Glad you had a good experience. I'm also Canadian and moved to Mobay to be with my hubby, and had quite a challenging experience. Hope you don't mind if I share as well.
We didn't have much money - hubby worked long days for pitiful wages, I had to wait to get my papers so that I could work, and when I did try to find something - I was also offered pitiful wages (more than him though - yay?). Thankfully, I was able to find work online - but had to negotiate (bc I'm Canadian and have a degree) to $5 an hour (I still work remotely in Canada, but for MUCH better wages).
A lot of unnecessarily strict rules in certain places (must wear a skirt/dress below the knees, sometimes with panty hose, full blouse that covers shoulders or you can't get in - frustrating when it's already so damn hot), men trying to grab me/touch me without consent, things are quite expensive sometimes (I really don't know how a Jamaican making a regular wage affords certain things, like a car - a car worth $2000 CAD would be at least 1 Mil JMD, which is ridiculous), jps or water commission trying to scam you for more money than necessary, water gone frequently (so ensure you have a tank), light gone semi frequently, poor customer service, afraid to go out too much at night bc of crime, bugs everywhere all the time no matter how much you clean, police harassment of citizens (never fun to watch. Just bc they think you look like you're bad, they'll harass you), harassment at the airport, harassment when you leave, antiquated services (if your signature doesn't match exactly as before, God help you), constantly afraid of being scammed bc it's clear by my accent I'm not from Jamaica, and anything you need to do somehow takes 10x longer than you need it to, driving in Jamaica can be very scary compared to Canada (smaller roads, a lot of potholes). Also, if you're not familiar with patois, that can be challenging as well. And one more thing - my family did try to start a beauty type business in Jamaica - had to abandon it, the landlords for the place we were renting tried to scam us. 🙄.
That said, my skin glowed and my hair grew. Rent was CHEAP (less than $300 CAD for an unfurnished 2 bedroom apartment - so my $5/hr went a long way). I grew closer to hubby's family (I truly love them). As much as I was frustrated, hubby and I had a roof over our heads and were able to live without roommates, our bellies were always full, if we needed to save money on food he could go spear fishing to catch us some fish, we had fruits around us, and I met a lot of awesome people. Most Jamaicans are very kind. Also, interestingly, I think I may have had better internet in Jamaica. Lol
Now that I'm making more money, I maybe wouldn't mind going back. But after my experience, I don't have much desire to go back. I was very frustrated with a lot of things. Hubby also has no desire to live in Jamaica again. At least, not now.
I was quite happy when I was able to bring him back here with me.
So, to anyone thinking of moving to Jamaica, just keep in mind that things can be quite different than you're used to, and there are times you'll be very frustrated. Yes - you FOR SURE will get frustrated about something. But if you have money saved up, you can live luxuriously (at least if house prices don't keep going up 🙄 - and don't look online for house prices. It's best to have a Jamaican friend/relative look in the newspaper for you and take pics of house prices. The ones online are much more expensive). Also, Jamaica is full of resources - I wish the Jamaican government would stop depending on foreign money and invest in their own people. Things could be so much better if they did that.

@Aye Yo Cheryl is A REAL ONE I lived in Jamaica for about 2 years.
No, I'm not spoiled and it wasn't about being spoiled. I just wanted to share my experience and how it was frustrating - not everything is awesome in Jamaica, and not everyone is going to have an awesome experience, especially if they're not making a lot of money (and they shouldn't expect to be able to go to Jamaica and make a lot of money either - getting a job in Jamaica is very difficult. And accepting such a low rate of pay compared to what they were making in their own country can feel demeaning. The rate of pay is usually much lower than the minimum wage in the country they're moving from - at least in my experience).
Essentially, the point of my comment was to highlight that someone who has lived in a western country (such as Canada, US, or the UK) shouldn't go to Jamaica and expect those same standards. Since things work different in these countries, it may be frustrating to move to Jamaica. I didn't want anyone to just up and move to Jamaica and feel unprepared. Additionally, if you had read my further comments, I did ask Annesha about also creating a video to address the challenges one might face when they move to JA and how to navigate around them (since she agreed with my original comment about the challenges, so it seems she experienced some of those too).
Also, not feeling hostility from other races - unsure where in JA you lived (or live), but a person can certainly experience hostility from other races in Jamaica, as well as from the Jamaican people, just as you can experience hostility from people anywhere else.
That said, it seems that you may have missed the point of my original comment - it wasn't to tear Annesha down or to tear down Jamaica. But just to show that it's not all sunshine and rainbows over in JA (although it can be - with money, meaning if they can make the minimum wage amount from their country and live in JA, they'll live well), and was hoping my original comment could help someone prepare for the frustrations as well.

