A few weeks ago during band practice, my mate Stephen came across a unique bass technique on a RUclips video using a Helix device. He was raving about how the device achieved an outstanding bass tone. While I caught glimpses of this video, I didn't pay much attention to the details or the creator. Nevertheless, the technique piqued my interest.
Essentially, this method replicates what I'd typically do in post-production. It involves a specific form of compression, parallel compression, using certain plugins to independently process different elements of my overall bass tone. Commonly, musicians might use duplicate bass tracks and treat each differently. For instance, one might be heavily processed and stripped of its low end, and the other could have the high end rolled off. The Helix device, however, allows for this kind of processing internally.
With this technique, I split my signal inside the Helix and crafted a preset, or patch. I then plugged in my bass to demonstrate how this works. While my bass tones often receive mixed reviews, with some finding them thin, I genuinely believe they sound solid. Using HX Edit, I displayed how the high end and low end of the bass tone are separated and processed, providing a satisfying blend of frequencies. By implementing a specific compression ratio and processing through a range of plugins, I was able to sculpt a balanced, gnarly bass tone that works well in a mix context.
This bass tone may not work for every musician or every genre, but for me and my style of music, it's spot on. It provides the gritty, edgy tone I crave, with a lot of the sound processing happening directly inside the Helix. Over time, I've shifted more towards capturing the right tone directly from the Helix, rather than extensive post-production tweaking. This saves me time and lets me focus more on the music. In future, I'll probably use this bass tone more frequently, and I'll even provide a link for my subscribers to download and experiment with this preset. It's always great to share what I've learned and discovered, even if it doesn't fit everyone's taste. It's all part of the fun and creative process of making music.

This is easily the best bass preset I've come across. As someone who owns and uses Parallax and got a HX Stomp for live use I've struggled to get similar sounding tone until I came across this video.
If anyone at Line6 sees this comment - this should be a default preset!

    That is amazing.
I watched Billy Sheehan talking about splitting a clean and effected bass sounds together before, but watching this video was mind blowing because I thought you had to mix the standard and effected sounds together out of two different amp and cabinets..?
I don't know much about how to set up things like that up but this video blew my mind, wish I could do the same with my Boss GT-1B and other software.

Nice one. I run a similar patch, although sometimes I'll also chuck a bass amp on the low end path. Gives me a bit more control over the low end itself and takes some of that slightly separated DI sound out a bit more. Just got to adjust the levels down and blend it in a bit more.

That low end isn't thin. It's actually incredible in my opinion. It's thigh and powerful. For the Dirty path, there is some kind of noise in the background that sound like a radio that is not tuned to a channel and without a mix or not in a band situation, annoy me a little bit, but at the same time, the front end of the that dirty path sound really really killer.

I am more of a RnB, Country and POP player, But I do all sorts of sessions and This may work for a Metal session upcoming.
PS Your bass is FINE. I have Old Vintage Fenders and a dozen $$$$$$$$ Boutique fender clones , Foderas etc.. blah blah.. One of my best sounding basses was used on an international POP tour stadiums, arenas and a few TV shows. I made it from Fender style parts...It toured the world with me 5 continents over years . Cost me maybe $350 in parts..
I recently played one of the news Squire P basses . Its Under $300.. A little setup, Nut files, neck tweak I would play it on any gig and it would sound great. No ONe would know..
Save you money. You dont need to buy another bass.

I assume this preset will work with HXStomp? I don't see too many blocks for HX.
Back when I ran my bigger pedalboard, I could get almost this tone with my Dingwall Combustion using an SVT amp preset on my Zoom MS60B --> Daring Audio Edge Activator HD --> a Tone Hammer DI with AGS circuit engaged. Mine had a bit more clank and a little less distortion.
Now, I just have a small board with a Cali 76CB, HX Stomp, and Tone Hammer DI.

thanks for this - I copied it exactly how you had it, but it sounded like ass (using a Spector euro 5 LX) - changed the amp to the SVT 4 pro, and tweaked the obsidian a bit, and it sounded a lot better (closer to your sound but not as distorted)
I heard a podcast with Keith Merrow a while ago saying the same thing about using a guitar amp for the highs, that trick can work pretty well if done correctly
    thanks again
