From what I have read (I have a T60 also that I have upgraded, and am still upgrading) the chipset limits the amount of ram recognized. I have two 2 gig sticks and it will show 4 gigs of ram but the chipset will only allow it to use 3 gigs. That is what I have read on the Thinkpad blogs anyway. I used two 2 gig sticks because I could not find two 1.5 gig sticks. These are great machines and I too got mine after it was thrown away due to a windows XP company upgrade.
Thanks for the video. I have just recently dumpster dive aka (D&D) a Lenovo T61 laptop and also on a separate D&D I retrieved a Pelican case 1085 cc model that the laptop fits perfectly into. I can't believe on how many laptops and desktops I find being thrown out that work perfectly. So now for some extra cash and a side hustle I do some cheap upgrades and flip them. I want to upgrade my T61 and add windows 10. I basically just want to use mine for writing, posting sells on ebay, offer up ect and editing videos. once again thank you for the info and will sub to learn more. keep up the good work sir.
You could do a few nice cheap upgrades to the T61. 1. Install Middleton bios. That will enable sata2 speeds, Penryn core2duo cpus and remove wifi card whitelist. 2. Install best price-to-performance penryn chip - T8300. Will run faster and cooler and use less power than current cpu and adds extra instructions like SSE 4.1 and better on-chip video decoding. 3. Install better, faster wifi card with wireless n or ac.
Correct me if I’m wrong but this is a t60 not a t61 I think. Like this laptop, t60s have the ibm logo on the palm rest and can only use 3gb of the recognizable 4gb ram. It can only recognize 32-bit OS. T61s can in fact support a 64-bit OS with 8gb of ram and have the thinkpad logo instead of ibm.
The T60 can be upgraded in the BIOS (Lenovo) to accept a 64 bit processor (Core 2 Duo) and OS without any issues. I have a machine like that which I'm working on.

Peppermint 10 works very well. Initially there were problems with the WiFi dropping out, and garbled audio. Sorting out the Linux problems was not for the neophyte. Lubuntu was the cleanest to install. Debian with xfce not so hot. Mint 19 could be a slug at times, but for most part good.
Got one of these off eBay - upgraded the processor to a T7600, and upgraded the RAM to 3GB. But I'm having issues with the palmrest - I think I'm putting it on wrong because when I screw it in, I can still sort of lift up on the edges - how did you do it? I have the keyboard screwed in.

Sorry, but that is really hard to guess. Are you able to enter the bios with the new cpu? If you can, then it's not a bios require updating issue. Could be just a bios configuration issue.
well the battery is nice because other versions of that works just fine on the t60. my mom had a t61 widescreen model laptop and the battery works on the t60 just fine
Im using t61 right now but it has speakers on the side. The SSD really helps but i think your limited how much ramm you use. I also have a T510 w I7, T420 w I7, T530 w I5 and an X220T w I5. All have SSD. My room mate buys and sells laptops so.....
I have a T60 and when I try to install Windows 10 it looks for SATA drivers that don't seem to be on the Win10 disk. I looked on the internet for some but I don't find them. I see you install an Ancronis image and not a Win10 install disk. Where can I get the drivers, and can you give any tips?
I use a clone of a working W10 system. You can try the same. You can also try to change the mode of the hdd in bios between sata/ahci/ide and see if any works directly with your W10 disk.

You can't download memory. You need to buy it and install it inside of your laptop. (You can't download phisical components. It's like trying to download an engine for your car.)

Unless you are really bound to windows 10 for specific software. I would suggest running Linux Lite on it.

My one complaint with Lenovo is the battery, they fix it so you have to use theirs or it will not recharge.
