A few weeks ago during band practice, my mate Stephen came across a unique bass technique on a RUclips video using a Helix device. He was raving about how the device achieved an outstanding bass tone. While I caught glimpses of this video, I didn't pay much attention to the details or the creator. Nevertheless, the technique piqued my interest.
Essentially, this method replicates what I'd typically do in post-production. It involves a specific form of compression, parallel compression, using certain plugins to independently process different elements of my overall bass tone. Commonly, musicians might use duplicate bass tracks and treat each differently. For instance, one might be heavily processed and stripped of its low end, and the other could have the high end rolled off. The Helix device, however, allows for this kind of processing internally.
With this technique, I split my signal inside the Helix and crafted a preset, or patch. I then plugged in my bass to demonstrate how this works. While my bass tones often receive mixed reviews, with some finding them thin, I genuinely believe they sound solid. Using HX Edit, I displayed how the high end and low end of the bass tone are separated and processed, providing a satisfying blend of frequencies. By implementing a specific compression ratio and processing through a range of plugins, I was able to sculpt a balanced, gnarly bass tone that works well in a mix context.
This bass tone may not work for every musician or every genre, but for me and my style of music, it's spot on. It provides the gritty, edgy tone I crave, with a lot of the sound processing happening directly inside the Helix. Over time, I've shifted more towards capturing the right tone directly from the Helix, rather than extensive post-production tweaking. This saves me time and lets me focus more on the music. In future, I'll probably use this bass tone more frequently, and I'll even provide a link for my subscribers to download and experiment with this preset. It's always great to share what I've learned and discovered, even if it doesn't fit everyone's taste. It's all part of the fun and creative process of making music.

🤣🤣🤣🤣
TRIED! Thanks!
Your sense of humor always gets me.
Great way of simplifying the bass to one track, I feel dumb not having considered that before.
Hell yeah , always good to see ya on the ytube, Cheers BC
This is easily the best bass preset I've come across. As someone who owns and uses Parallax and got a HX Stomp for live use I've struggled to get similar sounding tone until I came across this video.
If anyone at Line6 sees this comment - this should be a default preset!
Thanks Nick! Really helped lay a good foundation for my own. The tone you achieved is definitely gnarly AF!
Great video Nick! I've been wanting to do this inside of Helix Native but I just didn't know how to do it. Now I know. It's a subjective thing but I really like the tone you dialed in in this video.
Gnarly tone, great walkthrough of your choices. I’m a fellow helix user but haven’t played around with bass tones yet, this is a great resource, thank you 🤘
Killer tone my friend! You are a human being everyone should be a little bit more. Thanks for everything!
I used this tone for a show tonight and it was awesome. Thank you!
That is amazing.
I watched Billy Sheehan talking about splitting a clean and effected bass sounds together before, but watching this video was mind blowing because I thought you had to mix the standard and effected sounds together out of two different amp and cabinets..?
I don't know much about how to set up things like that up but this video blew my mind, wish I could do the same with my Boss GT-1B and other software.
Dude I just tried this with the stock "DI" setting in EZ Bass and it's F'n rad 🤘Sounds much better than anything I was getting from the plugin itself even with additional post processing.
Just purchased it, and really like how dynamic is it and at the same time pushes you to carve out that gnarlyness from base. Tried it on squier precission and gl l-2500, and humbuckers on gl gives me a propper results! Anyway thnx for awesome preset!
Stoked it's working for you. Thanks for the support!
Nice one. I run a similar patch, although sometimes I'll also chuck a bass amp on the low end path. Gives me a bit more control over the low end itself and takes some of that slightly separated DI sound out a bit more. Just got to adjust the levels down and blend it in a bit more.
Title of the video had me crackin up... 😂
Your videos always have me laughing dude
Good stuff as always man.. I'm going to try out the Re-Amping technique I learned from watching your reamp video last night. Thanks for the knowledge Helix master!! 🔥
Man, life is hard… you gotta poke fun of it all. I love trying to make folks laugh. Thanks for being here
@@NickHillMakesMusic For sure bro, it's the spice of life. I learned the re amping technique from your video last night and applied that technique on a song I had tracked to help not only add a little gas and ass to my already existing guitar tracks. But also used this bass preset from this video to help make that bass track a fat daddy. Man it worked wonders.. Can't thank you enough for the tricks you've taught me with my HX Stomp XL. 🙏
Your honest and raw unfiltered way of presenting this information is awesome. It's both helpful and entertaining! It's almost like you don't want to be bothered doing it, but yet you are still going through with it. The sarcasm! Well done... well done! Haha. Good stuff! Thanks!
Thanks man. I appreciate you seeing it as it is. I love being helpful but sort of strongly dislike RUclips. I want to help, but I dislike the hate, tribalist mentality, and gatekeepers. I just wanna make stuff that makes folks chuckle and helps them along their musical journey. That’s it man. Thanks for being here
@@NickHillMakesMusic I could see that, and I feel the same way about YT and other social media sites. I hate so many aspects of it, but I also love so many aspects of it. I guess it’s pretty much just like anything else, it has its upsides and downsides. Love the way you deal with it though. 🙏🏼
i, for one, believe it's a nice bass tone
That low end isn't thin. It's actually incredible in my opinion. It's thigh and powerful. For the Dirty path, there is some kind of noise in the background that sound like a radio that is not tuned to a channel and without a mix or not in a band situation, annoy me a little bit, but at the same time, the front end of the that dirty path sound really really killer.
