NW Arkansas native here, FYI that google pronunciation wasn't really correct anyway. It's WAH-shuh-tah, first syllable sounds like 'washing machine', second syllable sounds like you were saying a curse word but stopped yourself at the last moment, third syllable sounds like 'tawny' or 'Tonga'. Stress goes on the first syllable. You said it basically right at 18:07. Lots of names in this region are native names, filtered through French explorers, before being written in English.
Locals call the stickbugs a 'walkingstick'. Yes, they are very common at certain times of the year.

401K, a mountain bike and a season pass to Killington more. I did the weekend thing for decades and now retired I am doing weeks on the trail. Fortunately my body is still good and the gear is super light. When I was young I did take some summers off to go West and backpack but mostly for rock climbing. After doing that for a few years and essentially having nothing but a beat up car, some climbing gear I went back to work full time. Living on the trail is doable but after a while it grows old. Thru hiking is definitely a great way to lose weight, LOL. I went from 205 to around 170 on my AT thru hike. It's rough on the ol' body!

I did not realize you did the Ouachita Trail!! I did it with my son and a friend from the army back in 2021. After watching Jeff Garmeyer do it with his girlfriend. So cool! The best maintained Trail with the best shelters I've ever seen. You pronounced it right too and I'm sure you learned it from the locals! Did you stop at the trail Angel's diner in the middle of it? I can't remember the ladies name that owned it, but she was wonderful. Wash i tah!

I hope you manage to stop beating yourself up half sarcastically about the PCT. Wildfires are one of the scariest natural disasters there are. I moved to CA from the Midwest and nothing out there compared to the destruction and fear that comes with wildfires. It's not just a physical danger, it can also affect your mental health. You and flossy did a fantastic job tackling the PCT and you should be damn proud of how much you got through, especially considering your lack of experience hiking in the type of heat you get out here.

I've been living out of my backpack for about 2 years, hitchiking and walking around America, and hammocks are the best way to go. Sneak in the woods, find two trees, boom. Add a tarp for rain and you're sleeping like a doctor.

3/4 under quilt is rough in cold temps. I used a ccf pad and an inflatable klymit sit pad under my feet. + thick wool socks. And that still generally sucks. Lol I just ended up buying a full length to be more comfortable and it saves on weight. 20 degree yeti to 20 degree heat incubator

5:06 I find it extraordinary that, after so many through hikes that 22 degrees F is the coldest night you’ve spent on the trail. Doesn’t it get colder in The High Sierras on the PCT?
