I've watched the international versions of the first three Kung Fu Panda movies and that was quite a unique experience. There were censored jokes, Oogway, who kinda threatened Po, and blunders that ruined some crucial scenes in the trilogy. Let's dive right into it.

I'm russian, and I can say that: "flavored tofu" is just name of actual chinese dish in russian; russian word "неистовый" means both "frantic" AND "furious", and while there is other words with close meaning, "неистовый" sound more fitting in russian. And yea, sometimes our translators love add more replicks to where they are not in the original, nobody knows for sure why.

Nice video! Just two things for the German translations. First in 4:10 he says „dann mach dich bereit für den Donner“ what kann be translated with „then ready yourself for the thunder“ so sadly no Döner Kebab 😂
And secondly in 5:30 where the Wolf say „lass es dir schmecken, schwabbel“ the word „schwabbel“ could be translated with chubby or chunky so tubby would work, but it is a reference aimed at his weight or fat in particular. So I didn’t see what you meant, that this was a reference to Crane.
I could imagine that the subtitles maybe misunderstood the word as „schnabel“ which means beak. Then I get the reference you meant.
Otherwise I like your Videos! 👍

also some random facts about Polish version:
-for some reason we don't have the Wu Xi finger hold, we have "finger of doom technique''
-Oogway and Kai don't use the term ''500 years'', they use ''half a millenium'' when reffering to how long Kai was stuck in the Spirit Realm. This actually sound more "epic and ancient'' to me :)
    -also some of ''Oogway's wisdoms'' were changed a bit and sometimes for better I guess;
"One often meets his destiny on his way to avoid it'' was changed to ''sometimes a path we don't want to follow leads to our destiny''
"yesterday is history [...]'' was changed to ''yesterday is already history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today's a gift of fate, and the gifts' purpose is to enjoy them''
''there are no accidents'' - ''nothing happens by accident''
    - also our Tai Lung's VA is the same man who voices Obelix in beloved (due to extraordinary amazing voice acting) among us movie Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatre so Tai Lung's ''what you gonna do fat guy, sit on me?'' hits different when you remember Obelix gets annoyed when someone calls him fat "I see no fat guys here" xD

Translating the wordplay from Oogway with "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift, that is way it's called the present" must have been really difficult.
In the Hebrew version they basically gave up and said what translates to "Yesterday was what was, tomorrow is a surprise, but the present is a gift. that's why in English they call it pleasant [sic]". So they just referenced the English, but I guess nobody in the recording room knew English that well.
    Here's the exact Hebrew
"אתמול היה מה שהיה, מחר זה הפתעה, אבל ההווה הוא מתנה. לכן קוראים לו באנגלית 'pleasant'"

The german explanations were both wrong.
    1. Po didn't say he'll make the doll into a Döner Kebab, he said "Mach dich bereit für den Donner" which means "Be prepaired for the Thunder"
    2. The Wolf didn't disslike Crane, he was saying "Schwabbel" which is referring to Po. "Schwabbel" means fat and is just a different word (somtimes used for bullying, like in this case).

  • @GMSryBut

No. He doesn't say that AT ALL.
Po says: "Dann mach dich bereit für den Donner (NOT Döner)
Which translates to: "Then get ready for the thunder."
    (Donner means thunder.)
    5:28
    Also Wrong.
The Wolf says: "Lass es dir schmecken, Schwabbel."
The "Taste that" was rightly transtalted, but "Schwabbel" is more of an insult towards fat people, when their body fat wabbles too much.
This has NOTHING to do with Crane.

The formal German theory is probably incorrect, since using formal language with people you know is deemed as rude and cold it was probably his intent to disrespect Shifu by purposely using formal language instead of normal talk, kinda like saying: No mother, I will not do... Instead of normal talk: no mom, I can't do...

1:45 I think you miss some cultural points here about the tofu, he didn't "call" the tofu stinky, "stinky tofu" is the name of a chinese dish, it is the way the tofu is prepared that gives it this name, like a French cheese, it stinks yes, but it is the name of the dish (臭豆腐 chou doufu literally means "smelly tofu"/"stinky tofu") , so here "stinky" is not a qualifier, but the name of the dish, Po doesn't like this dish, he doesn't like "stinky tofu" not just "tofu".

The Hungarian version is the best.! No joke. Our translations are better than the original. Not always but one of the most notable translations are the Rick and Morty, South park etc.In the Kung Fu Panda 2 Po say Shabada rather than skadoos, and I really like that. MAybe I'm a little biased, but it's a fact that we have more cuss words, and we can talk more sophisticated. And also we have the worst translations as well. PLS if you read this types this into RUclips:Star Wars - Csillagok Háborúja: A Jedi visszatér - Narrátoros, hangalámondás and this short:
Star Wars | Eredeti VS Magyar VS 1983-as hangalámondás
    We had movies like this.

    • @SeanMirrsen
      @SeanMirrsen 2 месяца назад +1

In Russian the line went as "The Past is forgotten, the Future is hidden, only the Present is given to us - that's why it's called so."
There is no double meaning of Gift/Present in Russian, instead the meaning is more philosophical - "the present" also means "real" or "true", i.e. the phrase is that only real, true, meaningful things are given, and matters of past and future are of little value.

Polish version has "that's why it's called a present" replaced with "And gifts are are to be enjoyed". There is no wordplay that would work here in Polish, as far as I can think of.

German: Po doesn't even say a word about "turn into...", he says "get ready for.."
And not get ready for the "doner" but "Donner" = "thunder".
And ya "Schwabbel" not "Schnabel", but "schwabbel" is probably not the first word you would learn at school so i get why it came to this mistake 🙈

6:27 Для меня конечно же лучшим дубляжом,будет естественно русский,ибо я сам родом из России.Великолепный голос Михаила Галустяна за По,ничуть не хуже тем Джек Блэк в оригинале или же Александр Хотченков за Мастера Шифу,тем то для меня будет лучше чем Дастин Хоффман,и т.д!
6:27 For me, of course, the best dubbing will be Russian, of course, because I myself come from Russia. The magnificent voice of Mikhail Galustyan for Po, is no worse than Jack Black in the original or Alexander Hotchenkov for Master Shifu, so it will be better for me than Dustin Hoffman, etc!

It's not the first time I've heard the claim that there are no accents in Russian dubbing. It's just that in Russian speech, any accent will stand out too much, at least it will sound funny, but as much as possible it will be offensive.

Yes, sometimes when it comes to film dubbing, sometimes, rarely, there are translate mistakes, in the form of misunderstood words, it happens, this is not excluded.
Now I was wondering what phrases or words in Russian, in the cartoon, were it impossible to translate the meaning into English?
I know that there are examples in the form of slang words or all sorts of proverbs, that can't be translated, but I don’t remember that such were there.

The only one I can think of is at the very end where Po says "I am THE big fat panda". In Russian there's no articles like "a" and "the" to differentiate the importance.
Still, the dub did an extraordinary job, I prefer it much more to the original.
