The principle that made the blind guy lose was a simple one. It's the same in pocker. You can go a few steps by sticking to simple logic. Like, only betting in hands that have higher ods of winning and not bother with mind games and bluffs. But if you play like that the opponent can easily read you and play you like a toy. That's what happened to the blind guy. He went very far by doing things completely reasonably but Akagi just read him completely and destroyed him as a result.
Man... I remember watching akagi and thinking I was following along, but looking at this scene having never played mahjong I have no idea what the hell they're saying
Basically, Ichikawa needs to discard that North Wind tile to maintain his Tempai, but he knows that Akagi is probably waiting on it. He logically deduces that even if he manages to deal into Akagi's North Wind triplet, it won't mean anything if he can't complete the rest of his hand. The problem is, he cheated earlier when they were building the walls and he knows that the 3 of Bamboo is the next tile in the dead wall, which is a dangerous tile, and if Akagi DOES call Kan on the North Wind he will get it added to his hand and potentially win in an upset with a rare yaku called Rishan Kaihou. Ichikawa plays the North Wind, and Akagi calls Kan as expected, so he tries to hide one of his Red Dragon tiles in his hand and swap out the 3 of Bamboo with sleight of hand for that instead, preventing the possibility of him winning off of the dead wall draw (since two other Red Dragons are in his hand, he will know they are safe). Akagi stops him from doing that, so as to prevent getting caught cheating, he swaps the next dora indicator with the Red Dragon instead. Ichikawa saw that Akagi had a White Dragon in his discards, so even if his pair is White Dragons, it won't be enough to get his hand score to Mangan. Then he realizes that the next dora tile indicator would have been West Wind, so if he hadn't swapped out that tile (albeit unintentionally) the North Wind would become the new dora and Akagi's had would have been huge. The game ends when Ichikawa plays the West Wind he stole from the dead wall that he then had to get rid of in his hand, and that completed Akagi's pair, a single wait on the West Wind. So if Ichikawa had not cheated, Akagi's hand would have been completely worthless, but he turned it into a winning hand. Akagi knew Ichikawa was cheating and exploited his logical playstyle, setting a trap that involved waiting on tiles that Ichikawa thinks are safe and making discards that hint at Akagi having a different hand composition so that he swaps out "dangerous" tiles for "safe" ones and plays those instead, which he can use to win.
@@AntiTheory You got almost all of it right, except Akagi actually won off of the dead wall draw thanks to the Kan (he needed the three of bamboo to win). Not the west wind discard that you think happened. He then got Rishan Kaihou (win instantly after calling a Kan) which is 1 Yaku, a Shanshoku doujin (three identical triplets from one suit each) which is another Yaku. Those two alone were 2 Han. Because he open Kan'd the North winds, it's worth at least 16 Fu on top of the 20 Fu he gets for winning. That gets rounded up to 40 Fu. If he happened to get 4 Han total at this point then further calculations are not necessary as that is a Mangan. He can only get that 2 extra Han from 2 dora tiles. Unfortunately for Ichikawa, he thought Akagi had no white dragons because Akagi discarded a white, believing it was safe. So the red dragon being the 2nd dora indicator would stop Akagi scoring a Mangan if that's the case as there was no reason for Akagi to have white dragons if he discarded one. However, Akagi actually did have a pair of white dragons (he had three and intentionally discarded one to make Ichikawa think he didn't have any), the new dora turning them into two dora tiles, giving Akagi the 4 Han total with the 40 Fu to give that Mangan hand. Akagi tricked Ichikawa into swapping out the next dora tile to ensure that the two white dragons he had hidden would become dora tiles.
