I would add that for some devices serial RS232 is the only way to connect at the very first time due too there not IP address defined on the device or this IP address is not defined, so serial conection is needed to check/setup TCP/IP comms.

Thanks for the comment. You can also use the front panel to set the comm address in most cases as well.
