  • Once you have your retriever through formal hand training, retrieving and cover, it's time to start thinking about their first hunting season. While it's impossible to recreate every hunting situation your gundog might be put in over the next 10+ years, there are plenty that you can think of and train for. As you move through this stage of your hunting dog training, it's important correct any problems. Mistakes will happen, but it provides a teachable moment for both you and your retriever. Take the time to fix it right then and there to have your retriever fully prepared. That first hunting season is an important building block in your dog training. It's about your gundog, not about how birds you tally at the end of the season.

I have a problem with my dog that I was hoping you could answer, my dog does all of this stuff right but when you give her a real big she doesn’t want to pick up any real birds, do you know anyway I could fix that?

Joe Hank my dog did the same. Use a fake bird that looks real. Then use a number with feathers. Until your dog gets used to the feathers and taste in there mouth, then use a bird

Great information here. I have my first Hunting lab coming in 4 weeks and will most likely binge watch your channel this weekend. I am a new water fowl hunter and am looking forward to a new style of hunting other than Deer. I think It will help that I live on a private pond.

Is the dog still trainable in hunting given that the black labrador is mix breed(Dalmatian and Black labrador), almost 1 year old and hyper.

Can I still train my 3 year Old Labrador for retrieving?

Will be tougher than training them from a pup, but definitely doable, they're smart dogs and it's in their blood.
