As an owner of a 1989 Toyota 4x4 3vze standard cab pickup with the 5 speed manual transmission for over 27 years with my father being the original owner, if taken care of this engine is extremely reliable, smooth and quiet. I do change my coolant every three years. Several years ago I did the valve shim adjustment and overall I do keep the truck well maintained, so operates like a new vehicle. Also to note, my vehicle is stock.
Good to hear that your experience has been positive with this engine. Others haven’t been so lucky. Have you had the pleasure of replacing your valve cover gaskets on your engine yet? - Sean
Frig me, realizing you have to take the plenum off to get to the spark plugs on passenger side of this engine 😭😭😭 and if not for the spark plugs, most certainly for the fuel injectors. Thanks for this... I'm terrified, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Timmy, off topic question. I know you always seem to answer most questions. Without me having to go back through your many videos, what grease/lube do you use for ball joint c clamp threads??? I can't remember which product you use. Thanks
100% this would definitely be something we want to document - that future video would apply to a 89-95 pickup or a 2nd gen 4runner. we have the transmission, now we just need to source the additional parts to get started. - Sean
Those things are worth their weight in gold. I couldn't imagine not having those 120 click point ratchets and flex head ratcheting box end wrenches. Absolute game changers.
@@TimmyTheToolman Not dogging on the 120 click point but you can for sure get that bolt out with a regular old ratchet. Also if you crack it loose then you can use a stubby to increase speed.
@@danielboughton3624 But, 120 ratchets are the BOMB!!! In tight areas, they really shine. I couldn't imagine going back to 90 or lower click point ratchets. You got to get yourself some Daniel and then you'll be a believer.
15:01 --- Am I trippin or what the hell is that hose? does that come from the upper radiator hose/ water thing junction???? i have never seen a 3vze look anything like that and now u have me curious if i have that other hard line too (the one you removed that hose from). also is it just me or was that TPS backwards on the throttle body.... or is mine lol.... im no expert and have been learning my 3vze 94 4runner 4x4 inside and out the past few years and just genuinely curious why ours looks a lot different there. just 5th owner of a vehicle problems ( 4 dummys before me throwin tonka truck parts on) lol???
at about 43:00 min in you got the valve covers off and its all cleaned up nice, you can see small bits and wires from the brush sitting in the little puddles of oil left in the valves. How do you ensure you clean everything out especially stuff that is deeper than you can't see?
Sic maintenance mods! Thank you guys for always coming through for the Toyota community!
You bet!
👍🏻

Yes, when I performed the valve shim adjustment back in 2017.
The legendary 3.slow LOL. I’ve heard people call it that.😂
Not sure how legendary it is.. it’s def known for its shortcomings.
- Sean
Wish my 3.blow would start 🤣 miss driving mine, but 5vzfe swap coming, and I'll be using your videos for reference 👌
Good luck with the 5VZ Swap when you get around to doing it.
@@TimmyTheToolman thank you

It's definitely not the easiest Toyota engine to work on. The sea of vacuum hoses is pretty intimidating to deal with.
Hell yeah brotha 😮

Any all-purpose grease would work.
Should there be some consern of distorting or bending the cam shaft when removing the rear cam collers ?
Please do an extensive video on doing a manual swap. I really want to do mine but if I do it’ll be the biggest job I’ll ever do

1st! ... luv this '90 rig already
Right on! We will have more updates on this build soon! Stay tuned 😎

It’s mine
Could you remove the 4 screws at the Reed valve to lessen the struggle get the plunium up off that rear hose at the back engine?
Awesome 👏 video
Thank you 👍

Where do you get rubber for the cam plugs covers? I just purchased 2 replacements plug cover but there's no rubberization on them
Damn I need a 120 click point ratchet and some flex head 🤗🤗🤗

Bro..... I literally just needed to watch for 15 more seconds lmao. disregard
I have the pink slip

We just wiped it out with rags, some brake cleaner and then some compressed air.

noooooo just switch the engine. engine is a pita.
You’re not wrong 😂
