  • Today we dive into legendary American singer MADONNA. "Into The Groove" is a song recorded for the film Desperately Seeking Susan released in July 1985. It was also featured on her second studio album LIKE A VIRGIN (1984), outside of North America.

    Truly a hallmark of the 80's sound. Percussion, synth bassline carrying the melody. One of the few songs that still get airtime today. Absolutely love it

    Love early Madonna. This song always reminds me of a particular moment in time: 1986. I was asked to DJ a HS dance because I had all the tunes! Ha! The school only had a few 45s. I remember setting up and no one else was in the room and the first thing I put on was THIS! It just bounced around the room and sounded so perfect for an 80s HS dance! I got chills. I’ll never forget it! 🥰

    Funny story about this song- it wasn’t initially supposed to be in the film. Susan Siedlman ( the director ) needed music for the club scene, and Madonna “just happened” to have this song handy. The rest is history. In 1985 it was only released on a 12” single, and later on some foreign pressings of Like A Virgin. Oh- the club she’s dancing in during the video/film is Danceteria- where Madonna worked as a coat check girl, along with Sade, The Beastie Boys, Keith Herring and Seal. Hands down one of my top 3 Madonna songs ever.

      Just wanna ask, have Madonna and Sade ever crossed paths or even knew each other back in the day?
      I've read some gossip they were both staying in the same building and Madonna was having a party playing loud music at midnight when a tired awoken Sade knocked on her door and asked her to tone it down.. ?

    • @joelscottarnold3262
      @joelscottarnold3262 Год назад

      @@carlheese - they all worked together at Danceteria in the early 80’s. I’m sure they all knew each other. I could never figure out why Madonna had the Beastie Boys opening for her on her first tour ( love them, but not exactly a band for Madonna’s demographic back then )- and evidently it was all tied back to the friendships developed when they all worked at that club. I know she and Sade both worked as coat check girls. It wouldn’t surprise me if they lived in the same building or shared apartments.

      @@joelscottarnold3262 Thank you for the additional info. I remember reading it back in the day and not much has been said since then. I remembered the line a red eyed Sade came knocking on Madonna's door as she was awoken by the loud music. Both artists carved their own paths to higher heights and loved them both for many different reasons as well.

    • @carlheese

      @@joelscottarnold3262 The Beastie Boys were iconoclasts. Of course Madonna would be drawn to them having a rebel heart herself but mostly having Aquarius as a rising sign which explains her unorthodox choices throughout her career so I totally get that.

    Love the appreciation for the song and Madonna’s artistry. She wrote this with her friend Steve Bray in his apartment in New York. She laid down the vocal track in his home studio, and apparently you can hear traffic very subtly in the background of the vocal stems. She wrote the lyrics and recorded quickly because there was a cute guy across the street she wanted to go on a date with. Classic Madonna ❤️‍🔥 always putting work first but walkin the walk by living the life she wrote and sang about 👑
    I must correct one thing though… DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN IS A GREAT FILM!! Not only for nostalgic reasons, but because it’s an 80s comedy hit that both critics and audiences loved. The whole cast, including Madonna, are great in it and it’s recognised as one of the key films of the then emerging Third Wave Feminist movement. Definitely worth revisiting if you’ve forgotten how funny and clever it is. Not to mention what an incredible record of the New York underground club and art scene it represents! And the STYLING throughout is 80s perfection.

    Fantastic 80ies tune, these simple monochrome lyrics is a more colourful backdrop, with writer/producer, and Madonna’s former Breakfast Club bandmate Stephen Bray tapping into NYC’s club scene, particularly the Nuyorican freestyle-electro sound. There’s a darkness to the track, its minor key reflecting dimly-lit dance floors, and a strange melancholy echoing the film’s desperate theme. It seems ridiculous now that Madonna could pine for a dance partner, but there she was, tired of dancing all by herself to frenetic Puerto Rican style electro funk.👍💯

    Dad 💯 agree. I am not a Madonna fan, however, this song is irresistible. It’s got all things working in its favor. A performer who was at her peak, an irresistible combination of melody, the crunchiness of the sounds layered together, the perfect tempo which makes it impossible not to dance. Stellar production and arrangement. The song actually is uplifting and just puts me in a good mood. As I said earlier, I am definitely NOT a Madonna fan, but, this is the period of her career I thought she was in her “groove” (pun intended). What I always was perplexed by was that this song was not released as a single in the U.S. (why??), instead it ended up as the B side to the “Dress You Up” single. However, It was released as a single in the U.K. where it was a huge smash. It was her first #1 on the UK singles chart and ended up being her biggest selling song there. Nice reaction gentlemen. Have you covered any of earlier Madonna? I find her debut album “Madonna” to be in a similar vein (sound wise) to this song. Extremely well crafted dance pop songs. A couple of other albums she did which I personally think are outstanding are “True Blue” and “Ray of Light”. Take it easy and keep the reactions coming.
