Vernon and South LA Model RR
США
Добавлен 9 окт 2010
Layout Updates, Operations, and How-to Videos on my two Los Angeles based layouts. The main layout is the Vernon and South LA. It is a large around the room layout with a focus on switching operations and yard transfers.
The 2nd layout is a small switching layout just outside the layout room called Violet Alley which is a model of a street and spur where boxcars are switched out of a paper recycling industry. It is nearly to scale of the prototype spur.

We need an update on progress on your main Layout!
Nice work
Great modeling ...layout and MUSIC...info on that song appreciated...great tune to listen to when working the layout.
That song is just from the RUclips music library, you should see the info in the video description. Thanks!
Terrific work! You've got a great eye for detail. Question - what speaker(s) are you using in the GP40? It sounds really good, even on my laptop speakers!
I've upgraded most of my locomotive speakers to Scale Sound Systems speakers. They are the best IMO, produced by an audio engineer.
Where does "Violet" come from?
From what I understand, the line started around Violet Street in LA, a little south of 7th street and ran North-South along Sante Fe St. It was just an 'alley' of industries where they actually had to block the train correctly from the yard as there was no runarounds. But anyway, that is how "Violet Alley" got its name.
What do you use for the buildings??
As I say in the video, a combination of things. PVC board, Styrene, Gatorfoam for the two big buildings. The one to the far left is a partial Walthers kit.
Thank you for the information.
Awesome modeling there! I really like this scene. You mentioned PVC board for your loading dock, where did you get it?
Home Depot. That piece is was a 2x4 foot slab, 1/2 inch.
Kool update 😎 !!!
Great modeling....like how you went over the materials used to build structures except the overpass...did you show a build on a different video
No, I didn't. I think I took some footage of the bridge build, I'd have to go back through my stuff and see. The paint and outside was done similar to Boomers Overpass if you saw his build.
Nice layout and great work on the scenery/buildings.
Thanks!
Interesting concept glueing these Aluminium supports to the walls of that structure from the inside. Great progress, love your layout(s)!
Cool video
Thanks!
Had looked forward to an update. Yeah!
I should have the main layout updated next week too!
Awesome detail. Subscribed! ✔️
Thanks 👍
Graffiti is amazing!
Fantastic work layout looks great nice update video thanks for sharing with us. Have a great rest of your day 😎🚂🫵TSM
Excellent progress, the street scene with the grubby industrial buildings looks fantastic 👍👍
Many thanks
Very realistic job- just love these updates. One thought for the "brick" building: you could cut holes where the "windows" got sealed up, and the laminate a second photo-wallpaper layer behind it to add some depth. Also would absolutely add the hanging warehouse door you're contemplating. Thanks for sharing- inspirational! (also: love your rolling stock- just beautiful).
Thanks. If I end up going with the wallpaper for that building, I will surely go that route. I'd like to do a more 3D surface structure with photo wallpaper at some point. The artist that did all the rolling stock in this video, I put his info is in the description of this video, his FB 'gallery' so to speak. Check it out, lots of great stuff!!
@@VSLAModelRR Oh those are Scott's work! Yes, he's terrific. Thanks for sharing!
@@pacificcoasttrains3785 No, his name is Preston but I think I know who you are talking about and yes, he also is fantastic.
I used to photograph bands and various people in the old Violet Alley track back in the 80s. There was still a track up to 7th St. then, but I'm pretty sure it had already stopped being used by then. Then I went back and took shots of whatever i could find left back around 05. The last car I remember seeing being parked in the area was a tank car on Palmetto St. S of Mateo. That was the late 80s. That area has been so gentrified now, you can't even recognize it.
Jump to 26:18 in the video (near the end), you can see the old paperwork from that area with all the industries. I have 4 pages of it but only put one in the video.
@@VSLAModelRR Yeah, that's pretty cool. I guess the way they worked a lot of that was having to just back in and do everything at the same time. One of my fave spots in the area is where you can see the old curving RoW over by Industrial St. / Mill St. and Mateo. That was a wye back in the day and still had tracks in the 80s.
I like the road... I know it's not easy to install concrete grade on a long distance like you did. It needs precision. Very realistic. Nice to see weathered cars and engines running thru. Congrats.
Love it!! Keep up the vids!! Looks great!! Great details!
Thanks!
Great looking layout. Your weathered cars and scenery are also really great. The yellow plugs, how did you get the red/black bus wires to stay in the holes?
