The Problem with PRTG Starts with moving on in your Business [ when you are growing ] . PRTG is Fast to setup but will not scale good. If you are running 20000 Sensors and you have probably a Windows EcoSystem if you have PRTG , then you will encouter all the Limitation .
Man, we have so many Problems, because we are using it for such a long time now . ( starting 2010 ! , growing with VMWARE , Docker , Linux -> 20000 Sensors )
If you use SNMP Sensor I would agree , those Sensor are "cheap" BUT in a Windows Enviroment you are talking WMI Sensors / Windows Sensors and those "special" DevOPS Powershell Skript which will give you "expensive" Sensors .
There are so many Limits which put the Limit fast to its END , meaning resulting in slow adding sensors , Devices , Reports and so on . You will find out that you have run into a Problem , when it occurs there are not "Sensors" which gives you a Feedback on the
Paesslers Limits they state in there PDF
    d1c96hlcey6qkb.cloudfront.net/a55bd16c-80e6-49d2-ad3f-0b6c91a82c97/b57824aa806741e89070e5e213712dd2?response-content-disposition=inline%3B%20filename%2A%3DUTF-8%27%27002248_System-Requirements_EN.20201123074608903.pdf&response-content-type=application%2Fpdf&Expires=1608812483&Signature=cMr7iCdkU8wAGFmvZ4inkkkNaU4gTW3LYQm25DsDazC0iQcHdH-QejnTqcMRncKWZ1O9N2WYJ76ljpggfvlRCkOjgECu~BJT~NlbQZMnOLDVX0dHz5zvOL664YUy-QfSMJzz9pN24OLnFZbtvOygyKh9wmh7PJQ1io4LMwt17zNXbnkpZ0nhzEZZGJH2we1~vFSwvxnVw-UnKqPEhiGU9p1khM5BzHxSy1fCijzDrf2Ez0vEbvSryeOHLAArYEgyXz7o6k6Q-5YoC0R5hgA2-5U-SyHI30YbCZ~vIiTbiJ8GdZdm-kC3PTGa0noQfivQ3zdafFmyA6gbNTfeaYfFdw__&Key-Pair-Id=APKAI33AGAEAYCXFBDTA
    • Our general recommendation is to stay below *30 remote probes on one PRTG core server. PRTG still scales well up to 60 remote probes as long as you have
less than 100 sensors per probe* -> that is acutalle a really low Number ( 100 Sensors are not much and that is only in a 5 Minutes Time Windows Monitoring )
the New PRTG Enterprise Subscription starts with "20.000" Sensors @16000Euro / 20000 Dollar and "then" it is flexible to the Information on there Site .
Now a Days we have also Linux ( which the DevOps want to trace with SSH Sensor -> "expensive" as Script Sensors ) ... and Monitor VMWARE Host Status is expensive too . Well the way they have implemented it it is not consistent througout PRTG Versions and limited in "Scanning Interval" and DataVisualisation .
Its like a Insurance , looks good from the Outside , but from the inside there are many limitation if you need the Insurance.
I would say if your Company has an IT Department of 2 and above , there are other Solutions today on the market . ( Promethus, TIC , Telegraf , INCIGA, zabbix ) . If you are a One Man Show IT with 5 Servers ... PRTG is your Program but dont grow larger , it will not grow with your Business and keep always in Mind its Monitoring not "Telemetry" . If you need more real Time Monitoring it will fail you.

Hej Jeremy, I am watching your CBT nuggets and I am wondering how you make those 3750 switches silent? I have 2 of them, they are terribly loud

Open the lid and unplug the fans...yes, seriously. In a lab where you typically power them down, they will survive.

Why you dont try open source monitoring software like Zabbix? Or open source firewall like Pfsense?
Thank you so much for the training.

Good question. Everything has a cost - even open source; often it's the time involved in learning and experimenting and the "EVERYTHING'S DOWN!" panic moment where you realize the only support you've got is some loosely monitored forums. When it comes to super critical things like monitoring, I've been burned too many times by products I thought were awesome, but weren't... Short question, long answer.

@@KeepingITSimple Thank you. We use PRTG too and we have more than 30000 sensors in PRTG, but I like open source products for home.
