  • Complete coverage of the Steinstossen Stone Throw, Event 4 from the 2023 Arnold Strongman Classic in Columbus, Ohio (March 4, 2023). Inspired by a traditional strength challenge in Switzerland, this challenge gives each competitor three attempts to throw the eponymous heavy stone for distance.
Mitchell Hooper continues his consistent performance in this one, but a determined Mateusz Kieliszkowski also makes it a much tighter battle heading into the fifth and final event of the competition.

I like the idea of the event, but I can see why it's getting a mixed reception. It's impressive when you consider the weight of the stone, but the throws just look kind of weak because of that. Strongman needs a good balance of difficult and spectacular; Truck Pulls, the wheel of pain, circus barbell stuff, car yokes. This IS a good idea for an event, I just think the execution and the presentation need tweaks.

Finally, height doesn't matter as much as the athlete's power and ability to make use of his speed. The distance is proportional to the speed imparted to the stone, and to the square root of the height from which it is thrown. So, at equal initial speed, throwing from a height of 2 meters gives 5% more distance than throwing from a height of 1.8 meters(sorry, I can't think in feet and inches!).
