If you were late Gavin and missed the "shot" to begin with, then NO AFTERGLOW for you! If you don't participate in the "sex" you don't get the afterglow!
I'm no Simon d'Entremont, but I know that guillemots (a/k/a murres) nest in big colonies on seaside cliffs. I can't find a word for a group of guillemots, so just call it a colony. Technically, a rookery is a nesting colony of rooks. 😉
Don’t be so hard yourself Gavin, that first shot was stunning! Don’t worry about the video posts, you need to hit that renovation job and get it done! Loved the waterfall shot. You make it look so easy man!
Taking the Engishtown fairy cuts off the drive around St. Anne Inlet but you miss one of the best rivers down in a gorge where the water is tea colour. Shooting on the end of the intel facing north over the small marsh there can be breathtaking as well. There is a road that runs on the north side and south side of the Seal Island bridge as well and gives you a different prospective. Now for finding rocks and beaches to shoot I now shoot a pano to make sure I miss nothing and look at all angles and place to shoot from. Point Aconi Lighthouse is an awesome place to shot the rocks and coal seams as well. There is a rock out crop in the water that on days with high winds makes for great splashes. In Bedeck shooting the boats an anchor in the bay where the famous light house is makes for historical iconic shots. I sell a lot of that stuff from all over the island. The Margaret River that runs across the island is a major fault in the island and provided you with some of the best shots of fishing and so much more. The Scottish trail is breathtaking to drive. There is one beach right by the road where you can see the lava flows in the rocks. I know if you ever had a love for scotch, then you have to stop at the distillery there and check out the nectar of the gods. I am going to try to make it back to my loving island this fall to shoot more of what I love there and now that I have learned more I will have the shots I always wanted to get. I have so many shots from there and would love to refine them for even better memories. There is too much to describe in one comment. Just remember that no matter where you go you will leave a piece of your heart in Cape Breton. I know I did! Cheers
Very beautiful waterfall shot. Your whole video was lovely and entertaining watching you and Amanda. It's also neat how you show that mother nature is the boss. Plans and ideas can be made for a great photo but she may not cooperate! Love your stamina and humor through all your photo trips and life adventures!!!!
Looking forward to the smartphone episode. Unlikely a smartphone will beat a pro camera, but as a non-professional, i feel the best camera for unexpected shots was the one i had with me in my pocket 😃
Gavin, I’ve been using an iPhone for landscape photography for the last 7 years. I even employ some of your techniques. I look forward to next week’s episode!
The anxiety from chasing light is rarely discussed, and yet it bites us all in the arse time and again lol. An honest overview Gavin, and nice redemption with the gorgeous waterfall image.
I literally have a recurring nightmare where I come across a perfect sunset scene but there's no way I can get my camera set up in time before the light is gone. And I don't even consider myself a landscape photographer.
Nice video . Hey Gavin when changing vehicle bulbs try n keep your fingers fingerprints off the bulb glass . It creates hotspots which causes the bulb to fail far sooner . Just give em a wipe over with some kitchen roll . Canada never seems to disappoint regardless what time of year it is . Regards Mart UK x
Loving the video, reminds me of my trip yesterday up to Mono Lake to try to get some sunset on the Tufa (we will see how it comes out when i pull into LR later today). Due to stay in the Desert Empire of Central California, some days I think I am following the route of the F4 California Trip Episode 4 (i.e Mono lake, Alabama hills, Valley of fire, Vegas, etc.) Anyway moving on, got you book and thank you very much, love it from the Forward by Uncle Grumpy to the great photos and accompany photos, even the little sticker that was inserted (somewhat Amanda feel to it). If you get out of the great white north in the future drop me a line if you may revist the Central California area or even if the east of trying some shots around West Virginia (some great landscapes o be found there from the New River Gorge to the Shenadoah area or Canaan Area such as Blakcwater Falls. Best to you and the lovely Amanda
i actually liked the first pic - and i am really looking forward to the next video - measure of success is the number of months amanda remains content with your highness
Waterfall shots are always great to shoot. We have 300 of them here in the U.P. of Michigan. I don’t know how far you are from Maine, But Presque Isle has a great hot air balloon festival every year in August. That would make for a few good videos and still shots. 👍
Thanks for another great video! The first location you were at is one of my favorite places in Cape Breton. The pink tint of the rocks and the dramatic coast line is just breathtaking. I too, arrived to late for good light as it does take quite a while to find a good composition when so many options are available.
Your little ferry ride reminded me of a similiar event. At one point in my career, I was stationed on the island of Lefkas, Greece and it was connected to the mainland by a cable ferry. About 250 feet across. The biggest problem was waking up the ferry master early in the morning.
