What a GREAT story and what an honor to meet you here, the writer of this great track!! BTW I first heard this on the Smith & Wesson Funk Music show on Radio 7 FM in Paris in 1981. What year is your club story?
This was my mom's jam back in the day. I dug it too. Came up in convo speaking to my lady about our plans to live the good life... Had to share the vid so she'd know what I was talking about. Thanks for the jam. Didn't remember this is where the Public Enemy sample came from. Dope.
The charts are purchased Like most measures for success in the music industry. Had enough $$$ been paid to grease the wheels It could have been made #1
Yeah, I remember this song. It had good airplay in urban radio (black radio) around 1981. A pity that it didn't chart higher. Maybe because of it not having crossover appeal like MJ, Diana Ross, or Kool & the Gang, who also had pop songs around that time. And if you were a teenager, like me, you might not have been familiar with the Theolonius Monk family. It's a legit song, though.
Peaked at just No. 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1981, his only ever charting Hot 100 single. Should’ve been a MUCH bigger hit. A very nice and catchy, fun R&B tune. I really like this one. Wish I owned the 45 for it. Released off of Mirage Records.
In 1981 I flew the concord from New York to Paris With this record in my bag There was only one other passenger on the flight France,s Frank Sinatra The great Michel Sardau He beckoned me over and we sat together He was gracious enough to take me to his club The biggest dance club in Paris There were 20 kids in line to try n get the DJs to play they're new records Michel introduced me to the DJs they put their headphones on and listened to the BON BON VIE He told me the tempo was not right for 10pm but if I'd wait at midnight he'd play it. About midnight He put it on and 2000 people flipped out and I was left breathless!!! The rest is history All because of the wonderful new friend I had made on that 2 3/4 hour flight Worth every penny I love you Michel! L.Russell Brown
I was reading an article on August Darnell of Kid Creole and the Coconuts fame. The piece described Darnell’s persona of Kid Creole as "a flamboyant, devil-may-care bon vivant". The term, ‘bon vivant’ (Fr.: well living) reminded me of the funk/jazz song “Bon Bon Vie” by TS Monk. And that’s how I got here. True story.
Who remembers this funky classic? I love it!
I remember! Brasil.
I do! 1981 was my Summer of Love and I was only 10 years old. Got my first kiss to this very song. 🥰🥰

I believe this reached #13 on the R&B chart, which is still low for this song.

I think maybe Central Park since they mention it in the song a few times. Not sure, but it is somewhere in NYC.
@@shellyj987 it's clearly in Brooklyn :) as you can see manhattan across the way, so it's somewhere along the belt parkway.
