  • In this episode we begin the paint process of the Dodge Ram B2500 Camper van build. It's a 25 year old van and the paint surely shows that. It was an awful burgundy red color that was a remnant of the 90's. We decided to go with a "sand" color Durabak-18 for this job as it's straight forward to apply, and very affordable. Just make sure to buy enough for the project and everything will be fine!

    Wow, when you told me it was thick, I did not think you meant it was as thick as pastry dough lmao. That is so odd because I used the same textured paint on my mustang: ruclips.net/video/LB3-EE8JMSY/видео.html (I started to mix the paint at 7 minutes)
    That van looks amazing dude. Overspray is easy to touch up with this stuff. I would paint those red hinges with a rustoleum gloss or matt black. Also, if you did not sand the chrome bumper, then the bed liner may end up peeling off over time.
    One more tip, the music is a bit loud as you talk. If the music is always on through the montages and the talking, then the video kind of meshes all together. But, if you turned down the music to faint background music or even removed it while you started to talk, it would bring more attention to you from the viewers, increasing watch time.

      Yes dude it was incredibly thick. Not entirely sure if I got a faulty batch, damaged in shipping, or just simple human error. I am satisfied with the outcome and it’s sooo much better then the original red. Props to you for making it look so easy friend!
      I plan on spraying the hinges and already had the paint to do so during the filming of this video. Just ran out of time on this one. Going to spray them a matte black to tie it all together. That’s good advice about the bumpers. I did scuff them up but not a very intensive sanding so we will see how that holds up haha. Thanks for the tips and tricks bro. We have a good community of people!

    Hey, just wanted to point out that it would have helped greatly if you would have used Xylene to thin the product. When working with Durabak you should use Xylene as part of the surface prep by putting some on a rag and wiping the surface down with it. Xylene is also to be used as a thinner. Durabak is usually not that thick but it is common to use at least some Xylene in a Durabak application. Overall, looks like you did a great job, but with the Xylene it would have made the job somewhat easier on you.

    • @SeizeTheAdventureCo
      @SeizeTheAdventureCo  Год назад +4

      Hey thanks for pointing that out. I’ve seen plenty of folks online use Durabak-18 and never once saw them add Xylene directly to their durabak to thin it out. I would use this advice next time if I came into this situation, but now after looking back at my entire experience I believe it’s strictly a quality control problem rather then user error. I bought this first gallon (#1) and it was incredibly viscous and hardened way too quickly. So then after wasting maybe 1/3 of my gallon I ordered another entire gallon. This gallon (#2) was perfect consistency and was easily applied with even coats. There was some errors so decided to buy a quart to do a touch up job and finally be done. I order the exact same product in the exact same color from the exact same distributor. The quart comes and I open it to find a grayish mess that was watery. Stupidly I decide to apply this faulty product to my almost finished master piece to see a very disappointing result of a almost gray brown color when it was supposed to be the sand I originally ordered. I then move to contacting customer service to complain about my quality control experience only to have the representative explain that I must have mixed it wrong… after some explaining and photo evidence the representative agreed to send me a free gallon (#3) and I finally finished the job. This gallon was also perfect consistency and color. So I appreciate your advice, and super glad you found my video. Although the xylene may have helped it doesn’t really explain the reason why I got 2 faulty products, and this company continues to insist it’s user error rather than poor quality control.
      Appreciate the comment, and thanks for watching 🏔🚐💨🤙

      @@SeizeTheAdventureCo Absolutely add Xylene to the Durabak if it is thick like the can you opened. The instructions tell you that it can be thinned with Xylene and how much to use. I have found it necessary to thin it especially when using a shutz gun.

    i watched your videos when building out my astro van and was actually thinking of this exact paint job on my van and debating between a tan/black combo or forest green/black combo!
    your videos are great and have helped tremendously!!

      I appreciate you sticking around and supporting the channel even with the new build! I think the tan/black and green/black combinations are my favorite for a camper van, and I don't think you could go wrong with either.
      Feel free to send pictures of your build to my instagram or email. They can be found in the description of this video. I really enjoy seeing my amazing supporter's vans that are inspired by my build. Would be cool to feature everyone's builds on the channel someway.

    Nice job. I think it looks great. I love the way that grill looks blacked out. I want to do that to my 1998 Dodge van too. Did you remove that "fake chrome" covering before painting it? Mine has some sort of plastic chrome "wrap" covering the entire grill. Or, did you just rough it up with some sandpaper prior to painting and did the paint stick ok? You made painting your van look easy but I know that is a ton of work. Safe travels.

      I just scuffed up the grill with some sandpaper and painted it with the rustoleum bed liner. It came out really even and has held up so far well. Thanks for commenting!

    Why not use the 9 inch roller for the bigger surfaces you would have gotten done much faster and possibly
    Not wasted 1/3 of the first batch… Just a thought

    I was going to put floor tile glue all over my van, and go to Clearwater beach and dump buckets of white sand all over it, because sand reflects heat and light.
    But I chickened out because I might have been arrested for taking the sand.😂🤣

      @SeizeTheAdventureCo  Год назад

      Hello Nolan.
      The amount of wiring in these vans is absolutely insane so I don't blame you for being uncertain how to manage them. I was able to isolate the rear stereo system etc and cut it free. The rest of the wires I zip tied up and put behind the wall on the drivers side. There is still some wire hanging out but it is hidden nicely behind my cabinet and seat. Thanks for watching the videos, we really appreciate your support.

    Is the color sand or tan?

    • @SeizeTheAdventureCo
      @SeizeTheAdventureCo  4 месяца назад

      It’s the sand color I’ve also seen it called “tan” on the website and Amazon. They are the same. Be careful getting different batches of paint though. I’ve got one that was way darker than the original and it looked poor when I did a touch up. Eventually i got the correct shade of “tan” once I messaged the company. Overall the product was awesome I’d use it again.

    Hey bud you can thin that durabak out with Xylene so its not so soupy. You have to stir it with a drill run mixer though, mixing durabak by hand is a handful pardon the pun. I actually am doing my van exactly like yours but with white and im paint my jon boat a combo of blue an white, the blue is the non chunky style an will go on smooth on the bottom of the boat and the white for any surface that will bump into things like the inside and outer rail of the boat to protect against dock wear. Your van looks great bud!

      Right Kirby? That first gallon I had was the equivalent to rolling out wet cement 😂 really quite the shoulder workout if you ask me. The second gallon ended up being much easier to roll out. Then I ordered a quart to touch things up and it was the wrong color!! I complained about quality control and then they finally sent me a free gallon to finish the job. Overall I’m extremely happy with the finished product, but it was hard work. Thanks for commenting!
