Hubert Selby Jr. was one of the most brilliant and underrated writers of the 20th century...A true artistic genius for those readers with enough guts and intelligence to explore the dark side of human existence. "Requiem For A Dream" and "Last Exit To Brooklyn" should be taught in every college literature course in the US.

Do you know the 2nd film he's talking about, that was made those two years?

Loved this writer for years, and now I've heard that in person he was very kind and genuine. Just a great author who is vastly underrated. In a writing course at my college the professor asked every student what author they find the most inspiring, I said that Hubert Selby Jr. was my favorite and the professor had no idea who he is, which was really surprising to me because his writing style is groundbreaking.

I would be so proud if I wrote the book that the movie was based off of. One of the best movies of all time and you get to say it wouldn't exist if it wasn't for you and you would be right!

I agree "Requiem..." IS a great film. What is even more impressive is the fact that the book is even better!!! Just the fact that Selby and Aronofsky were able to craft a screenplay which did the book justice is astonishing.

What an inspiring, and thoughtful interview, he put a spotlight on parts of society, that get cast aside, and he did it with a dignity and respect for the characters, and his overall outlook on life is a force to be reckoned with

They said that the book came out in 1978, so it's more like 44 years later. I read a little bit of it back in 2006, ironically at the bookstore right after I shot up for the first time ever. I've been clean for over four years now.

I remember reading it. The way Selby doesn't put any dialog in quotations is both brilliant and menacing because you feel your right there in the middle of the exchange between all the characters.
I hope you read it and liked it.

The most underrated writer of all time , had an extraordinary talent which is to create the most disturbing and scary stories out of everyday social life which is the real horror.

Most powerful writing advice I've ever heard. Makes me realise we can do anything with this stuff, Hubert Selby Jr only shows off a handful of the colors in the box and said to the rest of us- "Here you go, have fun,"

Genius of a man the lack of face to face communication is dwilding faster by the day and he knew it right around the start of the internet. These chats are a great example. Empathy turns to entropy.
