I’m a volunteer firefighter in South Georgia and we recently had a local dealership donate us a type 5 Skeeter brush truck on the Ram 4500 platform they are great trucks. We have used them on a few grass fires and we love it.
Go for the MRAP. You can only drive the Viper on good roads on nice days. The MRAP? Anytime, anywhere, any weather. Blessings
Let me shed some light on the MRAP MAXXPRO “weakness’s” you speak of. As the war in Iraq went on beyond 2003 the enemy improved their IEDs and started deep burying multiple artillery rounds so that the blast would be effective on tanks and Strykers. The US then developed the v shaped hull so the the occupants had a chance of survival. It is NOT designed to save the vehicle. Note that the blasts from deep buried IEDs would ERASE a shopping mall. There is no design known to man that would permit the vehicle to be mission capable after a blast like that. It’s all about keeping the Soldiers inside alive. Although there is much more to this...I hope this helps clear things up.
We build the 7.2 engine in the mrap in seguin texas. Old school heui injection but military loves them.

Neat rigs. I have a cousin that is a sales rep for Pierce Mfg also sells the Skeeter rig as well. Got to play with one once when he had it for a demo for a while. Waiting for the skeeter 6x6 to make a trip up north here.

A few counties over has 2 MRAP's to use when it floods to go and get the people out. It floods a lot too 5+ times a year.

We recieved a new 2017 pierce fire truck last year at our dept. Of course it has a DEF tank for the Cummins diesel. The only difference with how it runs is if the DEF fluid runs out, the motor does not lose any hp or torque like a standard diesel is programed to do. We lost over a month to DEF tank issues once we recieved the truck though. Huge pain in the butt!

Paul's Adventures he’s done videos on good and bad on every single truck. Of course he’s going to seem bias, it’s a product he uses day to day that has proven to be reliable. It’s like buying tools. If you buy a good tool set, why wouldn’t you want to tell everyone about it? I guarantee if he had bought a Ram it would be the same concept.

I hope you’re joking because a local county Sheriff shouldn’t be doing a job that should be done by the federal or state govt’s.
Local Law Enforcement is the tip of the spear down here my friend. Generally, it's combined task forces like DPS, Border Patrol (Border Patrol), CBP (Customs and Border Protection), ICE, SDs, PDs, and even some more advanced SO Army style units.
Also deploying the Army can be super expensive. Local law enforcement is a great idea, they know the most about the opposition and are already there.

I think that RAM should offer the 4500 HD in a consumer package to compete with the Ford F450 SD. Go with 19.5" wheels, the bigger axle's and brakes, commercial tires and the 4.30 differential etc.

I need to step in and help you with the Ford Van line. A Transit Connect is the little van that comes in 2 sizes. A Connect is based off either a Fiesta or Focus. (I can't remember which) A Transit Van Transit Wagon is the ones that are converted into ambulances and transport units. They come in 3 roof heights so that you can stand up in them. Available in T150, T250, & T350. I'm just trying to help.

As a subscriber to your channel living in the UK, I was stunned to see a military vehicle used by one of your Police Forces. Unless they are going to patrol in Afghanistan, what use will they get out of it? Over here our Emergency Response Vehicles are Fire Trucks. I guess you live and learn.
we do have fire trucks, ambulances and regular police cars. these military trucks are rarely if ever used. they get them cause the federal government has to do something with these vehicles and they already had them built for the wars. basically better than just sitting in a storage lot somewhere.

Note that he is at a Hurricane Conference - inferring these vehicles are used for that type of emergency response, to be able to get where they need to be and normal cars can't get there.
It's used for whatever they want. And in the state of an attack on US soil the local police forces can at least have a vehicle capable of holding off bad guys until national guard can get there or other more equipped agencies. No reason to leave lives at chance.
Davie. H mostly they buy them, outfit them with sonar weapons and use them to attack people who gather to protest things like economic disparity and racism

I'm a wheeled vehicle mechanic in the army, currently stationed in Kuwait, I work on the MRAP, MATV and many other up armored trucks.
In the combat environment it's no longer direct fire all the time and for the most part when it is they aren't looking for the filters and stuff like that. The whole basis of the MRAP was to simply survive an IED attack.
You can find videos on RUclips of the MRAP taking a direct IED attack from underneath, rolling over a couple times and the troops will get out unharmed except for some bruising and of course confusion on what just happened. Now do those trucks run after words, the is a big no.
But that's how all of them are designed. Not on the basis of taking the hit and keep moving but on taking the hit and leet the soilders in one piece no matter the damage.
I hate these trucks some are over complicated, and or not all the way thought out, from what I think. But damn do they get the job done.