Those are from Amazon and have maybe 6 inches of wires on them already. I soldered them to my bus line. I will put a link in the video description. As for the cars, many (not all) of the weathered/tagged cars are done by artists I found in FB groups or on Ebay. One artist that has done a lot for me and all of the cars in this video is linked in the description. Thanks!
@@VSLAModelRR Amazing. Everything is coming out great, keep up the good work. Those little metal blocks that you have, where do you get those?
The yellow plugs are XT60 connectors. Widely used in the RC hobby world. They also have bigger XT90 and smaller XT30 connectors. You can solder your wires to them if you purchase just the connectors themselves.
@@avelkhemchan6640 Ahh yes, they were the same as my old RC car battery connections!
@@TheGomes412 123 blocks? Those I got on Amazon but I know places that sell engineering stuff would have them as well.
Great layout plan & concept! Don't forget to add damaged Amazon cartons and debris along the Alameda Corridor route...😂 I have one question for you, though; where are the gangs and homeless encampments along the L.A. Riverbed??? 🤔😉
I don't have to model it Exact exact..
@@VSLAModelRR - Ha-ha! I'm just busting your chops... I certainly like the depth of field effect with the two separate bridges against the L.A. River backdrop. It really gives the viewer a real glimpse of how congested the area really is today. By the way, I love the work that you did on your UP 1105. It reminds me of the UP Genset assigned to Montclair yard that used to work the branchline industries in south Ontario, CA. It was tagged up mercilessly, too, when I last saw it in 2009.
Hi, what you've created is very nice. I watched cars door modification very closely. I bought two Prairie Shadows cars for that purpose. Are you planing to finish the inside ? Also... Do you know what material is prototype floor made of ? Metal or wood. Keep on your good work.
Funny you should ask. I just came across an old MR article from Sept. 2015 on how to detail the inside of an empty boxcar and debris. I think I might do that for one of these. The article says the floor could be wood or metal, so not sure. Maybe check the real boxcar manf. website. Also, I took the door off of an Aurora box care, not Prairie Shadows, so I'm not sure if it works on that brand or not.
@@VSLAModelRR You're damn right. I bought Prairie Shadows cars because I like them a lot. But in fact, I was suppose to buy an Aurora model for the job. I wouldn't try to remove doors from a Prairie Shadows car. They're mold in the casting !!! Still I think it's a dangerous task to remove top on Aurora's boxcar. It's a $75 car for me (live in Canada). At the end, it's not that important if the car floor is not done to my point of view. It simply depends how many paper rolls are in it. I think I will glue a 20 thou styrene layer on weight, paint it and weather it a bit. I will also hide the weight sides with styrene seen when doors are removed. I REALLY like the picture of paper rolls warehouse. It's a huge building. Thanks for answering and sharing with us. Keep on your good work.
Hey bro, you ever interested in selling you’re UP 1413 GP40-2?
Hey thanks for being a fan of her. Nah, not at this time, I just added a Blunami and brought her to modern day with working ditchlights and some other updates. Maybe in the future. Athearn is actually coming out with 1413 in the future in Primed for Grime, they just announced maybe 2 moths back.
@@VSLAModelRR what about you’re gensets? Let me know you if you have anything for sale!
How deep is your LA River? I am looking at doing a similar concrete river (not LA) and was wondering what a good depth is for these type of rivers to include the slopes and walls etc? Am looking at 75mm ? Yours looks like it may be more? Thanks
Hi, thanks for asking. The river itself is 2.5 inches (65mm) deep. I screwed a 1x3 piece of lumber to the bottom, and the styrene walls lean up agiainst it for now. The walls are two different lengths. The front right, sort of by the Fascia, is 4.5 inches (115mm), the angle is shallower thus the longer cut. The parts by the bridges and then back to the wall are 3.75 in (95mm) long. The LA river has different wall angles as it rolls around so I used different sizes for different looks. I was just eyeballing it and that looked good to me. I think for the prototype I'd need a shallower angle by the front part.
@VSLAModelRR - The riverbed bank slopes look proportionate to how I remember them when I grew up in L.A. The slopes were much lower and shallower than the San Gabriel or Santa Ana riverbeds. Great work! 👍
Cool idea , simple , I have few of these cars
You could wrap the dowels with brown paper for the colour.
Thanks for answering my question great 👍
Great looking paper rolls and great idea for an industry detail.
I am in the process of building my second layout. It's 16'×18' L- shaped. For the past 34 years I've worked for a printing company... I think this is a very neat idea thank you for sharing
Thanks!
I'm modeling HO scale paper mills. Got two of them. It's taking all the space (not that much) I have because I want it to be more accurate in size. Course I got very interested when I saw your warehouse and paper rolls online. Very realistic. I plan to buy an Aurora boxcar and leave doors open like you did. Thanks for sharing your work with us.