I see you and Thomas Heaton have fallen from the same ship recently as you have the same life vest as each other :-) Great entertaining video as always mate, been watching you for a few years now and you still manage to make me laugh to myself everytime i watch yet still produce some phenomenal images along the way. Hope the renovation work is almost at a point you can move in , really looking forward to seeing how all the hard work has paid off, good luck mate , take care!
Honestly for digital only viewing cell phones do a fine enough job, and realistically as photography becomes more accessible, smaller, lighter... eventually cell phones may take over our industry. I don't think it's quite there yet, but we shall see with your next video. Recommended title for your next book... Chasing Fall With Gavin Hardcastle "Dangerous Locations and where it all went wrong" as a subtitle... with a photo of you slipping on the ice.
Hi, as usual this is a good video 😀. My husband and I love your channel. Yes, you finished with a nice shot of the waterfall. Thank you for telling us the points where you chose to focus stack, I always find that helpful. In light of the huge renovation you both are undertaking, I think you’re doing an awesome job of also putting out videos. I’m glad that you finally got a good nights sleep. Your body really needed that and I’m sure Amanda is happy you had a good nights rest as well. When that charming church is done, you both will have a truly beautiful and unique home. We will be glad for you both when you are able to finally settle into your home.
Don't worry Gavin, a delayed vlog is better than no vlog! The waterfall shot has just the right amount of texture in the water for my taste. I see others have picked up on that garish yellow camera bag which looked like a Shimoda one to me. Guess you have a freebie to test 😉
I really quite like that 1st shot. BUT i freggin love that waterfall. Even without the frozen surroundings it came out amazing. Can't wait to see what you come up with on your phone.
I'm going to disagree with you about that first shot, fototripper. I was watching your approach to the area and I said no way. Can't be done in one composition. Obviously I was wro...er, uh... you know, that word. Anyway, you worked a beautiful image and fine composition out of an impossible situation. Good work! And, Amanda did look especially bright and cheery in that opening sequence. Now, I'm going to continue on and watch the rest of this video.....................OK, I've watched the remainder of the video now. One of the most fun videos you and Amanda have made. Thanks.
Wow! Photography, humor, singing, and car repair! What more could we ask for? I had a hard time with sunset. I hope you go back to that location, it looked like there was a lot to shoot there. I loved the waterfall. I have a hard time accepting phone photography, they do take some great pictures. But they seem to have a hard time with long pictures (subject far away) or where you would use a zoom lens.
Being hospitalised at the moment, I appreciate two things: 1. You give me entertainment. 2. Showing me that breakfast makes the hospital food actually look good 😅
Nice Video Gavin!!! I Waited Saturday... And Halfway Through The Day Sunday On Your New Video.... Them Pictures Looks Awesome Dude... Keep Them Videos Coming :)
When I read your email, I thought: “This is it. Gavin will stop making these videos. Bummer…” Good to see it’s just the end of the book. I tried watching other photography channels, while you went missing, but there’s nothing like Gavin…
My second comment: that was a very pleasant video, especially the ending waterfall. As for the fail earlier: you're right that viewers like to see RUclipsrs' fails occasionally, as that makes you even more relatable. I get lots of "fail" compliments. Maybe I'm a little TOO relatable?
I would let you repair my RV if I had one 🙂 I didn't get to see what Amanda wanted to get at Home Depot. Now I'm curious. I hope you don't give up on that sunset shot on the coast. That is a gorgeous place. Even though you thought your shot wasn't good I like it. I also love the waterfall shot and I can't wait to hear your assessment of the phone photography. Yes, phone cameras have come along way but they still have limitations due to their size, size of chip etc. Thanks for another great video.
Be very very wary of anything that says "high protein" that isn't meat. I have learned the hard way. Pea protein... Look it up. 😅 Digging that yellow Shimoda! You and Tom, hmmm. Thanks for the video Gavin. Very nice!
@@fototripper Matches your pretty yellow jacket. God please don't tell me there's something new and improved on it because I already have 2 Shimodas. I need another like a hole in the head. lol
That is a great composition WITHOUT the sunset... The angle of which the rock cliff (that points north) and the waves crashing into the shoreline at a right angle from your position really enhances the photograph thus the way my eyes naturally follow to the left of the frame... Leading lines definitely takes a role!
