In Turkey itself, there is a tradition of having two categories when engraving heads: Sultans (this category also includes viziers etc.), who are distinguished by a turban, and corsairs, who have thick beards and wear a piece of cloth on their heads . I think what is referred to here as montainmen are to be assigned to the corsair category. The Batmans, orcs and others are then the meerschaums of the 21st century :).