Seems like it would be easier just to pry the door off instead of the roof.
yeah, possibly. Although there is a risk of damaging the door details. I might carefully give it a try.
As another commenter said, they’re kraftboard rolls. They’re made in various lengths/sizes depending on what the customer orders. There are also different weights of kraftboard (thickness). The little labels are production labels that list all sorts of product info. The little sharpie line you made is typically a large barcode which the shippers and loaders scan for inventory purposes.
Thanks for the great info!
What a great idea... Surely the doors can be removed without taking the roof off seeing that you know they are only held on by those 2 plastic pins on each side of the door, just put a blade in there and lightly lever them off.. less work than trying to remove the roof and then having to fix it back on again later.
One thing on the cars I'll have to do after actually seeing the inside on the other video, I'll have to remove the weight to have the floor level where it should be. Weight will just be supplemented over the trucks out of sight.
Cut the weight in four then put two pieces over each truck, that would give half the car length free in the middle to fit a floor.
For mine I'll need to carefully rotate the door runners so they lineup with the tracks therefore I'll opt not to use magnets most likely so that the intricate door pays don't get broken from handling. But the magnet idea is a great addition in thought which I hadn't given being I haven't started one yet.
Months ago when I got my first batch and checked one out, this is what I had planned from the start, but haven't yet started one.
Nice job, fast and easy. I wound if in Michael’s/ Hobby Lobby if the lollipop/cake pop sticks might be big enough, it not maybe use them for paper roll
As long as they are at least 1/2 inch thick. For HO, I think 5/8 looks the best as these rolls are about 5-6ft across
That's a nice cardboard facility. I'm working on a Injection Molding plant using a old Deluxe Innovation warehouse, Walthers modern warehouse (933-4067) and Walthers Plastic pellet transfer facility (933-3081). Not to many plastic pellet covered hoppers though. Atlas has the ACF 5250,5701 and 5800 capacity cars. ScaleTrains and Rapido have the ribbed side 5850 Pullman Standard and Procor car. Walthers did offer the NSC 6224 car. The ARI 6224 Center Flow now Greenbrier, Trinity's 6241* and Greenbrier's 6250 capacity cars need to be made in model form. FreightCar America has their 5800 and 6200 car but it looks similar to a NSC 6200 car. *Trinity's 6241 is probably the most popular out there and it definitely should be made into a model.
Yeah, nice plastic pellet hoppers are hard to find. I have some Rapidos and then some Atlas ones from a few years back. That's pretty much it. That cardboard building is the Walthers Modern warehouse, or part of it, as well. Very versatile kit.
@@VSLAModelRR I hoping ScaleTrains make the Trinity car like they did the carbon black hopper in three versions. The early car doesn't have end cut outs. There is definitely a need for more modern hoppers and tank cars.
That’s a cool modeling idea…
Thanks!
Nice job! Can you get the dowels in the sizes you want, or do you have to cut them to size?
Cut them to size. I use my large saw outside but you could cut them with a smaller hand saw too, they are thin.
Neat idea! Are the magnets maybe strong enough that you could glue them inside the box car and the door would still be held in place? That would certainly solve the visual aspect of having conceal/paint the magnets for when the door is closed.
I like the format as a complement to your longer ops vids, and this is a simple but very effective little project. I haven’t decided yet exactly what products will be fabricated in my International Paper plant so I’ll have to give this a try. Thanks!
Chances are they are getting either cardboard rolls or paper rolls inbound..
Coolness!
👍👍👍
here's a vid of a clamp truck in action... ruclips.net/video/nNJIBG5K3OM/видео.html i would LOVE to see this forklift attachment in HO scale
Thanks for that, I felt like I was watching a work video but now I am contemplating how to make one of those clamp attachments for my forklift! I have some ideas...
Thank you. I worked as a RR engineer at a paper mill until it shut down in 2012 and the clamp attachment on those forklifts was what I was about to comment on.
Shapeways used carry one, but now they are done. Look for Model Mechanic or Custom Model Craftsman, they may have done one.
nice vid... those rolls are called kraftliner... they're about 6ft or so tall and weigh around 7 thousand lbs a piece... about 25 or so rolls can fit in a 50ft boxcar... a few more rolls can fit in a 60ft car... you did a nice job making these and they aren't difficult to make... good job
Thanks. It nice having something in model railroading not be a chore..
Any chance for a tutorial on the paper rolls in the car & warehouse shown at the beginning of the video?
Never mind, I found it!
