This layout is going to be amazing- you have a lot of scenes that are going to be so, so eye-catching. I'm also really impressed with your rolling stock collection- you have really captured the modern look/feel.
Great layout plan & concept! Don't forget to add damaged Amazon cartons and debris along the Alameda Corridor route...😂 I have one question for you, though; where are the gangs and homeless encampments along the L.A. Riverbed??? 🤔😉
@@VSLAModelRR - Ha-ha! I'm just busting your chops... I certainly like the depth of field effect with the two separate bridges against the L.A. River backdrop. It really gives the viewer a real glimpse of how congested the area really is today. By the way, I love the work that you did on your UP 1105. It reminds me of the UP Genset assigned to Montclair yard that used to work the branchline industries in south Ontario, CA. It was tagged up mercilessly, too, when I last saw it in 2009.
Magnificent catches of the model trains coming by and pass, I like it 5 stars. Thumbs up. Keep up the perfect work, my friend, just liked and subscribed, Greetings from Portugal to the USA.
My goodness! I will miss the Santa Ana layout! I will miss it dearly. But I know I will have equally as much fun watching this layout grow, and more inspiration to come. Keep making videos! Loving this.
As someone who is also trying to design an urban industrial layout for modern UP/BNSF, this is a fantastic inspiration! I loved the old layout and always looked forward to new videos. Now I can't wait to see this one come to life. (I still think it would be super awesome to add something like a removable connector to the Violet Alley Layout so it can be included in operations 😛)
Yeah, I tried to figure out a way, violet alley in real life is where that scrap yard is, but there isn't room there.. I could always drill through the wall where that LAJ yard is as Violet Alley right on the other side.
Well I loved your old SAIL but it’s great that you’ve rediscovered your motivation and the plans for the new layout are fabulous. The automatic shuttle function is amazing and the shot of the two trains crossing the bridges simultaneously simply epic. Well done and keep up the good work!
I grew up in the valley and worked throughout the area several years. I like how your capturing the peek a boo of the trains going in and out of the buildings. Going to watching your progress!
I was following the old layout to get some ideas and inspiration but this one looks very much a few steps up. Great job, looking forward to the updates!
Nice work! I hope at this point, you feel good about your decision. I can already tell this layout will have some cool scenes and be very "photogenic".
@@VSLAModelRR I am very familiar with the areas you are replicating, often trek there to photograph rolling stock. Your design sensibility, criteria have really captured the locale.
The previous layout looked good, and the new one looks even better. I am building a 10 ft shelf layout and anchoring one end using that art deco bridge that you used.
Very cool, I like the overall track plan. It looks like it'll be a lot of fun to operate! And very cool ISE element to the background, very nice use of that Motorman
Yeah, No one really knew except my wife and family and the layout designer, I wasn't ready to share I just wanted to focus on building it back to this point.
I’m very familiar with the area. Looks great so far. I know how it is… I’ve never finished any layout. I know over time it gets really hard not to start over. But you can do it.
Oh man, you really sounded kind of depressed at the beginning when you started to tear off the old layout. The new one looks excellent already and I´m looking forward to your next steps!
Nah, not depressed, I just knew I had a lot of work in front of me. It all paid off in the end, the room is so much more inviting and the layout is great too.
I thought your other layout was awesome, especially the bridge scene that you kept, but this ...Oh My. I think an easy fix for the stack train would be to use one engine and one dummy with a light board. No worries about speed matching falling in/out of sync.
I don't mind speed matching, I've done it with my local power, I just need to do it, just not high on the priority list right now. I had a couple consisted and it was pretty cool but I think it was a BNSF and UP together lol, need to make them company matched as well as decoder matched too. Soon..
Working with Lance was great. It was helpful that he already knows the area since he has a Vernon based layout and has a few more in his books. He does a good job 'level-setting' you
Your new model railroad is awesome. I have observed the UP and BNSF in the areas you are modeling for many years because it is so facinating. You have inspirfed me to do something much smaller though. What type and dimension of plywood do you use as the layout base? Can't wait to see your next progress video.
Thanks! I just used 1/4 inch sanded for the tabletops and then put 1.5 inch or 2 inch foam on top. I don't see the need to use anything thicker but the layout is in my basement which is climate controlled.
I like the LAJ. I know someone who works there it is now BNSF love the riverbeds I grew up there. Looks like it's going to be awesome really like the Santa Ana theme I got to know what did you do with that bridge going over the 5 Freeway?
How deep is your LA River? I am looking at doing a similar concrete river (not LA) and was wondering what a good depth is for these type of rivers to include the slopes and walls etc? Am looking at 75mm ? Yours looks like it may be more? Thanks
Hi, thanks for asking. The river itself is 2.5 inches (65mm) deep. I screwed a 1x3 piece of lumber to the bottom, and the styrene walls lean up agiainst it for now. The walls are two different lengths. The front right, sort of by the Fascia, is 4.5 inches (115mm), the angle is shallower thus the longer cut. The parts by the bridges and then back to the wall are 3.75 in (95mm) long. The LA river has different wall angles as it rolls around so I used different sizes for different looks. I was just eyeballing it and that looked good to me. I think for the prototype I'd need a shallower angle by the front part.
@VSLAModelRR - The riverbed bank slopes look proportionate to how I remember them when I grew up in L.A. The slopes were much lower and shallower than the San Gabriel or Santa Ana riverbeds. Great work! 👍
New layout looks fantastic but I thought old layout looked great as well. What did you dislike about it that made you throw away hundreds of hours of hard work and start over?
The LA River scene is the most effective use of a backdrop I've ever seen. Just fantastic!
Very nice concept. I like the Alameda corridor running as a back drop set-up.
Your LA River scene is phenominal - and I mean that!! The layout is a great concept, love it!
Oh man!!! Dude...this is going to be sick!! Very original and unique! Can't wait to see more!
Wow..I grew up in Maywood back in the 70’s,spent a lot of time in Vernon..lots of memories..I look forward to seeing your progress..thx

Nice upgrade! That takes courage to execute. Signature scenes will aid in the layout fresh!

I don't have to model it Exact exact..

Thanks! Like I said, somewhere in the video there may be small switching layout of the SAIL at some point!
Great layout of the LA River yard. Nostalgic last move railroading. Love it! know all your locations well. Ron//

one of my fav railroads , the LAJ
Looking real nice, I wish her L.A Alameda Corridor track ran all the way around the room that would be cool continuous running

Its sitting on a shelf right outside the layout room
@SAILModelRR You did a great job on that bridge. I was impressed the first time you showed it.
Thanks

What shelving did you use under the original layout?
Ikea IVAR for both the old and new, just re-used it all
New layout looks fantastic but I thought old layout looked great as well. What did you dislike about it that made you throw away hundreds of hours of hard work and start over?
Mainly the large island and the backdrop blocking the view, the room wasn't very inviting
What's the location of the photo at 1:42
Right by UP's J-yard, has to be on the 25th St over pass right near 25th and Alameda. Right before it enters the tunnel
Thanks for the info.
Very Imperssive
