You will get there! Do your best to clean up room echo and stray noise. Just make a vocal tent with an old bed comforter and you will be 80% of the way there.
The best lesson I have learned recently is to work quickly. I was taking a week to mix one of my songs. With my last song, I gave myself 4 hours to mix an entire song and guess what? It sounded better!
Great video. I downloaded the metal mixing cheat sheet 🙂 I've got one question regarding that sheet. It mentions ": For instruments like drums or guitars with multiple microphones, high/low pass filters should be on the GROUP BUS and NOT on individual tracks" What if I I'm using a kick sample or the kick of a midi drum rack ? Those the same advise apply (no high/low pass filters on the individual track) ?
Hi there Bobby, I’ve noticed that when you use Cubase Channel EQ it puts your moves after all the processing With plugins. So when you clean up the muddiness from a vocal and then slap the compressor, you haven’t really cleaned up those frequencies going into the compressor, so the compressor reacts to them. Am I right? I’m still a bit confused. How does it still sound so good though? 😅
Hello my boss you are my mentor and I have watched all your videos you are so so super great please I want you to help me with afro vocals mixing tutorial you are super good on mixing ...
Hola!! Por qué usas el Cla2a después del Cla76 comprimiendo tan poco si después pones el limitador? No podrías comprimir más y así limitar menos. Gracias por el vídeo. Quedo sonando muy bien!!
My chain would be EQ (Linear) > Soothe2 > kazrog compressor > ( whatever really needs next based on what's going on) > something like Gulfoss or another MB EQ... before I do all of this I manually turn down the transients of the high peaks if there are any
THANK YOU, your vids are always interesting. I still use a handful of Waves plugins, but since all of their constant shenanigans over the last few yrs, and lack of customer consideration in doing that, I've been weaning myself away from them for that time period, and going more toward Plugin Alliance stuff, like Brainworx and also ADPTR (those for analysis), and others, and then also heavy on Izotope. I do like the Waves CLA compressors for some things, but prefer using their 3-knob MV2, with both low and high compression on the same plugin. BUT on vocals, I start with the Nectar 3 PLUS plugin, with multiple modules and their ASST module to start that process. They have all the same plugins you used within their modules. Waves' Manny M Triple D is also good on vocals to "clean-up" vocal tracks.
Thank you. Very helpful. I never finish anything. For 2 plugins only, I'd choose iZotope Nectar and Neutron comprehensive channel strips for vocals picking and choosing what I do in each as they overlap by a lot.
🙇♂️ _I AM NOT WORTHY!_ 🙇♂️ I was indeed pleasantly surprised to see the use of 2 compressors, as I’ve been told it’s a common trick. I haven’t any ideas to offer, but I will most assuredly take advantage of this challenge 🤠👍
sometimes I fly the vocal chain as well and I hear it sounds good, but I go further and think: "if I spend some more time on it, it will sound awesome". In the end, I'm happy, but I feel like that If I stop when I've finished flying the vocal chain it would be better, it's just that wrong thought about more time = better; I guess because most of us, as humans, think more time = more effort, and more effort = better results, in general. In the music field we have to worry about other things as well tho, like ear fatigue: more time = more ear fatigue = losing frequencies = ruining the mix. Anyway, vocals on that are sounding good, I'm listening through my iPhone and I can hear some harshness in that 3kHz as well, 10 seconds to fix that and you mixed very good sounding vocals in 5 mins and 10 seconds. Finally, I also use the C6 to shape the vocal, I put an eq before as well, but I only use filters on that, I don't actually use any other bands. I have to try it in order to give the compressor less work. Great video!❤️
I’ve been cheating and using the IK Multimedia Joe Chicarrelli vocal plugin and tweak it a little to get my vocals nice and then I add on like 2 more plugins but I do use outboard gear when I’m going into Pro Tools to start
Bobby, was that vocal track recorded with some compression going in or was it recorded as dry as it could be? I ask this because my vocals sound MUCH more dynamic from what I hear in your vocal track, and I can even see the waveform much fatter. I'm a bit confused because I've heard this is how pros do it and all the dry vocal tracks that I see from other people sound more "mix ready" than anything I've recorded. I have to go pretty high on the gain or threshold in my compressor settings.
cool, i liked the result, pretty much would have assembled a pretty similar chain myself in similar situation. i would definitely also slapped a parallel compression bus to nest it in the mix at the very end
Liberating seeing someone nail a vocal mix in 5 minutes, after I spent a week overthinking and re-mixing the same vocal track over and over. Thanks for making my day, as you do with every video. Cheers mate 👊🏽
When you put that low filter up so high on the delay was like "wtf is he doing?" I paused the video and thought again: "wtff is he doing?" lol Then when I pressed play again and you said why am I not hearing any delay?? I thought ahhhh ok, then wondered how much time it was gonna eat up for you to figure it out lol
If you only had 2 plugins to use for vocals, what are they?!? Drop a comment! 👇👇👇
SSL channel strip and some kind of stereo delay.
JST gain reduction 2 and SSL strip
Pro Q3 and Shadow Hills Class A
2 is not enough...4 would be better. 😉
EQ, Kompressor, Delay and Reverb...
Chowtape, Dresser, One Knob Phatter, One Knob Pressure. Killer stack
This raw vocal sounds better than mine when mixed 🥺

Awesome video, always good lessons. Can you make a 2023 Trap mastering/mixing video. Thanks!
did you apply the eq before or after the autotune?

This is great man. Love your channel.
Wow, you turned him into Joe Elliot!
For rock vocals I suggest the JST Howard Benson’s vocal plugin and the Waves CLA Vocals and the IK Multimedia Joe Chiccarelli vocal plugin
Decent for screaming as well?
@@DamageInc86 yep. Look it up and you’ll see
Totally fun to watch!!😍😍
Nice video thanks!
Thanks!! Your information is very helpful. I wish my recordings would sound like yours.

Don't worry, this was a well recorded vocal probably through a good mic and analogue compressors. Mine sounds nothing like that too 😂
cool, i liked the result, pretty much would have assembled a pretty similar chain myself in similar situation.

You're putting delay on the channel instead of creating a send?
Liberating seeing someone nail a vocal mix in 5 minutes, after I spent a week overthinking and re-mixing the same vocal track over and over. Thanks for making my day, as you do with every video. Cheers mate 👊🏽
I've done that a lot. We are our own worst critics.
How come your EQ isn't in linear phase mode?
Great format for RUclips! Well done.
Will this work for rap vocals
Love this format
Great example. Would I assume correctly that the crackles and noise heard at 6:40 on the vocals are due to the CPU load with screen capture?

Ate up too much time lol! Got sloppy with that one 😅
