Roald Dahl's The Witches - National Theatre - review

- Did the National Theatre's musical adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic cast a spell on Paul Seven or did The Witches fail to bewitch him? And how does it compare to the RSC's Roald Dahl musical Matilda? Paul was certainly enchanted by the comic performances of Daniel Rigby, Katherine Kingsley and Sally Ann Triplett. Was he charmed by director Lyndsey Turner's spectacular production with design by Lizzie Clachan? And did Lucy Kirkwood's book and lyrics with music and lyrics by Dave Malloy put a hex on him?

I went to this with my friend for her 40th back in November. I’m still haunted by the music and the costumes. I keep banging about this but I really hope they release the songs on CD. Especially the Grand High witch’s solo and Bruno’s song about sweets.
I’m surprised a soundtrack hasn’t been released. The show has been very popular so my hope is it will get a longer run in the West End and that will be the cue for recording a soundtrack.
I remember watching an Off West End production of The Witches in the 2000’s and it made a strong impression especially the fourth wall breaking.
I’d forgotten this wasn’t the first stage adaptation I think you may have seen the show written by top children’s playwright David Wood.
I loved this show - preferred it to Matilda actually. Easily 4* for me.
I don’t agree but I can understand why you and quite a few others might feel that way. Thanks for the comment.
Do you know if this production has been filmed for NT Live?
I believe so.
Great. Thanks for letting me know. @@TheatreReviewsWithPaulSeven
