Gibson should never of stopped producing this bass or the Ripper, and Grabber, if they hadn't I doubt they would be in such a troublesome situation now, they are the only Gibson basses in my opinion that can compete with what fender have to offer nowadays.
Jack Hughes Their financial situation has nothing to do with the instrument side of their business
I 100% agree with you... Have not a single clue, why the heck did they stop making / re-making them. I'd love to own a Ripper now, but not for 3000$ cad they are being re-sold for now.
I have a gibson ripper and the thing is magical. Such a treat to play.
If they made a PROPER reissue as this one or the Ripper og Grabber, and not being over 1500 dollars, I would be all over them.
@@D3ft0ne It would be cool to have one, but even the second cheapest Squire basses from Indonesia sound very good for a tenth the price new.
I definitely prefer this bass with a pick than fingers
yeah, same here. Miss mine. I can't believe I traded it away!
Love the aesthetics of this era of Gibson basses
It's interesting, the sound is definitely single coil, not a humbucker, but doesn't really sound like a jazz bass. It can sound a bit flat at times, especially when played near the bridge, but when it's played further up it gains more personality. The slap sound is unique. I'd love to try a bass similar to it today. Get on it Epiphone!
@@matth7952 The Epiphone one was more like the grabber though
A friend of mine has one of these and let me borrow it for a practice, they are really great, amazing top end bite and snarl.
Great demo! I've always liked the fact that Gibson basses are wildly different (for the most part) than most others on the market.
I'm a fan of anything from Bill Lawrence! His Wilde pickups are my favorite bass pickups ever!
I've loved this bass since I started playing in high school just after they'd come out. They were THE bass to have then, for any young rockers. It seems to have its one sort of tone and that's what it does so well, but how much variation can you get out of it?
I absolutely love the Ripper, Grabber, RD, and this G3 bass. I'm absolutely shocked by their discontinuation and limited-run reissues/remakes. Did they get poor sales? What made Gibson give them up? If I could afford all four, I'd buy them!
Poor initial sales have always been a trend for Gibson. The Les Paul debuted in 1952 and didn’t really achieve its legendary status until ‘68 or so. The V and Explorer debuted in ‘58 and didn’t catch on until the ‘70s. These ‘70s basses didn’t really catch on until somewhat recently. I mean, you had some players like Gene Simmons using them in the ‘70s but they didn’t obtain their current status until players like Mike Dirnt, Krist Novoselic, and Eddie Breckenridge started playing them. I guess it’s just more difficult for guitar companies to take a chance on a sleeper these days.
@@TheBassChannel Yeah, I noticed that most of the demos I've seen of them were made from about two years ago at the latest. Taking note of what you said, I think the limited-run RD Artist 2018 was probably Gibson testing the waters in response to this new trend. I won't raise my hopes too high, but _maybe_ Gibson will release a more permanent RD within the next few years if the Artist did well.
Funny how things get popular long after they are gone. My first bass was a maple Ripper, They weren’t particularly popular back then.
Cool demo! I never was able to get into those basses, though. I love the clear pickup covers.
First bass I owned was a black G3. Bought it brand new. I'd love to have that baby today!
I have a natural finish G3 and I am in search of a case or gig bag for it! I am considering getting a Mono case but I am not sure if itll fit! I was wondering what you use?
Dude this bass is soooooo nice, but I gotta ask… you have this bass, the bass used by one of punk's all time greats in Mike Dirnt, and you don't play any classic Green Day lines?
Seriously though I love this thing. There gonna be a giveaway on this thing?
No offense to Mike Dirnt, but when we see the Grabber/Ripper shape, our first thought is Gene Simmons. Either way, we try to avoid playing anyone’s riffs on the channel. Its always good to keep it original. Glad you dig the bass, though! I don’t see this one going anywhere anytime in the foreseeable future.
@@TheBassChannel When I see a Ripper, Rick Danko of The Band immediately comes to mind. Love your demo licks, and I dig that you only play original riffs.
@@michaelvincentgaddi3158 This might be because I'm a HUGE Green Day fan but the first thing I think of when I see the Gibson G3 is Mike Dirnt playing the bass solo to Chump or Welcome to Paradise
daaamn, that quite an unique sound right there
Nice reviews as usual. Saludos desde Argentina!
