Michael Jordan 1990: 45 pts vs Celtics (72.4 fg%)

  • This is the 81st game of the 1989-1990 season. In just 35 minutes of play, Jordan managed to score 45 points against the Bird-less Celtics while shooting a blistering 72.4% from the field. Rick Barry wondered aloud just how many points Jordan would have scored had he played more minutes. The way he was shooting, it could have easily been a 50 point game had he played even 5 more minutes. In fact, I think he could have gone for 60 had he played the full 48. He just couldn't miss.
    The Celtics still managed to win, but the game was meaningless as far as playoff implications were concerned.
    Still, Jordan's performance was spectacular even by his standards. 45 points was hardly noteworthy for Jordan during his prime - it was the norm rather than the exception; however, the ridiculous fg% was something special, even for someone who averaged an efficient 33.6 ppg on 52.6% shooting for the year.

    This is how dominant MJ was. At one point when he was asked to play point guard, he recorded 7 straight triple doubles. Then 3 more to make it 10 triple doubles in 11 games. So if Jordan had the ball in his hands like Lebron he would be absolutely devastating. MJ was an all around player (and I mean on both ends of the court) but his scoring prowess overshadowed all his other skills. Just remember,
    #1 all time in bocks for a guard
    #2 all time in steals
    #3 all time in rebounds for a guard
    GOAT

      And he did it legit. Didn't stat chase, came out when games were decided and only played 13 years....missed almost all 86, 94, most 95 and way beyond his prime w wizards. And stats were real when he played.

      What does that actually even mean.... I mean this is the 90’s. Not the 60’s or the 70’s, Oscar Robertson was ahead of his time. Wilt was ahead of his time. Jordan just dominated, he was just that good. If he played today he would average more than he already did. That’s not even debatable, the defense in the 80’s and 90’s isn’t even remotely comparable to the shit show defense you see today. If you breathe on somebody, it’s a foul. Jordan literally got beat tf up on the way to the rim and still posterized you. They played tough in your face defense in the 90’s. The only thing different about today is the increased height of historically shorter positions. That is literally it. Euro ball has all but taken over the NBA. The status quo of 4’s and 5’s has been changed. And not at all for the better... Big men that should be playing back-to-basket (or at least UNDER the basket) low post ball all playing more of a stretch-4 that want to do nothing but stand outside and shoot 3’s all day while 6’5” guards have to try to get the rebounds because of it. That’s why you have those players averaging 7-8 rebs a game. NOT in any way because they’re that good of a rebounder, not because they can jump that high. But because their incompetent bigs won’t get their asses under the bucket. It’s stupid. 6’10” & up players that are skinny bitches and won’t lift any weights that just wana shoot 3’s all day. Get out. There are no Shaq’s anymore. None. There is no “big” anymore in the original sense of the word. There’s just guards, and tall fowards. Jordan from 1990 would dominate now more than he did IN 1990.

    2:47 is the difference between today's shitty NBA and the Golden era of the 80's and early 90's. Yea MJ could have jacked up a 3 on Mchale, which is what today's players would have done, but recognizing the mismatch he took Mchale to the hole and scores on a layup. Can't do that today with the ridiculous zone defense which protects guys and makes it look like teams today play good defense. Thank God for all the people who post these "old" games cause the NBA today is unwatchable!

    • @357twilson
      @357twilson 8 лет назад +2

      +Terrance Stanley What? How old are you? You make me wanna question your knowledge of basketball because Jordan in no way shape or form was head and shoulders better than Bird or Magic. Larry Bird was the better player. Bird was 23-11 vs Jordan and 6-0 in the playoffs against Jordan. In 78-79 the year before Bird came to the Celtics, the Celtics were the worst team in the NBA at 29-53. Bird's first year 78-80 they went from the worst record to the best record in the league with a 61-21 record. Thats plus 32 wins. Bird's 2nd year 80-81 they again had the best record in basketball going 62-20 and won the NBA championship. The next year 81-82 they were 63-19. That's 3 years and each year they won more games than the other. Now lets look at Jordan. In 83-84 the year before Jordan came to the Bulls they were 27-55. Jordan's 1st year 84-85 they were 38-44, still one of the worst records in basketball. Jordan's 2nd year 85-86 they went 30-52, they actually got worse. Well you may say well Jordan got hurt his 2nd year, well let's look at his 3rd year. 86-87 Jordan's 3rd year they went 40-42, still below 500%. So Bird in his first 3 years has a record of 186-60 and an NBA championship along with 3 eastern conference finals appearances. Jordan in his first 3 years has a record of 108-138. No playoff victories, and 0 titles. Facts.

    • @jjs777fzr
      @jjs777fzr 8 лет назад

      They only said that in 92. But Bird still had a winning record against what some folks call the goat. Sorry...the goat is the best all around player that also makes his team better. By that measure MJ falls short. Bird is the best all around player ever.

      @jjs777fzr 8 лет назад

      +Terrance Stanley true he said that in 86 but didnt say he was the greatest. Wilt Chamberlain, MJ both fit in the same category, unmatched athleticism and big point games. But then Russell and Bird has the winning record against both. Individuals don't win games. BIll Walton said it best after MJ scored 63 pts, which was special, but Walton commented after the same, I'd still rather be a Celtic. Why? Because the team won the game. And of course the Celts swept the Bulls in 86 along with the presumed goat. The goat finds a way to get the team win. Both Magic and Bird got championships immediately for their teams. Jordan had to wait till Bird and Magic were old.

  • @ClipCoug
    @ClipCoug 16 лет назад

    And it's easier to be a team player when you have multiple HOF'ers on your team.
    Switch MJ and Larry around, it would be Jordan's Celtics, owning Larry's Bulls.

