  • The WDR Rundfunkchor is celebrating the “Year of the Organ” in 2021 with Maurice Duruflé's “Messe Cum Jubilo” op.11. The composer and organist Duruflé dedicated the work to his wife Marie-Madeleine Duruflé, who was also an organist herself. The video was produced in August 2021 in St. Kunibert Church in Cologne with organist George Warren on the Kuhn organ.

Many composers have used plainsong and Gregorian chant in their compositions. In my humble opinion only Durufle has managed to reveal the beautiful melodious quality of them. The baritone solo in the gloria ia a wonderful example.

This is a perfect example of how to really do a classical music video. Such wonderful and inventive camera work, and all in that beautiful sunlit interior. Magnificent!

Durufle wrote it for the death of his wife??? Durufle composed this in the 1960s (i say this rather than use its publication date of 1966 because he was a very slow composer), he died in 1986, and she died in 1999.

It seems, like in the english version have been mistakes, of course he composed the piece before his wife died. Sorry for the confusion. We will correct the english version immediately. Thanks for the hint!

Please stop praising this recording with its focus solely on pretty video shots: apart from the baritone soli, the singing is sub-standard and lacking togetherness, making no sense because the choir part is unison, meaning the choir is supposed to sing as one single voice which is not the case here at all ... Just listen to Duruflé´s own recording (with himself as conductor and his wife Marie-Madeleine Duruflé-Chevalier as organist) and you will know how this piece is supposed to sound as the composer intended it: it was originally issued on ERATO and should now be available on Virgin Classics

Durufle did not write this following the death of his wife--she died after him.

Wasn't Durufle involved in a terrible auto accident which confined him for the rest of his life to his apartment? That's what I've heard. No more touring with his wife playing organ recitals and testing new organs.

Great organist with highly alert organ playing, very interesting the sheet music transparently moving now and then in the background of the video ... Poor though the synchronisation of audio and video (here and there, the conductor seems to be one full beat behind ???), as well as the choir not singing together which is especially embarrassing because they are supposed to represent a gregorian choir singing in unison, meaning as one single man !!! Compare this recording to Maurice Duruflé´s own historic recording from the late 1960´s, recorded on ERATO and later reissued on CD by Virgin Classics: over 50 years older yet at least 50 years ahead in musical quality ... Admirable though are the baritone soli, compliments to the soloist! Also a great choice of church and organ, doing just right to Duruflé´s magnificent music ... P.S.: in a professional video, one is not supposed to see cameras or cameramen at work!
