What It Takes to Be the World’s Fastest Marathon Runner

  • Kenenisa Bekele is one of the world’s fastest marathon runners. He runs 26.2 miles in half the time it takes the average runner. Every year, the world’s top long-distance runners compete in the Berlin Marathon in a bid to break the world record (of two hours, two minutes, 57 seconds). Berlin’s generally flat course means that runners are more likely to break the record there than at most other marathons. And last year, Bekele came up just six seconds short of the record. Now, in an effort to achieve his ultimate goal, Bekele is training twice a day while exploring the limits of human potential and pushing his body to places few will ever know.

It's the very fewest who actually run this long for more than a single or two miles, On average he's running a mile in the time 4 minutes and 40 seconds for the whole time. Eliud Kipchoge is the fastest marathon runner , the GOAT of marathon...
He's the first man to run a sub 2 marathon and is the world record holder..
He just broke his own record by 30 seconds in Berlin 2022.
Kipchoge is also more consistent and has won all of his marathon races other than two.
No comparison here ...may be on the track where Bekele is undeniably the GOAT

  • @djc0108

I’m a big fan of Bekele’s and Kipchoge’s but I do think it is hard to compare their times - Kipchoge’s Marathon time for London and Berlin improved by nearly 2 minutes after advancements in Nike’s trainers and them having carbon fibre plates integrated allowing a runner to be 4% more economical....Bekele didn’t have this advantage. After suffering injuries and set backs Bekele is no longer in contention with Kipchoge anymore. Both fantastic runners but there’s no doubt Kipchoge’s jump in marathon pb times had a lot to do with the Nike Trainers. I for one though, will be hoping Kipchoge breaks 2 hours in his attempt this October 👍👍👍

There are some comments saying "Marathon runners need more respect than sprinters". That is BS. I say, respect them equally.
It is easy to be fast for 10 seconds. What is not easy is to complete 100 metres in that time.