I wonder if there has ever been a recorded incident of a Engine deration during an emergency trip. You would think they would have to perfect a mandatory requirement before enforcing it. I have lost a lot of money in down time to def break downs.

The department in my area has a crew cab 2012 ram 5500 long bed 4x4 as an ambulance. They wont let go as its preDEF and its the main unit of the entire town. They also have either 2 or 3 90s model f350s . Its funny looking at them as we all question since they sit around. Never would have thought about the emissions aspects making departments and hospitals stay with the older equipment. About the only thing thats been upgraded is the fire sheriff and police. But thats only 1 new engine as the other was toast and a new cheifs truck as th 98 crown vic wasnt cutting the brush fires too well.
Snipe Stud00: Yeah, I know companies and depts love to hold onto their older pre-dpf stuff. Many of these larger departments don't have a choice but to upgrade just due to the sheer number of vehicles in their fleet

Where can I buy a mobile command center.
The blue interior lighting inside the patient compartment of the EMS vehicle seems counter-intuitive as blue lighting could make it more difficult for the EMT to find a patient's vein in their arm. Bars used to install blue lighting in the restrooms to keep junkies from shooting up.
Military has been using blue for decades in the back of combat ambulances. The blue lighting is not the main lighting. It’s just accent lighting. Blue is easier on the eyes at night than a bunch of bright white. Red would be better but with red it’s harder find where bleeding is coming from. You only need to put an IV in maybe once or twice on a patient, but the rest of the time in the back of the box maybe used trying to find the injuries and trauma and control bleeding.
The main lights can be turned off and allow an easier more calming tone for the patient instead of them having to stare up into bright lights for a 5 minute or hour and a half long trip, or longer to a hospital.

I need to reach out to you. Im confused about towing capacity of my truck. I have a 2014 gmc Duramax. 2500. Owners manual says 15800. Google says 13000. Does pulling a gooseneck give it more capacity? I have the same rv you have, and someone told me I have too much for that truck
You might be ok, I don't know all the specs of your truck. Cab configuration and wheel base and 2 or 4wd?

James Pollock I have a 2015 2500 HD Duramax crew cab 4x4 it is rated to tow 13000lbs at the trailer hitch and 17100lbs gooseneck or fifth wheel my trailer is a 2014 palomino saber 42ft fifth wheel it weighs 14500lbs fully loaded and the truck pulls it fine no sway plenty of power . If u search the web u should be able to find a spec sheet from gm I downloaded one into my phone a few years ago but I don't remember where I found it .good luck and happy 🏕️.

The main difference is GVWR. You will run out of payload before you run out of GCWR. Overload either and you're overloaded. Most single wheel trucks pulling large 5ers are way overloaded.

I never really understood why any local agencies signed up for those free MRAP's from the military draw downs in Afghanistan and Iraq. They're like dogs, they're only free when someone wants to give them away, after you get them home you have to feed and care for them. Do you know what parts cost for something like that?
A guy I knew many years back ran a custom shop doing high dollar truck and buggy stuff, he told me once that a brake job on a "real" Humvee was $5,000 because of the parts... I can't even imagine what routine maintenance costs on something like that. For SWAT and other needs why aren't these departments buying standard armored cars that Loomis, Guardia and others use? There's commercially available parts, there's mechanics aplenty who know how to work on them and they're gonna stop anything the local sheriffs office needs to stop... if bad guys in Austin ever have RPG's to shoot up the cops with, them rolling with one MRAP onto the scene isn't going to change anything.