Makes NO sense to me at all. Being Jamaican runs much deeper than just being born on the island. It's a culture and lifestyle that follows & moulds you. Nationality and culture are two VERY different things. Try telling the 2nd generation Jamaican they're not Jamaican when they're reminded everyday ina farrin that they don't belong there. I love the food, weather, dancehall & dancehall parties...of course the people especially pickney...I often find myself looking through pics/videos from my various trips when I’m at home in Canada and I miss Jamaica so dearly that I actually start to cry. As a non-Jamaican I’ve tried to figure out way to be able to live there more than 3 months....but to get a job there requires a work permit which you can pay for & risk getting denied 😒 Marriage could be another option but it’s hard to find a Jamaican man you can trust and who doesn’t want to fly out to foreign 🔍👀

I was born in Ja, raised in UK (Dr Barnardos ) and now live in the USA, Florida. My family still lives in JA. Every time I go home to JA there is nothing like putting my foot down on the earth where I was born, something I never feel living in the USA or UK. When I leave, to return home, I always swear I am never going to return to this 3rd world country because Jamaicans never understand, when we purchase, its not the price but the value.

    You are so beautiful!
Both in and out I can just feel your joy. The feeling that I belong in 🇯🇲 has been on my heart for the past few years, and I think so much about it. I’m currently finishing my last semester of college before I go down in December to stay for a few months, and I’ve literally been praying that God help me to use this time to connect more with my purpose and speak to me on whether it’s for me to permanently reside in JM at some point!
Like you my parents are from JM, I spent some years living there as a child with my father, and also went to primary school during that time. Now I just visit when I can, as my bf and family are there. 💛
Literally everything you’ve said about the happiness Jamaica brings you, the strong connection you feel to our people, our culture, just the entire energy, I felt it all. Even when some may feel like they live in Jamaica and want to go outside to find a better life I try to tell them: You believe that now, but there will come a time when you realize that here, even if you have nothing, you have everything✨Peace.
I was here on youtube watching vlogs, and your video popped up as a suggestion. Idk if it’s God answering what I’ve been praying on, but hearing what you have to share is def a BLESSING.☀️ It’s true that you’re able to realize what happiness feels like being away from Canada or America (where I reside), or anywhere else that has colonized these beautiful countries. You realize that life is way too short to be living “just to get along,” versus living WITHIN YOUR HAPPINESS AND PURPOSE; life feels so much more purposeful.
I AM DEFINITELY A NEW SUBSCRIBER AND DEF GOING TO WATCH YOUR NEXT VIDEO ON THE MOVING PROCESS! Who knows, maybe we’ll even link some day!☺️ BLESSINGS☀️☀️☀️☀️🤗🤗
    P.s.
don’t be surprised if I have nuff nuff questions on everything u talk about😭 (I’ll try not to kill you still)💀😩😂💃🏾
Update: did u actually have a vid on your registration/moving process to JM? I was looking... but🤷🏾‍♀️ *****FOUND IT FINALLY, lol. It might help others if you link it in the description here☺️🙏🏾

Thank you for sharing this and portraying positivity in reference to JA. I always have to justify why I too want to live there. People like to put their negativity and bad past experiences on you and some, born and raised in JA, have horrible things to say about their own country and everything bad about it. I encourage any person reading this comment, old or young, to live your own life, do as God leads, and stop looking at or listening to negativity. Even the media presents a lot of negativity and there seems to be little balance of good and bad news. It’s one thing to get advice but it’s YOUR life. Create opportunities for YOURSELF and stop basing your choice to do anything on what mama, sister, cousin and Granny say. Nuff love to you Annesha!

I'm Jamaican by descent too.Born in the UK raised with Jamaican principles and expectations. I have considered applying for dual nationality but the windrush scandal in the uk put me off. I my still apply. Something I need to look into more. I have family who have moved back home or bought homes so they can visit when they want and live in two countries. I really appreciate the videos you make of Jamaica (alongside other JA vloggers) as it shows the side of JA the tourist dont see. I am a lot older than you but I am inspired that you so keep going onwards and upwards.
