Hi hi! A comment on the mention of free shipping: My intention is not to eat into the sellers bottom line, what I meant is that when I’m shopping on Etsy, I compare the total price (cost + shipping) when looking at similar products. Having free shipping is just a way to market your product, the same thing happens on eBay and many buyers search by free shipping. Sellers are just advertising their product in a different way to compete with other sellers or sell their own product. I definitely still buy stuff on Etsy that doesn’t have free shipping (I just bought a homemade vase that had a $25 shipping cost because it was heavy). I understand that some sellers need to charge for shipping and I’m still willing to support, I just meant if the option for free shipping is available, as a consumer I tend to lean toward it. Hope that helps clear that up!

I think my issue is that for someone new, perhaps with sub $10 per item products, factoring in shipping is difficult because you’re trying to build sales so you could just make a loss for a long time with the odd sale here and there.
In my case I only do auctions, so I can’t risk eating say £25 international post (about 50% of my sales are overseas) on an item that sold for £20. I do absorb some as I keep shipping largely at a flat rate but I think it’s just important for not necessarily you but other consumers to understand why shipping free just isn’t feasible for all business models, especially new businesses selling very low volume.

It’s important for consumers to know that just because it’s on Etsy, that doesn’t mean it’s a small business or handmade
I work in gemology. Synthetic means lab grown. All lab grown gemstone have the same chemical structure as that same gemstone mined from the earth. Synthetic diamonds are the same carbon composition as diamonds mined from the earth, but they are created in a lab. A simulant stone is a "substitute". so moissanite is a simulant for diamond since it looks similar. The earrings you purchased as simulant moissanite are most likely cubic zirconia ( which is often also used as a diamond simulant). Almost all moissanite on the market is synthetic, ie. Lab grown. Hopefully that info is helpful!

I guess what is slightly confusing still is are cubic zirconias different then from moissanite? And if they are the same then why are moissanites so much more expensive than CZ?

@@jennifermayberry6200 yes they're different stones! moisanite is similar to diamond in that it's composed of carbon (& similar hardness) and even more sparkle, cubic zirconia is more affordable being that it's of zirconium and oxygen and much less sparkle, although still very pretty and a great affordable option.

Hello!! So glad to see people supporting Etsy! I have an Etsy shop and the shipping is determined by the weight of the item that the seller uses when they post the listing and Etsy calculates the shipping cost based on that. I have a lot of orders that I have to give refunds for shipping overages that were charged to the customer.
Some sellers must exploit this because I have several very light items that I haven’t bought because shipping is like $15
Thanks for sharing! But it seems like some sellers are able to set their own rate, charge a flat rate, or offer free shipping. Is that available to all sellers on Etsy?
@@taylorwynn yes those options are available to the sellers. Just depends on the seller. Shipping is expensive. I often wonder if customers wouldn’t mind the item price being higher if they were offered free shipping to compensate for cost. I make handmade soap and bath items which are at a low price point but could always raise the item price and offer free shipping.
@@bjones14325 I’m sure you don’t want to “experiment” with your business, but if it’s helpful... I think seeing “free shipping” would automatically make me more interested in the listing. Even if the cost of the product is a little higher! It’s kind of a psychological trick

Hi Taylor! I wasn’t sure if the goal of the series was to highlight small independent businesses on Etsy, but the water bottle is a mass produced product manufactured by China. That seller sells products that aren’t handmade or crafted, but purchased from a factory which anyone can purchase in bulk from. Many shops have to compete with companies like those despite the platform being made for independent creators.
I wanted to mention that in case you were not aware.
I was going to comment this as well, as an etsy seller its really disheartening having to compete with "faux small businesses" who just mass buy mass produced stuff from aliexpress etc : (

Hmm good to know. I thought the products had to be handmade or vintage in order to be sold on Etsy. Did the rules change and if not how are these people/ companies getting away with selling items that are bought in bulk from a factory?.... Really shitty of them bc they are taking away from the hard work and creativity put in by a majority of the .
I was wondering about this lol. They have so many on Wish and Ali Express.
This is the downside to Etsy growing as a platform, lots of people don’t even disclose they’re selling non-handmade items anyone could order off Ali express. It takes away from the people spending time handcrafting!

I had a professor once who went offfff on the over priced diamond market . They’re so common, easy to make but because we equate it with love or luxury, they can pretty much charge anything lol
Shipping costs are NOT FREE so that seller is spending money shipping goods, if someone wants to support small businesses they should also be okay with paying shipping because shipping costs are actually quite pricey
Free shipping isn’t free. It’s factored into the cost of the product. One seller may sell the product for $10 plus free shipping while the other charges $7 plus $3 for shipping.