I couldn't help but notice on the MRAP that the oil filter and even the engine is exposed to the outside. Wouldn't this be a bad thing in the event of an IED? Or is this a more civilian version? I would think they would want those components shielded so the engine will still run after a blast so they can get away from the area.
edm I think the vehicle in general is built for military use but in its current configuration, county law enforcement, I really can’t see the use for IED protection.
They could have exposed them a little to get some weight off, or maybe to make maintenance easier
The MRAP Caiman that you saw, this is the standard configuration. As for IED's, it really doesn't matter what you shield the engine with, it's getting knocked out. The vehicle is designed to protect the occupants.
If you notice, the radiator has a set of bullet traps in-front of it. Think of the traps as a set of Venetian blinds, only bullet resistant.

Surplus or not, the question is why do they have it. Just incase, maybe, possibly, a remote chance they could inter an area with IEDs. I know you work with these guys, but, when I see things like this...makes me wonder what is the mind set of our law enforcement personal.
Their mindset is to do whatever they can to keep their men/women safe in any type of an situation. Or to have the equipment should the need arise. As a SWAT team member, would you rather ride into a hostile situation against heavily armed men in this or a standard armored vehicle? Cartels are known to use explosives and you don't want to say "I should have" when one goes off. I'd take the MRAP.
Why an MRAP when you can have an M1 abrams which is even safer? If for some reason the local law enforcement needs this kind of equipment it means the federal government has failed to do its job.
I would rather call the national guard than send our police into situations where they will use equipment like this... i really don't like the militarization of our police departments.

I think the Feds basically give local and state government the MRAPS when they decommission them after bringing them back from the Middle East. People freak out about the local LE having military vehicles but I'd rather see my tax dollars spent on something being used instead of sitting in a warehouse somewhere.
What is the maintenance cost on these things? Nothing is free. 5gal per mile?

We live in a dangerous world. The Boston Bombing, 9/11, That shooting in Texas where the Ex-Military guy was picking off cops, All the other mass shootings. Why would they not need one of these? They're not called First Responders for no reason, these guys are the first to any scene until SWAT, National Guard, FBI, CIA, Military or anyone else can get there and they need vehicles and equipment to hold off the threats until backup arrives. I guess you rather just sit on the news and watch cops get taken out by an Ex-Military sniper for hours until proper equipment can get there to end the threat? Is that what you want?
I work for a private ambulance company in NM and we keep our units for 6 years, or 300K miles, whichever comes first. We're transitioning from F350s diesel uints to E350 gasoline units: cost less to maintain. Ironic that people tasked to help those with breathing problems ( in some cases) are trying to get exemption legislation from emissions standards. That'll all settle down with the transition to fully electric. It just makes the most sense from both an operations cost and public health perspective. Would love to see a review on the Tesla semi when it is commonly available.
Aaron Bounds I'm not a huge fan of electric vehicles (given current tech) but an ambulance (and perhaps fire trucks) actually seem like a pretty good fit.
I’ve ridden along on several trips in Iraq (MRAP). Not my preferred method, since I like to fly. My username may indicate my preference. Seems like a huge overkill for a sheriff in the US. I understand why they have them because they were surplus since we vacated Iraq in 2010/11. There’s still plenty in Kuwait, if the need arises :)

I do not like how militarized the police have become. That "MRAP" is a military vehicle. I feel like police departments using these is the sign of a police state. Can you imagine the up front cost of one of these, not to mention the maintenance required?

All I see is a big waste of tax dollars. Lastly, the law enforcement shouldn't be militarized, the sheriff's department has no reason to have a MRAP.
Sadly, they do. There are too many people who have no problem acting like violent idiots.
It's actually less expensive for the taxpayer, because the department of defense offers the police to buy their old equipment (APCs, MRAPs, rifles...) at huge discount or even for free, so the military transfers equipment to the police, no taxpayer money needed. (Look it up, program 1033)

Some of this is natonal guard equipment. Sheriff's departments should absolutely not be militarized like this...it means we have private standing professional paramilitary forces under local direct control. The founding fathers would be appalled. At least the national guard is made up of people who typically work normal jobs like everyone else and IMHO might tend to be more thoughtful about posibly abusing this stuff.