I wish Gibson still cared about making basses. I want a Ripper and this one. Unfortunately, they are $2000+.
Love that tone!
The tones on this vid do it no justice to be honest
Legendary bass sounds in this thing... I can feel how heavy it is just from looking at it though! haha
Quite light actually, VERY thin body.
I played a 76 Grabber a few years ago at a Sam Ash in Asbury Park, and yeah it was surprisingly light. I’m gonna guess around 8.5 to 9 lbs.
Do you guys sale bass gear? Is this bass for sale?? I’m talking about THE actual Gibson G3 bass you are playing in the video. Thanks! K
No, we don’t actually sell anything. We just show gear.
Where do I get these pickups?
i wish gibson made i lefty g3... i want one so bad
Until I saw the headstock, I thought this was a modified Ripper. Never seen one in the flesh. Wow, sounds like my Ripper if it had single coils.
I'm a fan of green day and their bassist Mike Dirnt used to use one of these and I'd love to have one, unfortunately I can't afford one though.
I wanna get one and wire it like a Gilmour strat
I believe, i buy this model Grabber so good sound, i have self a Ripper 74 bass very good to...
That is funky fresh!
Mine sounds much fatter live in the room. It’s cuts the mix better than all the rest of my gear, and is one of my Basses that my band always comment on
Why are these basses not being produced!?
Your guess is as good as mine.
Cowardice
Cowardice
@@riffwizardsupreme how so?
probally because gibson doesn't like bass players
Too this day. No one makes a bass that has the definition and harmonicsis that this bass has. You can play any style of music with it.
You could try not to replace your strings every 7 weeks and the bass will sound a lot more like the devil with to much testicles. I have a much fatter sound on this bass when i use dirty and old strings....How you recording? Active/passive DI? Sounds active! What pre amps you using? DAW? Hope to hear from you!
I guessed i should have the video first,.... Fuck man i love this bass........
This bass has the urge to be played very percussionaly. It also handles the ballads as well as the heavy punk and metal, but about funk im not so sure. i got big hands, so i could handle the funk on this beast but it slaps like a preacher's dick on a sundaysschool boy's forehead. So no funk for me on this surfboard.
That's the first bass I ever owned.
What an original G-3 bass guitar is worth today, I have just used one little
It’s usually now between $1500 and $2000 if it’s in good condition. Are you still selling bc I’m trying to get my hands on one haha
what strings are you using on this? sounds a hell of a lot better than mine
Zeb Mrowka maybe it's time to replace your strings?
agreed, i wanna know which ones they use though
is this vintage or a re-pro?
Vintage
1978 is not 2018
To be fair to the original comment, Gibson does still offer a 1959 Les Paul Reissue.
The rereleased version wasn’t very good in my opinion. Always go for the original.
@@trainerred2063 Yeah, the new one sucked BAD. They changed EVERY SINGLE THING on it.
Would prefer flatwounds on this bass
Gibson still has not figured out that this should be the setup on the new basses.
Rich in harmonics. Tight as a witches a_s.
PLAY LONGVIEW
I hate greenday post 1993 but the G3 is That tone 1000%
That neck alignment (or at least string spacing) is fucked, however, you seriously can't match or beat that tone. Seriously wish this bass caught on more so gibson still made em regularly and other people started copying it.
PSSST PLAY DOOKIE
Seriey Gaming I hate to be the “UmM AcTuALLy” guy. Buuuut just to inform you if you weren’t already aware, Dirnt used a Fender PJ for Dookie, he used the G3 for sure in Insomniac though.
IHaveAids 420 same
thing😂😂😂 still sounds the same either way
@@ihaveaids4205 that's actually true. But he did play this one live during the dookie live era and it sounds really dope in these songs
gen Simmons ues Gibson bass
He used a Ripper a LONG time ago (early 70's) and still uses that bass now and then for recordings. He just recently put his NAME on a Gibson Thunderbird (which he has never used).
doesn't sound grounded.
mike dirnt's dookie bass in 1994
Yeah that was his live rig but as for the album he used an active Precision-bass he borrowed
Great video but Gibson basses have got that farty tone😅😅😅
