This is not the first time RUclips has come to my rescue. I just fixed the fast idle on my '98 Dakota. Now it runs better than it has in YEARS! Cost me $44.00, and took about 30 minutes. Saved me a grip in garage costs. High five to youtube!
These were EXCELLENT instructions and made this job super simple!!! Unfortunately it didn't solve my particular problem so I just replaced the Idle Air Control Valve with the help of another youtuber, it was absolutely nasty! It started right up and seems to be running smoother. I don't regret changing both parts, I've read that it's a good idea to change them both at the same time anyway. Thanks again, you saved me a lot of time and grief!
Anyone with a Chrysler/Dodge/Ram/Jeep etc from 1996 1997 1998 1999 etc with the jtec style computer (the same ones in the '98 Dodge Dakota), there is a simple solution to the random rough idle and stalling issues. Remove the left torx screw on the PCM computer, add two washers and then replace the screw. Can do the same with the other side, but do them one at a time. The screw seems to be just long enough to eventually ground out a component inside the computer and cause the engine to stall out. Didn't believe it myself, but when I pressed on the screw there in the front the engine died and backing the screw out fixed the issue. On warm days or once the engine was warmed up, the thermal expansion must have been just enough to momentarily ground the component.
i have a 2001 dakota v8 5 speed. what are the odds it is the throttle postition sensor. when i push the clutch in as im coming to a stop the idle drops really low and acts like it wants to stall. but never does. also when i have the ac button on it seems to help with this and tones it down but still idles crazy just not as much
Eric, to be honest I can't remember much about the final diagnosis on that particular vehicle. The family member that owned it sold it not long after I shot those videos, so I never had it back at my shop again.
Okay need some help on my 99 Dakota 5.2 5 speed at normal driving spend I noticed that my truck felt like it was pulling without hitting the gas put a tps and iacv sensor on cleaned all gaskets are new etc etc anyways I put it in neutral as I was driving and it’s holding idle at 2200 rpms but when I come to a stop it goes to a normal idle at about 6 need help ASAP
i have a 2001 v-6 dodge dakota when i start it after its been sitting awhile it idles very rough, like skipping kinda like it wants to stall, after it running for 2 or 3 minutes its smooth out and is fine, it only does it when it first started, is this similar to what yours was doing?? any thoughts or help from any one would be great.
ive got a 93 bronco with a high surging idle and somtimes its a low surging idle. The TPS and IAC sensors both look new. I was told if the TPS was put on backwards it could cause this problem, is that correct? Thanks!
I have the same truck and I just changed my throttle position sensor out and I still have the same problem. I changed the sparkplugs, the sparkplug wires, distributor cap and valve and the ignition coil. But I still have the same rough idle and my truck will sometimes randomly stall. I don't know what to do anymore. I'm thinking about selling my truck because I'm sick of trying to figure out what's wrong. 😔
does it matter which way you twist the tps? I put mine in yesterday, how do you know if you put it on wrong? my 2000 dodge Durango isn't idling high no more just want to make sure.
On my 1990 dodge dakota is the tab that sticks out of the side into the sensor should that be free it does not move at all using my fingers. the truck idle at over 1200 rpms and i put a new throttle position sensor in.
I have a 99 Dodge Dakota V6 Magnum, and at times I can be driving down the road and it just stops. I try to restart it and it will not start. If I wait for about 20 minutes and try to start again it will then start. Could this have anything to do with the throttle position sensor? If not do you have any ideas?
+Harry Sanders Did you figure out what it is? My truck (same make and model) is having same issues. Would greatly appreciate any info. Thanks. Email me at wayne.case78@gmail.com
Wayne Case any information for this? I have a 1998 Dakota doing the same that Harry mentioned. However it usually starts right back up. Replaced ignition coil, dist. cap, plugs, wires, coolant temp sensor, pre cat 02 sensor, sprayed throttle plate, fixed some wires, and still dies randomly and misfires often times but totally randomly.
It can also be the PCM connection. I just tested and any time the connectors are wiggled around the truck dies every time. On the road it is random, and may be an internal issue rather than wiring on the outside
I have 92 Dodge Dakota 3.9L V6 Auto it spits sputters and backfires every cold start for about 10 to 15 min and after a busy day it will not shift into 3rd gear unless i am holding my food down on the gas pedalbut the second i let off the gas pedal and bairly put it back on it down shifts to second i dont know if all this is connected but i am not getting a check engine light and cant figgure it out and honestly dont have a lot of money to put into it but i have to fix it. do you have any knowlege in this area? i took it to a shop and they said it was the o2 senser and i changed it and its still having the issue and i have replaced the throttle position senser still no chage. so if you have anything thoughts that can help that would be awesome thanks for your time.
got a 98 v6.my code tells me its a Throttle/Pedal Sensor High Imput.im assuming either the sensor on the throttle body or the accelerator pedal is either sending/receiving too much voltage,or the TPS has gone awry and the control module cannot pair the two sensors together as having a matching position message.i have noticed a complete, although momentary, loss of power when closing in on 2k rpms and shifting gears.anyone help me narrow this down?
some models do not require the gasket to be used, i know because i have pretty much the same truck mine is a 97 with a 5.2 i replaced the TPS and the OEM one i removed didnt have one and instructions that came with new one stated "place gasket (if needed) if you go to parts store you would most likely get a generic sensor for many applications if you go to dealer to get OEM you will pay for it just some info (lol i laughed when i read your reply though)

It's been 7 years, did the gasket ever get installed?

I had an erratic idle on a 2002 Durango (4.7L) and the TPS was the culprit. Easy, 10 minute repair. And it was only about $30 for an aftermarket part.
WHO is sanding wood in the background?

what do you think of replacing the v6 throttle body with a v8, is it worth it. TB from the salvage yard are $25.
BlackCat 56 did you do it

Idle Air Control Valve
ok my 2000 dodge dakota 3.9 v6 can it be the throttle position sensor needs to be replaced??
You need to pull that back off and put the gasket on it! LMAO! And try not to drop it again or it will look like the first one! :p
LOL
he used an O-ring instead of the gasket

That isn't where the gasket goes

Sounds like an overheating issue

Cam or crank sensor

I have the exact same issue with my 98 dakota sport...did you ever find the problem?
I got the same problem! Can you tell me how you fixed it?
Same problem on my 98 3.9 did any of you end up trying the tps?
Will this bring on the check engine light? Does it have anything to do with the transmission shifting?
You left the gasket off
How much for blue 74 Jensen Healey?
Thank you
where does the injector fire come from

Did it ever stall when you go from park to revese or drive?
mine does this. whats fix?
Interesting and thank you. Mine didn't have a gasket though.
Neither did his when he was done LOL
Thanks that's a big help

guess i'll order one of these, i having that issue now. looks lime a cheap easy fix...hopefully.
great info but you did forget the gasket lol
It's never a bad idea to change your fuel filter. I would do that first.
TheyMightBeRacing change the fuel filter on a 98 dakota?
Can't with this truck. It's IN the gas tank. Of course, you could pull the whole tank off, but that's a pain!
i will add a video if it will help
thanks.
were you high when you did this? You didn't even use the gasket after you were braggin about it. lol
What about the gasket HOTSHOT ? 🙊🙉🙈
What? It fell apart? Some duct tape can fix that. Good as new!
Looks like my dads arm XD
lol... "make sure your gasket is in place..." *places on window cowl*
You forgot to put on the gasket
forgot gasket bud
gasket....gasket.....wow
