      @@harry12 You're quite right, but the question to Andrew was posed by a Canadian permanent resident who was debating whether or not to get Canadian citizenship presumably to secure his place here, something I would personally not recommend to anyone. Once you get a Canadian passport, you could enjoy world travel, with less tension than a US passport. Canada has excellent relations with other countries and does not have the stigma of wars.
    Living in Canada is not that great, but it's passport is great.

    • @747-pilot
      @747-pilot 2 года назад +3

      Yes, there is a STRATEGIC advantage to having a Canadian passport versus a US one, if you are a wealthy individual (or have reasonably high income). Canada does not tax its NON-RESIDENT citizens.
      But to become a non-resident (for tax purposes), you do have to do a bit of a “song and dance”. For example you cannot have any “substantial ties” to Canada (own property, have immediate family, like wife and dependent children, living there etc.), and your physical presence in Canada cannot exceed a certain amount of time.
      And while there is some talk (from the fringes) about citizenship-based taxation, this is not likely to materialize in my humble opinion. That is because I’m sure the politicians are keenly aware that it will be almost impossible to enforce!! (Canada does not have the global might and heft to “force” countries into submission, like the United States does!!).
      Canada, is, after all one the biggest money laundering capitals of the world with all kinds of Ponzi schemes perpetrated on a daily basis by Chinese and other unscrupulous immigrants, on a daily basis, and the government is totally impotent to stop it!!

      @747-pilot 2 года назад

      At first glance, it might seem that way. But those who know how to use the Canadian passport STRATEGICALLY, it can be a BIG win. The biggest asset you have in the Canadian citizenship, is the ACCESS it gives you to the GREATEST country in the world, the one and only UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
      The TN visa (based on the North American free trade agreement) gives you almost unrestricted access to live, work and do business in the US (as long as you are on the approved list of professional occupations, which is fairly extensive).
      You do not have to jump through ANY of the insane hoops that people from other countries (like the H1-b visa) have to, to be able to work in the US! Besides the H1-b has a max validity of 6 years. After that you can never work in the US again, whereas the TN is INDEFINITELY renewable!

    Well, no, Canada does NOT have a residency requirement past the moment you apply for citizenship, so there is not a single reason why not take it. As was said before, Canada does not tax globally, unlike US, so for someone who lives neither in US nor in Canada, Canadian passport is better. Compared to Israel - it depends. There are cases when an Israeli citizen is ineligible for Israeli passport when living abroad. No such cases in Canada. So it could be the case that the Canadian passport is the best of the three for a global citizen.

Canada is a welfare state not just to its own residents, but to the rest of the world. Of course, nothing is really free. Taxes are sky high and government money printing is out of control. Canada is well on the way to becoming Venezuela North. It wasn't always this way. Canada reached its greatest prosperity in 2014 and then a far left government took over. Object lesson in political risk. For people thinking of moving to Canada, make a donation to your favorite charity instead. Your money will be better spent.

    As a Canadian, i say no. Im considering rescinding it. Already talk in Canada of taxing non resident citizens.

      A s-hole country without any TEETH, like Canada, might bring in those rules, but they will never be able to enforce it around the world. The US can bully other countries into submission, is because it is the world’s super power!

      @@747-pilot i disagree. All it takes is the offer to reciprocate in kind for other countries. But enforcement doesn't even matter if they make the penalty a potential jail sentence. No one's going to risk it unless you aren't going back in which case you might as well rescind.
