Well done for having gone to the trouble to assemble all the materials for this lesson, which I am sure will remain bright in the memories of many of the kids participating. Excellent review of a great machine, too. Hope you do manage to film some others. Happy holidays!

I hope it's memorable! I had fun sharing them. It looks like weather might be a problem tomorrow, so I will have an extra day to film. I want to film the Royal KMG for sure, if I can figure out how to light it. I also want to film my own two Underwood machines, though I can do that when I choose.

I remember we had typing lessons on type writers when I was in secondary school. As you said, 30 children all hammering the keys did make a lot of noise

I'll bet they did! One typewriter sounds nice. A roomful, I suspect not.

That looks exactly like the type writer that my mum had and I used to play with as a child

I have no idea if they were common or not. But they were really nice to use!

Great job! It’s fun to see young people discover these machines for the first time. Looking forward to more reviews.

Surprised to have you here! Yes, it was a lot of fun. For privacy reasons, I couldn't do video, but every age group enjoyed these machines from fourth grade through seniors.

I was at the Phoenix Type-In, so I appeared in Joe’s video. I’m the short guy with the Type Pals shirt. You might be surprised how many people will come out if you decide to have a Type-In. Not at all surprised you love the Hermes 3000. There’s a reason they’re the most popular typewriter.

Very cool! I'll have to rewatch that!
I hope I am surprised. This is an extremely rural area, especially compared to Phoenix. To give you an idea, my school district is several hundred square miles larger than the state of Rhode Island, and we have a K-12 enrollment of about 475 students.
Most of my donors were from Dickinson. But I'm not sure how many would actually travel the 90 miles to my rural town.
And, yes, I'll be keeping my eye on eBay and Etsy for a Hermes 3000 at a good price.

I returned to the endless pleasures of owning and using typewriters again, (after a gap of at least twenty years) mainly thanks to watching you, AdventureDenali show and talk about them…also Tom Hanks famously wax lyrical about typewriters.
I currently own four portable, manual typewriters at home. The 1959 Remington Quiet-Riter Eleven (with a lovely dark green
    keyboard)
1956 Underwood Quiet Tab Deluxe (white color)
    1966 Olympia SM9 (white color)
And a fantastic, maroon colored Adler machine of which I can’t remember the full model number/description right now. But it’s a terrific piece.
I bought all my typewriters at premium prices, fully cleaned, restored, ready to use.
Your Hermes 3000 (circa 1962) is a superb machine. The reviews of it are invariably glowing. Coveted, but not an easy machine to find and always steeply priced. I remember seeing one in great condition going for nearly $800. I somehow chose to buy another Aurora 88 instead. 🙂

I'm at three machines, and only two work. But I may have gotten a big clue how to fix the one that doesn't work. I'll try it out tomorrow when I have better light.
I'm glad to hear you're preserving these machines and supporting the people who are experts at repairing them.
I think I could be talked into paying premium prices for a Hermes 3000 or a Royal KMG.

Many typewriters didn't come with a 1 key. But they had fraction keys and a cent key.
It was fun, but now I'm dreading returning all the machines!

@@WaskiSquirrel By the time I wrote a mathematics thesis, people were typing mathematics on IBM Selectrics with multiple type balls -- several extra for various symbols. If you look at Math typing , however in the early 20 th century, many formulas were added (in ink) by hand.

I just saw it! You're right. The exclamation point is there. I hadn't seen it before. That's the trouble with a machine I don't own: I don't have enough experience with it!

I have a 1965 3000 and a 1969 rocket. I absolutely love both of them, I use a 1958 olympia sm2 with a QWERTZ keyboard most of the time l, but you absolutely cannot beat a Hermes for their reliability.

Hermes is wonderful! Fun coda to this video: I now own this typewriter. It's mostly emotional that I haven't pulled out the green ribbon.

I found a Hermes 3000 in a local antique shop and paid about $200 for it after taxes. It doesn't have the case, and the margin ribbon functionality is not working, but after cleaning, it's very functional. It took me a couple of weeks to realize it does, in fact, have an exclamation point on the right side of the keyboard. I enjoy it, but I think I'd be just as happy with a nice Smith Corona.

That's a good price for that machine, especially if it doesn't include shipping!
There are some functions it's easy enough to live without. Others are deal breakers.

That's a Deluxe Hermes 3000, and an earlier model late 50's as it's cover grabs two pins on the inside of the keyboard, wheres later models have the square openings on the bumper outsides of the spacebar.
That one has a ruler going up to 120 which means its a 13 or 13 ½ print which is VERY small.
A Hermes 3000 that goes up to 90 is a 10 and a bit easier on the eyes.
The ribbon switch isnt so you can type both red and black at the same time, that's silly and remember its Swiss built and there is no time for jokes lol no, its for solid ribbons, once they start to go faint, you can switch that so the typewriter will use the middle of the ribbon where it will still have ink. Think of it as a save you money switch so you can get the most use out of the ribbon.
Just like when my black dried up, Ill switch it to red and finish the ribbon out on red which is odd I never thought to do that so I feel bad I tossed two spools ago just because black was done. Live and learn right.
Teach them how to do a check that was fun with my 15 yo who didn't know as its not taugh anymore.
    Anyway,
    Still a beautiful machine.
The shiny handle buckels is the give away that it's a deluxe.
    PS
There is an exclamation mark on there, its to your far right on the ¾ key second row.
Fune fact on the QWERTY keyboard that row can spell TYPEWRITER. that was done on purpose, so when sales men were selling them in the beginning of the Typewriters life, they used that TYPEWRITER trick to demonstrate how easy it is to use them. Thanks to sales tactics we got the QWERTY keyboard.

Thank you for the added information. I don't know much about this model except that I liked the one I borrowed very much, and I would like to own one of my own. Interesting about the typeface: I didn't realize it was smaller than Elite. I typically like Elite. Pica is okay, but a little large for my tastes.
I did find the ! after several people commented. Again, it's not my typewriter, so I'm not that familiar with it.
I'm going to push back a little on the black and red. I agree that the middle setting may be used for getting more out of the ribbon. And I don't buy bicolor ribbons for my machines because I use the full ribbon exactly as you describe. This would give a third part of the ribbon to use, for those who aren't using bicolor ribbons.
My mother used to use the red when she worked for a utility company. They did typed ledgers of the type you and I would now whip out on a spreadsheet. Red was used to indicate loss. Of course, I don't think ledger paper would have fit in this Hermes.

Typewriters are awfully satisfying to use! But, they sure take up a lot more space than pens... My entire collection of pens takes up about as much volume as one of my four typewriters!
You have inspired me to get out one of them for my next letter :)
    cheers!

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  9 месяцев назад

I totally agree! I have three typewriters, and am in lust with the idea with two more. And they take up a lot of space, especially in a small house like mine. I'd like one of these Hermes 3000s for my own along with a Royal KMG. But I love typing with them. Having the loan of this wealth of typewriters made me fall in love with the whole idea of more machines. I'll definitely have to pace myself.

  • @tsherbs1309

Way cool machine. Never tried one, but I'd love to (some day). The machine isn't yours, so you can't work on it, but denatured alcohol works great in the segment to clean out gunk that has collected in the segment slots. No oil should be used in the segment.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  9 месяцев назад +1

Good point about the oil. It is only for very limited places.
And you're right: there are things I want to fix, but won't, without permission. The only thing I've felt willing to do on any of the machines is to replace a ribbon in one case, or install it correctly in another case. And I cleaned the exteriors of the machines with Simple Green both before and after.
