manual 6spd
The 335 is the best
well guess what my 340i has 60k miles and the door needs to be slammed shut
'...The sickth generation' ffs its SIXth. It's not difficult people.
What is your point old fellows
My OCD kicks in watching the LCD just half way through the dash..
30mph over take
try 50
These 5th gear group tests are just stupid to me...no word about its comfort, its environmental noise level, seats...etc. things that matter when you live with a car day by day. Same as in the C Class test.
The new c class is way better
good
Another fucking diesel!
I own one and its very very fast unlike what the idiots are talking about
If you can't reverse this car you can't drive it's easy. Window down head out the window then reverse
Its a joke.
***** Audi's build quality was near the bottom in the early 2000s, that's been changed. Do research within the last 5 years and you'll that
Infinite Universe not really, in this year's warranty direct survey in the UK they placed 34th out of 37 manufacturers.
Such a shame 😔
hey johnny what are those random spots of hair on your face ?
It looks rubbish but it drivers really well. BWM knows how to make good handling car but styling is horrible.
BMW needs to change that dash - looks so outdated.
What a stupid test, overtaking at 30 mph? Are you fucking kidding me? My 1.5L fiesta with 100 hp can do the same at that sort of speed. Try overtaking at 70 mph....
Jonnie seems to have an issue with the style of the car. Maybe he ought to check his facial hair before commenting on style. :) :) :)
Rather lame review, IMO.
English people reviewing cars - what a ripoff of topgear
Well top gear is english!
Top gear... British people reviewing cars 😉😂
But we still have one of the highest Ferrari per Capita :D
Try driving in Hong Kong and you would see how bad tiny streets + millions of residents sharing the road is.
cococly pricy... I guess Europeans just don't like big bulky trucks with big bulky V8's.
Thierry Van Tillo Let's just agree that we love cars ^^
Proper
Jonny is 100% right. It has such an ugly front end. It is ofull.
display terrible easy look ah emergency cross enormous edition.
Tractor
