Jim is among the best of the best artists who have ever lived. And a prince of men. A genuine living legend. A true super stealth agent of shield 🇺🇲💥💯👍❤️🌟
I met Jim when I was 13 in 1972. But 1st the backstory: My father was a Nurse's uniform salesman. He used to take me on his trips up & down the east coast of the U.S. when I had breaks from school. He had an account in Reading, PA. named Vespico who owned a Uniform store. A wonderful man who had survived the death camp at Auschwitz. While my dad was showing his line he happened to mention that I was with him so he could show me the steel & mining country that helped make America a powerhouse economy. My father had me sit and be quiet off to the side and I was reading my copy of Steranko's History of the Comics Vol. 1. Vespico noticed this and asked if I was a comics fan. Of course I was, and I loved this guy Steranko's art. What happened next blew my 13 year old mind. Vespico proceeds to tell my dad and I that when Steranko was a young man, Vespico hired him to paint billboards for him around the Reading area. Wow!! He still had his phone # and gave it to my dad. He said call him and tell him that Vespico said to give me some time. I couldn't believe this. I was going to speak to The Man himself. So, after we left his store we found the nearest phonebooth (yeah, No cellphones) and I dialed the number (my hands were actually sweating, I was so nervous) and a voice on the other end picked up and it was Him! I introduced myself and explained what Vespico told me to say and he immediately remininced about what it was like to work for Vespico back in the 50's. I said that I would love to interview him for my jhs paper but he then said he was very busy finishing a painting (G-8 I think) and working on Vol. 2 of the History of Comics. But, he said if I would let him know the next time I was going to be in Reading that he would make time for me and sit for an interview. (That evening is a story in itself). I'm 63 now and he's 84. Time goes by too fast. But one thing doesn't change. He is and always will be the Greatest comicbook artist to me. And one hellava nice guy. Especially to a 13 year old kid from L.I. As Steranko says "Best Wishes, Pal."
Met him a couple times, one of the best in my opinion. He has a style and charisma unlike any other comic artist. Loved hearing his stories. Glad I own a few original comics with his work
