Lifting Line part 2: general lift distributions, winglets, bound vortices

Show that an elliptic lift distribution is the minimum induced drag solution for a planar wing of fixed span. Using the method of restricted variations show an optimally loaded winglet. Discuss how bound vortices cancel, and thus the lifting line theory works to predict induced drag (even though the predicted downwash is incorrect for more general shapes).