Great video Nick. Surprisingly and by a complete different approach, you've managed to get the same EQ curve and tone as Nolly Getgood. Something quite impressive and using only one plug-in. Incredible bass tone.
I'd like to try to replicate this workflow outside Helix and try to pull It out on only one track too though It might be tricky.
That’s amazing! What strings, tuning and pick ups are you using(bridge or neck)?
Idk why but this is like asmr for me in a good way
This guy make my first two years with the helix epic
This is video is the reason I'm buying a Helix right now. Haha
Love the tone.
But I hate noise gates - let it rage!
Great content man.
Cheers
I use a HX Stomp.. This works great for me..
I am more of a RnB, Country and POP player, But I do all sorts of sessions and This may work for a Metal session upcoming.
PS Your bass is FINE. I have Old Vintage Fenders and a dozen $$$$$$$$ Boutique fender clones , Foderas etc.. blah blah.. One of my best sounding basses was used on an international POP tour stadiums, arenas and a few TV shows. I made it from Fender style parts...It toured the world with me 5 continents over years . Cost me maybe $350 in parts..
I recently played one of the news Squire P basses . Its Under $300.. A little setup, Nut files, neck tweak I would play it on any gig and it would sound great. No ONe would know..
Save you money. You dont need to buy another bass.
Love your video! It's just a bit of a pity there is no example in which you can hear the how the final basssound sits / behaves in in a full mix of a song... maybe in an next video or as a kind of retrospective?
Listen to any of my music… this type of bass tone is how I’ve always done bass tones aside from doing the compression in the DAW previously to this (which I still do).
I wonder if an extended range guitar patch would work similarly. Having the low end sent to a tighter path for chunk and the highs sent to a path for leads…
I assume this preset will work with HXStomp? I don't see too many blocks for HX.
Back when I ran my bigger pedalboard, I could get almost this tone with my Dingwall Combustion using an SVT amp preset on my Zoom MS60B --> Daring Audio Edge Activator HD --> a Tone Hammer DI with AGS circuit engaged. Mine had a bit more clank and a little less distortion.
Now, I just have a small board with a Cali 76CB, HX Stomp, and Tone Hammer DI.
How you would connect/set the helix to PA and at the same time to real amp?
Sounds wild, seems like it could also work on a stomp too, if not with some minor tweaking
Can confirm - I do a very similar setup on my Stomp. I also like adding some chorus on the high path which helps it stand out in the mix
thanks for this - I copied it exactly how you had it, but it sounded like ass (using a Spector euro 5 LX) - changed the amp to the SVT 4 pro, and tweaked the obsidian a bit, and it sounded a lot better (closer to your sound but not as distorted)
I heard a podcast with Keith Merrow a while ago saying the same thing about using a guitar amp for the highs, that trick can work pretty well if done correctly
thanks again
If you get injured making a video, do you qualify for a workplace injury case? Who do you sue? YT? 😀 Thanks for this video, now that I am back on HX Stomp been trying to get a bass tone like this. This patch is like all the magic goodies rolled into one! It’s like all the tricks in one patch, grabbed it off your site and bought you a beer. Thanks!!
Love your patches Nick! Im having a hard time with this bass preset. For some reason Im not getting any audio out. I believe it's the cab section because if I turn it off or replace it I still get output. Any ideas? Im using an hx stomp on a m1 MacBook Air with helix edit
Are you up to date firmware wise? Also, like I mentioned in the video, you may need to get rid of some blocks (I have two noise gates) to free up space for the Stomp
@@NickHillMakesMusic I am indeed up to date, and Ive tried removing like everything but the amp and the cab, and still no sound. So I dont think it's a DSP issue. Very odd!
Yeah; that’s bizarre. I’m sorry man. Copy the settings. I walk through them all
Sounds like Dug's tone from King's X.
KILLER TONE!!!!!!
Hello and greetings from Germany, I have no sound on my stomp, it seems to be the cab, when I switch the cab off there is sound, does anyone have an idea
I did the last uodate again, now it works
Dug Pinnick tone. Rock it.
I cant get this preset to copy to the stomp to save my life. Haha
Is your stomp updated? Haven't had anyone else have an issue
@@NickHillMakesMusic should be running the 3.70 ATM. "Unable to import presets in the set error code 8309" Will double check tomorrow.
@@NickHillMakesMusic
Fixed! Thanks for such a nasty present!
What was the issue in case anyone else runs into it?
Very cool man thanks for sharing 🤘
🎉
If it was opposite day...
I refuse to believe Steve can read.
I still don’t have proof
I can hear lots of digital artefacts, almost like a low bit rate tone from an old video game.
Perfect, I love old Video Games
@@NickHillMakesMusic Yeh, im not saying its a bad tone… even ehx makes the bitcrusher pedal to emulate those sounds for those who like it
There are none but nice try. Perhaps it’s your listening environment or device
@@GearStuffandThings It is digital, so I am hearing exactly what it is. Also I love how you just assume my comment was negative, when I said I like it sounding lo-fi… and yes I heard it perfectly through high end speakers, and I own many amps and can tell tell the difference between each. Its called developing a broad appreciation.
@@personalfreedom2700 it’s been a lot of fun Mr.Freedom
i can get a great bass tone direct with a cheap compressor pedal.
Cool
Just use metrics and it's easy split rather than imperials which is invented by a drunken lobster and doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Very dUg Pinnick, and that gate really punches the attack nicely. Just bought it. Can’t wait to fire it up. 💥🫵💥
