    I've been using james brown songs including this one for about 6 months now for exactly this reason. Really helps with feel and groove. Funky President is one of my favourites.

    If you're playing bass in a band, spend time jamming alone with the drummer. I've played in clubs where there were only house speakers on the floor in front of the stage pointed at the dance floor and I couldn't hear myself play. But it wasn't a problem because I was used to taking all of my cues from the drummer.

    Thanks! Do you have any advice for keeping steady time when you're playing alone? I'm kind of one-man-banding it here, playing a stomp box drum, the bass or guitar, and singing. I can do all that - but I keep speeding up, especially when I hit difficult or high energy parts. When I perform live it's worse. I've tried a metronome in my ear but I've got so much going on I get lost and then I have a wrong beat in my ear I can't get back to!

      No, it’s not true. It’s an old misconception. You can just start with the bass.

    Pardon my metal playin self, but could you offer a more basic explanation of "the pocket"?
    Great vid btw. Thanks.

    • @joldisyri8936
      @joldisyri8936 3 года назад +2

      The pocket is basically locking down with the drummer. When you're deep in the pocket, you're locked in tight with the drummer. Basically, being in sync with the drummer

  • @davidpanzer1166
    @davidpanzer1166 3 года назад +2

    Damn, I wish this was REQUIRED for all bass players to learn. I know so many players who have been around for decades and they have no concept of cutting off their notes or leaving space. That’s what makes them sound so freaking LOUD and thus makes the whole band sound loud and clunky and pocket-less. It makes it hard for the singers to hear themselves so they have to yell. All these elements result in shitty sounding bands and that has led to people not really wanting to go see live bands!

    Ghost note: It has a rhythmic value, but no pitch.

    Could you just write notes down you talk every fast can’t catch up! Good staff. 👍🏽!

  • @1Ratrod

    A ghost note is a rythm asset, it is not "nothing", the fact this man emphasized its presence is my argument.
