    #sponsorship #staysober #wedorecovery
First off, you must find a sponsor if you want to stay clean and sober. Don’t wait for the perfect sponsor - just pick one!
I went to my first meeting on March 8th, 2011. There was so much laughter and joy; I couldn’t believe that I was around a bunch of people that were clean and sober. I was at my bottom and was ready to do something different. I was told to get a sponsor at that meeting and I was ready to do what I was told.
I got a sponsor at my second meeting, a guy that was doing the deal. I was lucky that it didn’t take too long. You’re looking to do it quickly, and you’re looking for someone that you can relate to. But again, more than that, you want someone available to work the steps with you.
Your sponsor should be available to you on a weekly basis to meet in person. They’ll give you suggestions to go to a meeting every day, and for you to call them every day. Follow those suggestions.
You’ll find a sponsor at a meeting, and that will hopefully encourage you to keep going to meetings - ideally also meeting up with your sponsor at the meetings he attends.
Your sponsor is essentially going to walk you through the steps. That’s their primary job. This will make it an intimate relationship - you’ll end up connecting on a deep level. You must remain willing to take instructions, as this will help you grow.
Your sponsor will advise you to get a service commitment, write a gratitude list, call three people each day, pray, and many other actions that are then up to you to take. What’s important is that you do actually take the required action.
Because addicts and alcoholics are super smart they often overthink things. The problem with being smart is that you don’t want to take suggestions. But remember that it’s your best thinking that got you where you are today. So find a sponsor and follow his instructions. You need to be prepared to go to any lengths to stay clean and sober.
You might not want to call your sponsor for fear that they’re too busy, or that you’ll sound like you are complaining. Don’t worry about that - remember that you are helping them too. This is a form of service. You’re helping your sponsor by providing them with more accountability. So you also need to be assertive - which also helps you grow.
If you are thinking of ‘firing’ your sponsor because of a personality clash, or for some reason it’s just not working - that’s okay too. Find a way to have that hard conversation, that’s a big part of recovery. But don’t fire your sponsor until you have someone else lined up.
Once you get to Step 12 and are looking to give back, you then get to become a sponsor yourself.

I am 38 days sober. Been going to daily [sometimes 2 meetingsa day] meeting for 3 weeks. I have been to a few book readin meetings, like those. I have visited several "groups" . But go to a "home" group most times. I LOVE the home group, nice tribe! I am ready to attempt a sponsor, i am ready to actually join a "group"

BTW: this was ridiculously helpful. I’m not assertive and I’m a former 100%people pleaser - loathe confrontation. But I’m like 2 months in and hurting. It’s getting worse w/ my SP, not better. I think I need to be astute enough to advocate for what I need without insulting my SP’s abilities or personal boundaries.

A sponsor can be a helpful conduit towards living the program and a higher power, but it is the whole spiritual awakening and way of living that is the key element rather than a sponsor him/herself. Having a sponsor can be a great thing as long as not a barrier to the program/higher power/spiritual awakening

The book Alcoholics Anonymous.... Foreword 1st edition: " To show other alcoholics precisely how we have recovered is
the main purpose of this book. For them, we hope these pages will prove
so convincing that no further authentication will be necessary. " and from We Agnostics chapter in aa book: "Our human resources, as
marshalled by the will, were not sufficient; they failed
    utterly.
Lack of power, that was our dilemma. We had to
find a power by which we could live, and it had to be
a Power greater than ourselves. Obviously. But where
and how were we to find this Power?
Well, that’s exactly what this book is about. Its
main object is to enable you to find a Power greater
than yourself which will solve your problem"

Is it ok to switch sponsors? My sponsor after about two months definitely does not have time to talk- at all. In fact, she clearly told me this. She is a totally wonderful lady!! No criticism against her. I need to share, however- occasionally!! Not even every week. She just shuts me down. I need help
Note: I’ve followed every single instruction she’s giving me. And it’s ok that she never answers the phone, nor does she call me back. That’s OK! I’m doing it all…
But she is NEVER available to talk. Like- I gotta get to know or be known. There’s no empathy.. I don’t need a lot, but I gotta have SOMETHING. SOS 🆘

If you're struggling with your Sponsor and you fire your sponsor, your sponsor will probably be relieved because you might not be a great sponsee.

If you allow a sponsor to dictate how to live you are doomed. They just guide you. God keeps you sober not a sponsor

Sorry but your believe you have to have a sponsor to successfully sustain sobriety is wrong on so many levels. If anyone feels the need for a sponsor there are many AAers who are more than qualified to guide you to retain your sobriety. But there are many more who couldn't run a self service gas station and should be sued for malpractice. Some sponsors believe that they are your moral compass, spiritual advisor, financial advisor a marriage counselor, and be as manipulate as they want. Stopped drinking eight years ago after drinking for fifty years and with the last thirty-five of those years drinking excessively every day. I've never used a sponsor or the need to use one.