  • @rrTale
    @rrTale 16 лет назад +1

    Lol it may seem like a great argument that the Bulls only dropped 2 games in '94 but not really. MJ leaves and enter Kukoc and Kerr joining 3 players that were entering their primes - Pippen, Grant and Armstrong. Not much of a surprise they did good that season. But did they win the chip? Again NO.

    Gervin was in his last season in the NBA clearly out of his prime led the Bulls to a 21-43 without MJ that year (when MJ broke his foot). 9-9 with MJ before the post-season. Oakley was still young and not in his prime (unlike Boston's true "Big three" all together in their primes). Woolridge was in his prime at the time and Pippen wasn't even around back then.
    And it's a good thing Pippen had MJ giving him 6 titles, cause Pippen was never proven to be a leader :)

    The way you talk one would think MJ had Pippen, Gervin, Woolridge and Oakley all at the same time and in their primes..
    MJ only got to play with Woolridge 1 full season (his rookie year) and few games of the '86 season after coming back from a broken foot earlier than the doctors and Jerry Krause wanted..Gervin? Forget about him, out of his prime, MJ played 18 games with him.
    Oakley comes in '87 and plays 2 years in Chicago. Pippen comes in '88 not good enough to even crack the starting lineup.

    Cowens 14ppg, 8 reb, 1stl, 1blk.
    Tiny 14ppg, 8 ast, 1stl.
    Cedric Maxwell 17ppg on 61% FG!! 9 reb, 1stl, 1blk
    Pete Maravich (26 games) 11.5ppg on 49% FG.

    Yes Rodman was a crucial adition to the team in '96. He also missed about 20 games that season i wonder why.. If Jordan wasnt a general on that team Rodman would probably ride that team out of the NBA. And again if there's no Jordan in '96 it wasnt gonna be Rodman to get them a chip.

  • @ClipCoug

    Prime Bird, DJ, McHale, Ainge and Boston > MJ. Pistons had prime Dumars, Rodman, and Isiah which is greater than Jordan and a young Pippen.
    And how dare the Celtics have to resort to a game-winning shot by Bird over that lousy Bulls team who made the playoffs with a losing record. Luckily for them MJ didn't have 3 shots when fouled beyond the arc in the game he scored 63 on them down 2 with no time left.

    Mj had Pippen, George Gervin all hall of famers and he also had 20+ ppg scorers like Orlando Woolridge and 2nd leading rebounder in the league Oakley, still couldn't do nothing. If Bird had Oakley, Woolridge and Pippen, no doubt they win the championship, he did after all take Boston to the best record his rookie year without Mchale, Parrish, DJ and Ainge. Because Birds' the greatest team player, he knew jacking up shots doesn't win championships. It's a good thing mj got pippen to show him

    This is just silly contrarianism. Look at the 98 team. Rodman was pretty much at the end, Pippen was injured all year, Kukoc wasn't playing all that well, but Jordan would not let them lose. Bulls added some pieces in 1993-94. 1994-95, the Bulls (34-31) were probably not going to be in the playoffs until MJ came back and the Bulls went on a 13-4 record. Now imagine that 13-4 string over a full year....Bulls draw an easier team than the Magic and may have faced Hakeem's Rockets in the NBA Finals. Could of also happened in 1996 as well.

Facts.

The increase in wins actually is amazing - almost never does just one player change things on a team that terrible and for a 27-55 team to go up that many games represents a large margin, more than could reasonably be expected.
      Oh but wait, there are a few other caveats. Let's look behind the curtains for a second -
      In the '84 - '89 seasons which are his first 5 seasons, MJ had -
      - 43 different teammates
      - 3 different starters EACH season
      - 3 different coaches that were not Phil Jackson
      With that little stability and constantly rotating teammates, nobody could possibly win and yet for the Bulls to actually come close to being a .500 ball club from 27-55 is great.
      MJ had no Allstar teammates in any of his first 5 seasons. Pippen arrived in MJ's 4th season and was hardly an impressive rookie and didnt even start early in his career. He became an Allstar in MJ's 6th season but regressed and was not an Allstar in the '90-'91 season which was their first championship year. In MJ's 7th season, he won his first championship and never let go resulting in 6 rings.
      Meanwhile, Bird had Kevin Mchale and Robert Paris - both Allstars and some of the all time great PF and Centers of the game. He also had Dennis Johnson and Reggie Lewis who was considered a top young player like MJ. Bird won 3 rings.
      Hardly a comparison. MJ entered the NBA on a much shittier team. And yet, MJ managed to take his shitpile and turn it into gold by becoming the greatest dynasty in modern NBA history. He won 6 Championships with zero losses in the Finals while Bird and his super squad won 3 championships while losing twice in the Finals
      Essentially, MJ did more with less. Period.
      FACTS!!

      Ty Wilson you have missed so many other facts that your facts looks just like you wanted to find some stats against Jordan. Man get a life. It took Jordan a bit longer to compose championship team. You really compare great Boston players to bunch od school boys that were playing for the Bulls ? Jordan almost by himself made Bulls champions. Larry had so many talented players that even bench players were better than Bulls starting five in Jordan early years. How many titles Bird has? How many mvps scoring titles defending titles. Facts my Man.

    Rodman was really good, he beat MJ in the playoffs 3 years in a row, the two before that, Bird swept his ass twice, did I mention Bird hit a game winning shot in Jordan's face, yeah, it sucks for you jordan jockers, guess you'll have to live with it :)

      Rodman beat mj in the playoffs three years in a raw? u realize Rodman wasnt the leader of that team right?
      jordan is far better than bird, jordan playoff runs are far better than birds playoff runs. a reguler season game means nothing.
