Judging from Tone of Voice only:
Japanese Erwin sounds very self-assured. That is not a bad thing. But that's about all I can say of his performance.
However, English Erwin has hints of doubt and animosity in his voice, which adds to the complexity of his character and the honesty of their hopeless situation, and in the, it highlights the sheer bravery of himself and in every single soldier in his command.

The way J. Michael Tatum delivers this speech gives me chills every time. You can hear how defeated he feels. Not only is he convincing his soldiers to give up their dreams and lay down their lives for the cause, but he’s also convincing himself that it’s what needs to be done. I don’t exactly feel the same conviction from the sub actor, but you can tell sub Erwin is a fighter 💪🏼

  • @realignallegiance1607

Seeing as the emotion of both voice actors is astoundingly well done, it comes down to which version has the better dialogue. If the English subtitles in the Japanese version are accurate, then I think English dub proves to be superior for a couple of reasons. The first part of both speeches are relatively the same, but it's once the subject of remembering the fallen allies come into play where I think the Dub begins to pull ahead. The final part of the speech is, in my opinion, where the Dub truly shines.
It's really the below finishing lines where I think the Dub proves its superiority over the Sub, which I've listed below.
    English Dub:
Their lives have meaning, because we the living refuse to forget them! - The refusal to forget makes this the stronger claim.
And as we ride to certain death, we trust our successors to do the same for us! - The reason why they trust their successors is because of the following line.
Because my soldiers do not buckle or yield when faced with the cruelty of this world. - Regardless of the enemy, there is no room for giving up, no matter the odds.
    My soldiers push forward!
    My soldiers scream out!
    My soldiers rage!
The above is a perfect succession of emotion. First you push forward against the inevitable foe, followed by your battle cry, ending with the rage of a soldier's wrath.
    English Sub:
The ones who remember them...are us, the living! - Here, it's the same message, but the Dub adds to it with the refusal to forget.
We die trusting the living who follow to find meaning in our lives! - But why trust the living, and what meaning does your death have?
That is the sole method in which we can rebel against this cruel world! - The message seems to be a rebellion rather than raw fearlessness in the face of indomitable foes.
    My soldiers, rage!
    My soldiers, scream!
    My soldiers, fight!
These three lines should be reversed, because rage is the stronger verb out of the three. Also, fight is a little on the nose, whereas push forward implies fighting as well as struggle.

    • @許為傑-p7z
      @許為傑-p7z 2 года назад +41

I have an explanation for the original Japanese script.
"The ones who remember them...are us, the living!"
The sub might not be able to express the exact nuance, but what he is saying is that the fallen have meaning in their lives (or you can say deaths I suppose) is because they (Erwin and co.) are here living to remember them and give them meaning, emphasizing not the remember part, but rather that they are LIVING.
"We die trusting the living who follow to find meaning in our lives!"
The translation is a bit off here. The actual line is closer to like "We die and entrust the meaning of our lives to the living!"
And you need to include the conversation before this speech to get the whole picture. Prior to this speech, Floch asked if their deaths are going to be meaningless, and Erwin replied yes. And then came this speech, stating that death is meaningless to those that fall, but the meaning of their "lives"(or again, deaths) are given by those that live on. So too will they fall, but what their deaths bring is entrusted to the LIVING.
So this brings the last line, "That is the sole method in which we can rebel against this cruel world!"
The line feels kind of out of place here I admit, but I think Erwin is stating that in order to go forward in this cruel world, there must be people continuingly sacrificing their lives. So he is not persuading the rookies to be fearless (since that is utterly impossible and not his point), but to motivate them to willingly sacrifice their lives and entrust the future to the LIVING.
So the whole point of this speech is to emphasize that they are going to fall, and there will be people LIVING ON to accomplish what they weren't able to.
      "My soldiers, rage!"
      "My soldiers, scream!"
      "My soldiers, fight!"
The last one is fight is to be consistent with Eren's words (by the author), that you must fight to live.
So that makes it the most important of the three (and the only one), and that's why it's last. I guess you can say this phrase is meant for the readers, not the soldiers.

We gotta remember as people who do not understand Japanese we only have the Japanese actors' voices and the subtitles to convey what is happening. Naturally our brains fill in the gaps, making us view the Japanese dub wayyyyy differently than a Japanese fluent person would. In English there is no ambiguity or gaps to be filled in by our subconscious because we already understand everything that is being said so our brains don't add anything and there's no creative/imagination leeway in the brain.
Not saying that one is better, just talking about the different perceptions and interpretations based on your understanding of the languages involved in this specific work of art.

    • @Iconic_Scarab
      @Iconic_Scarab 2 года назад +3

True which is imo an advantage for sub. There is much greater opportunity for scrutiny and cringe when hearing your native tongue coupled with the limitations placed on making a translation that adequately conveys the message and lands correctly while still matching the mouth movements and inevitably results in what is usually lesser results. On the other hand with sub you tend to get better translations (that doesn't even strictly refer to translation accuracy alone but also just better wording in general) allowing you to receive the message intellectually while picking up on the feeling and emotion conveyed in the voice acting separately which imo tends to result in a deeper impact. This is, as you point out, further assisted by how much you can allow your thoughts, memories, and connections to the story/characters/etc. to fill in bridging the gaps and drawing yourself deeper into the experience whereas I feel that while watching dub the additional depth of scrutiny toward what you are hearing stunts that process of being drawn in. For example many times during an emotional outburst from a character you might be more likely to be amused by it hearing it in your native tongue or even wanting to imitate it thereby breaking the immersion. I feel this is evident in reaction channels that opt to watch dub.

The way Erwin ends with “tatake” in the Japanese dub makes it harmonize more with Eren in season 4, Which is cool.
However, I think that in the moment, it flows better and is more poignant to end with “my soldiers rage” in the English dub. The moment is just way more hype and is great as a stand-alone scene. The “pushing forward” harmonizes with Eren as well but it’s not as poignant as the Japanese version.
I think the dub takes the W in this scene for a lot of reasons. Dub Erwin is just, an exceptional voice acting job. Above and beyond, really. It really makes you forget that this same voice actor plays a high schooler in another shounen.

I honestly like both. I been watching AoT in japanese when it was first released and then I just went back over it English and I think they are both great. Commander Erwin especially.
