Everything you dislike about Regent is why I love Regent….no screaming kids, no amusement park atmosphere, no Cruise Director yelling through a microphone about some silly game. You are right that it’s mostly couples and single friends traveling together so a solo person may get bored with nothing to do. You are a big ship person and that’s ok, there are those who are not. I’ve never been to a show on the four Regent cruises I have been on. After walking for miles each day on the excursions, we are ready to turn in after dinner. I’m so sorry that you are sick and can’t enjoy what Regent has to offer. I hope you will recover soon so you can get out and see the sights.

Don"s niche as a cruise channel is that he never seems to be happy on any cruise. There's always a gripe. I like it. Most channels talk about fun and finding the happy in every down turn. It's nice to see the cynical side that can always find a grey cloud inside of every silver lining. 😂
That said, Im with you on cruise choices. Avoid carnival, RC, and NCL and frankly, any boat with a waterpark or waterslide. Also avoid floating eco disaster eyesores that hold over 6000 people and yet have seating for 600-700 in its buffet. It's like sailing on a walmart.... Unless you like to people watch at walmart, in which case, it's a gas!

These types ARE amazing. I would recommend Oceania. They offer luxury at much better rates than regent, and the food is unmatched. No waterslides. Just a relaxed, mature vibe in which you can choose lobster tail and filet mignon for lunch, any day you like if that's your thing.

What you describe with a fairly negative tone… not the being sick part which is totally a negative experience…but the description of the ship is actually the description of a more refined kind of experience…not tacky at all…what a pleasant change that should be!

Hi Don! Please remember…Norovirus is resistant to alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Please, wash your hands, especially fingertips, with soap and water. Still haven’t seen someone eat any kind of food while holding said food with the palm of their hands.

I think in his case, they missed a spot in cleaning somehow. Its easy to do because of so many areas exist. Plus, unless everyone is wearing plastic gloves, it can still be passed. They might have missed a spot in his room before he got into this room, or they missed some tiny spot where he got a drink. He did exactly what I thought might work too, so I think they missed something somewheres or the cleaning they did, just didn't work. I agree with you! Alcohol just doesn't work the best!

I can’t imagine taking a child on an ultra luxury cruise, they have no facilities for them as you noticed they cater to couples not families. I don’t miss all the slides and other fluff you mentioned as I go on them to find quiet relaxation which is something that is hard to get on a mega ship. You can really see the difference in design philosophy between how ultra luxury lines and main stream lines by looking at the amazing new Silver Nova which replicates a high end land resort at sea, not a theme park.

I really like the small ships mainly because I get to know others and get to meet them more often. The staff get to know you and the planned excursions are made so that you are in small groups in smaller buses which is wonderful. As for sea sickness you can go to the spa and get an acupuncture session for sea sickness. It really works. I do it every time Im on a small cruise ship.

So sorry you are sick. Hope you feel better very soon. There is a trade off with an ultra luxury line. When there are only 600 people onboard the wait staff know we like an outside table with earl grey tea and fresh veggie juice for breakfast and as we are approaching the buffet they are preparing the table for us. That’s a snippet of the service that is possible on a small ship that you can’t get on a mega ship. You have to decide whether that level of service and quality is worth not having water slides, etc. We love both so we hop back and forth between experiences.

I sail pretty much exclusively on the larger Oceania ships….1,200 passengers max…..and that is my favorite. 5-6 specialty restaurants and we are able to dock in places where many of the mega ships can’t. It is port intensive so you need to be in shape and the lack of kids and the amusement park atmosphere is a major plus for me. I was going over excursions for an October Oceania cruise tonight and we only have 2 sea days out of 24. By the time the evening entertainment rolls around we are fighting to stay awake!

Most travelers on this class of ship travel NOT for the flow-rider or the slides or the extreme broadway shows.... they travel to see the small ports.. to experience life in other countries in reality... not the glitzsy huge ports. They travel on ships where everything is included... where service is immaculate... where you get to know the staff and the other passengers and make lifetime friends. It is a wonderful way to travel.... sorry you are missing the point.

Hope you feel better soon and can enjoy your trip. Husband and I just returned from 2 weeks in Hawaii. This was a bucket list trip that became a nightmare. Both of us got norovirus the first 4 days in Honolulu. Then we boarded NCL Pride of America for 7 day cruise around the islands. Due to weather the ship captain cancelled both ports on the big island. So we never saw the volcanoes or black sand beaches. Huge disappointment. Substituted a sea day and 3 days in a cargo port in Kauai-our balcony overlooked the shipping containers☹️. And many of the staff on board were untrained. Next cruise will be from Florida port that I can drive to in an hour instead of an 11+ hours flight.

Hawaii, as an inner mountain west and then west coast girl was slightly closer air and travel wise and has been tropical place I have been first and I adore it. I just hate it when a new place or in your case and Don's here when cruiseline, ship and place sometimes gets tainted,,,do try Hawaii again if you can. think it is best, although I would adore cruising it,,, taking a week or so on each Island and sometimes a week on each side of an Island to make each trip even more simple in a destination...even the so called medium range resorts are just so picture perfect so many places there ,,but I am looking forward to ships and seeing more of Florida and Caribbean now...where I hear there are many more calm water snorkeling places...and of course different wonderful cultures and art and history.

    You are correct:
Norovirus is typically spread by ingesting small particles of fecal matter, eating contaminated food, touching contaminated objects or surfaces and then touching the mouth or eyes, or having direct contact with an infected person. An infected person is the most contagious when symptoms are present and within the first few days of feeling better.
Symptoms usually appear between one to two days after contracting the virus but can appear as early as 12 hours after exposure. Cases typically last between 24 and 48 hours.
    Good luck.

With all of the traveling you have done in the last three days, you might have picked up the virus then. Hope you feel better soon.

I so sorry I had it for the last 4 days also. I like the smaller ships I don't need the flow rider and all that stuff that you have to pay extra for. I like the size of the Princess ships.

We just got off adventure of the seas and my husband had the Nora for 2 days. No one else in our group had it. Can't figure out where he got it. You just have to go threw it and let it work its way out. Ha ha. The cruise was very good though. We love your channel. Kathy and Roger thomson

Whereas I don't like the huge ships with rides and mountain climbing etc.
I don't like the small ships either.
I like having a lot of space and lots of options to choose from
    .Feel better, Don. 😊

Sorry to hear that you've picked up the stomach bug. Hope you feel better soon! Thanks for the overview of the ship and that fact that it's such a different experience from the larger ships (motion). That was a super helpful observation that I never thought of. Hope you're back to normal soon and can enjoy the rest of the experience!

    I ❤ the small ships.
    I only go to relax.
My favorite is The Vision of the Seas.

I dislike all the larger ships, I prefer smaller for better access to ports. When I went on a large cruise ship I do not go on the racetrack, slides etc.I have to hunt to find a peaceful place to relax.

Feel better soon, Don. The small ships are more for relaxation. If I may say so, after all you have been through for this trip, it sounds like that is just what you need. I cruised on Regent once and was the only solo and POC. Someone asked me if I was the tour guide (the cruise went to Cuba.) I still enjoyed that cruise, and I found it refreshing that so many of the other passengers shared my standard for public behavior. ⛴️