Really fantastic video and such a wonderful location! It happens to me a good bit sometimes, turning up juuuuust a touch late to a location and missing that nice side light. More power to ya all yhe same for staying shooting anyways 😊
Amanda has a beautiful voice👍🏼 and once again a excellent video. You two are so funny. Just bought your book (any chance of getting it signed, please😉)📷👍🏼
Word of the Day: Bulbous. I have to use that in a sentence today. As in, "Sir, I pulled you over because your headlights are excessively bulbous". Seriously, I'd watch your videos even if there wasn't a single image or lesson to be learned in them. They're that entertaining. Another good one in the books.
Great video. I really liked both the wide angle sunset and the waterfall. Your comments about the tininess of the ferry ride piqued my interest so that I Google Earth'd it. Looks like a ride of about 145 yards! I am not a golfer, but is that not an easy 9 iron? Since you've shown what a great auto electrician you are, your next video can be used to show us how to replace a cracked windshield.
Assuming you meant me 🤷♂️ You were probably right. But it often depends on the species of birds. Certainly away from the coast. Sea birds yes are found in rookies. Go Gavin 👍
Both Haida and Nisi make filter holders for that lens. Haven't purchased one yet but I was leaning towards the Haida M15 for mine. Oh and i actually really love your first "crap" shot 😉
First: 🤣!!! 5* second: I can totally empathize. My channel was supposed to document building our house from start to finish but eventually the construction and insanity of a forced early move killed video creation. PS: I don't want to discourage you but the (incomplete) core of our house frame was purchased in 2001 and the house 'ain't done yet'. 😜
Nothing better, what about a Twirl! I can empathise, leaving New Scotland to old Scotland, it will be a great trip . The world's shortest ferry line is the Ferry Lina in Töreboda, Sweden. It takes around 20-25 seconds and is hand powered
Can't wait to your comparison. fwiw I have an "old" Sony a7riii and a new iphone 14 pro and for non-print work I can barely tell the difference - although the mSLR is of course, more flexible.
Reminds me of the North Somerset and north Devon coast, some cracking shapes and forms all over the place…that doesn’t get any light most of the year 🤷♂️🤦♂️ and when it does nothing lines up either 🤣 P.s good luck with the continuing renovation. Even with small projects you save tons doing it yourself. And get to use hilariously over powered tools for a giggle (if you keep all your limbs)
Cracking stuff Gavin. Guffaws per minute content at an all-time high! Not wishing to blow your mind but Cadbury's have launched a limited edition Mint Twirl here in the UK. The missus only has four packets left in the fridge after clearing the shelves in Sainsbury's. Get your folks to send some over there ASAP ! (although we are prepared to negotiate a fee for shipping one to Novia Scotia......)
The beauty of PhotoPils is the ability to land that great composition which I think you’ve absolutely nailed as an idea. There will be a point in the year when the sun sets off the end of that Spithead and thereby at the end of the pensinsular you’re stood on. You could plan for all but the weather but the app lets you know when that happens. Just saying. I’d love to do that shot as I think it’s a book seller (no pun). Book looks great by the way but the financial chief won’t let me buy it……. Boo.
You make very entertaining videos, with lots of inspiring viewpoints in any sense, spiced with lots of humor. Thank you for that! - One thing however where I totally disagree, is the standardized presentation of waterfalls as plastic veils and angel hair, - almost painful in contrast with the lively and detail-rich video of the same right before it. I know it’s a matter of taste - but the moment you see the tear in the gypsy girl’s eye something snaps inside… Keep up the GOOD work!
Not a car ferry, but I have been on a pedestrian and bike ferry that only goes across the thames... in West London. Y'know... where there's bridges and the river is pretty narrow lol.
All the images and videos we are looking through, our windows at home, on our TV screens, ipads, laptops, iPhones, from RUclips channel, ... what is it? Which smartphone are you using with such beautiful imagery, dexterity, focus and stability, Gavin sir?

If you need a title for a new book, then you might like "Chasing failure" with Gavin Hardcastle. Thank me later!!!!
Reminds me of the North Somerset and north Devon coast, some cracking shapes and forms all over the place…that doesn’t get any light most of the year 🤷♂️🤦♂️ and when it does nothing lines up either 🤣
P.s good luck with the continuing renovation. Even with small projects you save tons doing it yourself. And get to use hilariously over powered tools for a giggle (if you keep all your limbs)
You two are a fantastic couple! I love your videos!!
It's either sacrilege or genius.
I read “End of an error…” and thought you’d got rid of Sony because of the tag you added😁Carry on
The most entertaining photographer on RUclips! The master of the plug! British humour at its best! 😂😂😂 👍🏾🙏🏾😎
Boo.
Great video.
Beautiful work. Your very cleaver.
I know it’s a matter of taste - but the moment you see the tear in the gypsy girl’s eye something snaps inside…
Keep up the GOOD work!
Beautiful shots!