They make lots of those heat packs that have closures so if you get it dirty you can pour the filling into a bowl and wash the case so you don't have to worry about getting something on it and ruining it.
I've really been working on overcoming the barrier of shipping costs from small businesses. I don't think we understand if we don't ship stuff how much it actually costs. Large companies can eat the cost bc they do a high volume and we've become accustomed to free shipping (like with Amazon). If a small business wants to do that they have to increase the price of their items. I think if you really like the person's work and want to support them, paying for shipping is worth it to support them
Paying a price almost as high as the item itself is completely not worth it for me. Id prefer ‘free shipping’ with a slight increase in item price, rather than basically paying for 2 items. You also have to consider customers who live far away. Its a toss up between having people all over the world having your craft, or none because you price people out with shipping costs.
@@Queensocks shipping stuff halfway across the country from you is not cheap. Sellers shouldn’t have to pay that cost (sometimes $15-20 for items) because people who live further away think they’re entitled to free shipping

@@Aeropostale928 Yes, sellers shouldn't pay for that shipping cost, BUT a buyer shouldn't feel obligated to purchase anything if the shipping is too much, and a lot of buyers will pass when the shipping is closer to double the price of the item, making that store lose customers. Making the product slightly more expensive and lowering the shipping cost brings more customers, that's how all of those big stores can get away with low cost/free shipping, it's included in the price and often applies when you've bought products of a specific value.
Some of the shipping on Etsy is insane though, I saw a set of birthday cards for $7, with a shipping of over $50 to Sweden. They could literally be sent in an envelope with stamps. Shipping on Etsy is always a flat fee as well, but stores sell a lot of different objects and it's never individually calculated but we always have to pay that flat fee even if the shipping should/could be lower. Sometimes it feels like wish "shipping" where the shipping is a part of how they earn their money.

Great idea! I'll have to try that. If you're looking for fabulous, Oregon-made leathergoods, my cousin and his wife own Lotus Leather Studio on Etsy. They're based out of Canby. They made me a custom cross body purse with Mt. Hood and cherries on it.

I'm thinking outside the box( or water bottle if you will), but I think the the acrylic bottle could also be used as a vase or as a root starter for plant cuttings. Love those dough bowl candles. A twofer.

A note on shipping generally, as I sell on ebay as a small business. Shipping is EXPENSIVE, I cannot absorb those costs without it hurting significantly. I don't want to charge shipping but if I don't I can end up making a loss. I'm not like ASOS or some other big retailer who gets preferential business rates and can also build the costs in to product.
See my pinned comment! :) I’ve sold a lot on eBay, and of course it depends on the cost and what the competitors are selling at, but generally if shipping is $10, I factor it in to the buy it now price and then making shipping free. That’s what I meant by that :) but of course depends on the business and products you’re selling.
I love this! As an Etsy seller, I get excited with every order and put so much care into every item. I tend to have shipping as a separate cost, but am playing around with adding the cost of shipping into my items so shipping is technically free; it’s a good marketing tactic, as Taylor pointed out.
PSA to Etsy sellers: be aware of a scam going around where someone asks to buy art via cashier’s check off Etsy; the check will “mistakenly” be sent for too much and they’ll ask for a refund to the tune of ~$800 and you lose your art. Always sell on Etsy/your shop/etc. unless you’re in person at a craft fair/have a brick and mortar store, and be wary of cashier’s checks, as they’re often (but not always) used in scams.

If you are shopping on Etsy please do not click on the ads. If you're an ad with an item you like open a new browser tab or window and search for that specific shop or item listing and click the non-ad listing. Etsy takes fees when clicking on ads and sometimes shops cannot opt out of this ad fee. Etsy also decided a couple years ago that they want a part of a the shipping charge that seller's ask for, so if you see shipping that's a little higher than others it's because they had to up what they charge for shipping since Etsy takes a piece of it.
i think the 'point' of moissanite and lab maid diamonds is to reduce unethical mining etc. that comes with real diamond more than reducing their cost (: so you'd be doing a great job even if you'd pay more.

Just want to vouch for the Elevado shop on etsy, which Taylor linked to for her hoops. I've bought 2 hoops from them in the last 4 months and they're great quality. If you get the type with a hinge rather than a backing, you can even comfortably sleep/shower with them on.

Shipping is such a pet peeve of mine too! Like I will not purchase a single item if I have to pay for shipping. However, with Etsy I don’t mind as much, because like you mentioned they’re small businesses and I don’t expect the seller to have to cover the cost. However I was looking at pikler’s for my toddler, and since it’s so big and pretty heavy - but it is a cost to the creator so I get it. This is a bad example of Etsy, because this is the only time I’ve experienced this, but the seller was from out of country and ended up scamming my family who went In together for the present - luckily they paid with PayPal, so the Money was refunded very quickly - like I said I have never had that happen before or known anyone to have it happen, most creators are honest and I’ve had great experiences - but you might want to consider paying with PayPal just incase you stumble upon a dishonest seller, since they guarantee your purchase. Just a tip and I really hope it doesn’t deter people from using Etsy (they did an incredible job at removing the seller and handling it on their end too), because it really does help suppoet people’s families and helps spread different peoples creativity.

OK, the starbursts look amazing😉 YUM! So many great finds. My hack for my dish soap is to use an olive oil bottle that has the metal pouring spout at the top. That way I just add a little soap at a time using one hand. It works SO well! (I actually buy the bottle from Dollar Tree😱)
