There were many fine, skilled, talented pianists in this competition - as is expected in a contest of this level of prestige - + there was one genuine discovery - Jaehong Park! His performances from the earlier stages of the competition caught my attention with their very rare quality of musical coherence and fantastic, always masterfully listened and executed tone - beside the pianist's total lack of effort with the technical aspect of playing. This is a pianist whom I will definitely seek to listen to in the future.

The Italian pianist Giovanni Bellucci started the piano at the age of 14 and went on to have a big career. That is a much greater achievement than Park. The Greek pianist Dimitris Sgouros performed the Rachmaninoff 3rd Concerto at Carnegie Hall when he was only 12. He recorded it for a major label (EMI) at the age of 15. Read about him. Again, much greater achievements than Park.

He is a wonderful talented and very capable pianist. Close your eyes or put head phone on, just enjoy listenniing to Rachmaninoff at its best, or walk around, don't need to be distracted by his appearance. He' ll out grow his outward appearance, and learn to close his mouth, but his performance ability will get stronger as he aged beyond 17. I don't think there are too many young people, who can play like this. Stop judging the outer appearance.... that so petty and ridiculous!!!

Amazing technique not enough to win competition because everyone has it. Musicality, timing and feeling/soul that many new pianist lack nowadays.
I got no thrill listen to him with eyes close, let alone watching his expression that is not related to the melody his playing.
Anyway, he's up there already and pretty sure will have lot of time for that.

      @@liisaimmonen9765"Presumptuous"...?
I don't think you've seen many amazing skill Pianist under 16 yet 😅
We have alot like him in US, especially in China you can find anyone as skill as he is.
3rd place is still good though, that's what he deserves. I don't see him come to 1st because he is not there yet. His body language, expression did not exactly corelate to the melodies. Lang lang does like that, BUT everything "corelate" and align with the melody and the orchestra. He seems almost playing for himself. Artist are slave to Music and audience, because that's what we do. We serve and move people through music. I don't feel moved at all. He is up there already, he just need all the things that I described on the previous post to win the whole thing that's all.

@@liisaimmonen9765 Don't bother to feel sorry for me 😉.
I'll give you a little piece of suggestions what it's called music that is born with it.
      "Anna Federova"
      That's what it's called music.
If you don't move by her performance, then I feel sorry for you too. She is one of a kind that is so lyrical, glue with the orchestra, every expression is connected. She also lead the orchestra and bring the audience to the climax like Rachmaninoff himself.
All the point that I mentioned before actually easy to develop and taught by a teacher who willing to share. For top skill like him, he only need a day and he can win the whole thing because he already got the technique - that's all.
I did not mention his mouth though, am sorry if you though so. I like Lang lang expression because there is correlation to his music flowing through the melodies and the rest of orchestra.
As a conductor choir and piano teacher who won many competition in my old days, I really understand about music. I remember lost for the first 5 times of my career, but when I got a chance to meet a right teacher who "WILLING" to share his secret about what it's called "MUSIC", everything changed.
Since then my choir won multiple time against many amazing choir with the best conductor. We always got standing ovation because we move people and the jurry. Nothing more than excited to make audience happy. If we play by ourselves and disconnected with audience, even 1 year old baby can cry. Anyone in the world - I mean it, from age 1 to 99 can understand good music by heart, but they can not explain it. If someone can move all of them, that's music. There's a secret to that and only a few "WILLING" to share it because it is high valuable asset.

@@liisaimmonen9765 you misunderstood his point. Jaehong skill already at peak. He just need one master class to win the whole thing. Personal taste nothing to do with music because it can be understood by everyone in the world.
I still remember watching Arthur rubenstein on RUclips criticize Vladimir Horowitz about his lack of musicality. I was shock hearing that because Vladimir is God. After watching many performances from top Pianist, I finally understand that.

@@liisaimmonen9765 There is nothing off about technique not enough to win competition. Yundi Li for example, his hands technique is something else that I don't really like at all. But he was the winner at prestige competition because he really touch audience heart. Yundi can touch people soul through his finger with full velocity from soft to forte. Music is not about taste anymore if the performer put everything in it. 80% Audience also don't understand wrong notes, but clarity melody and chord has to deliver with fluid. For some reason, there are some mess (perfect notes) in Park Jaehong performance that I could not hear because he did not playing the pedal in timely manner. If he know this, the sound would be cleaner and herd clearly. Something minor like this can make big difference in competition. He did good at Ossia cadenza but only 92%. There are many aspect that need to polish just a little bit for him to be number 1 that sometime we can not accepted. He is amazing Pianist, 💯% has perfect technique and that is true about alot of Pianist has that nowadays. Please see the documentary about music school in US that full of Chinese Pianist that already advance since 9 years old.
The sense of music and soul in playing to communicate with audience is getting less nowadays. Happy easter to you as well. 🙏

@@liisaimmonen9765 My theory is nothing compare to public opinion. Personal taste is the same like genres in music from Classic, Rock, Jazz and Pop. However, after reading Andy's opinion as a conductor talking about Music that can be understand as universal language, that leaves me the idea about opening my view to music in general rather than to my opinion. There's a reason why there are minimum 3 jury as judge in competition, odd numbers. If there is a tie, then the the Jury will see how reaction of the audience because they are the actual Judge. I don't like Rock music, but there are some song that touch my heart as exception. I used to hate Opera, but since I saw Pavarotti perform Nessun Dorma and Carmen sang Habanera, the whole perception suddenly change. Recently I was struck by listening Montserrat Caballé sing so beautiful with amazing technique and soul like no other. She is the only person that I know can sing mezzosopiano and hold it for 18 second.
It takes time to understand music in general rather than personal taste. The key is to understand what you like first from particular song, why and ask many questions about it.
Is that person use full dynamic correctly, timing and many more. But the whole concept of technique will be pointless if they don't perform it without passion, feeling and soul.
Adding face expression is another story if it's good to see then it's a bonus. Jimmy Hendrix facial expression is lovely to see just for example. Most Chinese expression is something else, because they tend to move alot after watching their peers in class and recital, so they mimic that to look expressive. I saw Yundi have tears playing a number. Something like that is hard to fake for sure.
Anyway, each Pianist also have their own style, otherwise they give up their own personality by mimicking others ~ Bill Evans.

I think they are doing it to concentrate on their performances better or to enjoy freedom not really caring what other people think about it. I saw way grosser expressions from other classical musicians.
