    Sniff mentions Simon Pegg - The Ampera version of this features fairly prominently in "The World's End", the third of the Pegg/Frost/Edgar Wright "Cornetto trilogy" films. It's on a couple of billboards in the background, then there's several in a car park in Newton Haven.

  • @Parax77

    You can put the Ampera/volt into reverse while still going forward (EV drivetrain reverses motor only).. then pressing the accelerator peddle give a really weird slingshot effect as it flips direction!
    Mountain mode is not low gearing, it is a higher EV reserve, so the generator starts sooner, and it'll have more power in reserve for the steep hills...

    Ha ha I bought a Holden badged Volt in NZ. Looks the same just different badges and logos. I then spent twelve months before being able to sell the MK1 Insight it replaced. In my case I needed something I could transport both elderly parents in! Mountain mode allows you to charge the battery up before you get to a long climb from the petrol engine as a opposed to hold which only maintains the charge left in the battery when you swap modes. Mines a 2013 with all the toys in diamond white metalic - looks more like pearl to me :-). Looks like the same interior. Work and back every day no petrol used. Great car for stress free daily commute.

    Of all the hybrids the Volt is my favorite even though I have never driven one, Matt Farah owns one in LA and gave it the best explanation and review. Matt also has reviewed the Cadillac version which he rates very high except the price. It is a shame that it is no more because that type of hybrid is becoming more relevant year by year.

    I looked at the Volt, but the fact that it's strictly a 4 seater killed it for my family of 5, so I got the e-Golf (which I know Johnny has as well), had that for 4 years and then traded way up for the Model 3... happy now :) The battery layout in the Volt is what ruined the interior, making it feel cramped inside.

  • @evtrekker1317
    @evtrekker1317 5 лет назад +1

    Oh Johnny!
    You should read your manual our look it up on your cars screen. Mountain mode uses the generator to maintain about a half battery for mountain roads. If you have less the a half charge or even an empty battery it will charge the up to half.
    The Volt/Ampera only have one gear like the Leaf.
    Shift to L for extra regen.
    Next time your are in the US test drive the gen 2.

    In principal, I really like the idea of Hybrid and EV. but, only if you live in relatively built up areas. I live in rural Scotland, drive a 90 mile round trip commute and another 20-40 miles per day for work. There are a few charging stations appearing but not that many.

    Hello,
    I'm something similar, had a insight -which was a great car (not much sound deadening and the gearing was tall, but the good vibes you got when getting good economy made it was hard to beat. But just as with you I need 4 seats now :-( and would never consider a insight mk2). I also prefer the volt to amperea, some say the volt is a little softer suspension, but I doubt there is a difference? To get epic life out of the car they say to use it is hybid mode only, then being somewhat over engineered will do 250,000 miles and the battery will still be good? The mountain mode can be used as a charge mode too?

    I've always had a geeky love affair with the Volt. I was working for a Chevrolet dealer here in the States when they first came out and the sales manager was nice enough to let me take the demo out for a spin after I was done for the day. It was rush hour and since it was winter time it was already dark so I made a beeline for a quiet back street where I could loop around and come back to the dealer. It was pouring down rain and mid-block I suddenly saw some idiot on a bicycle wearing all black stopped in the middle of my lane trying to turn left onto the f**king sidewalk! There was a line of cars coming the opposite way and cars parked on the right so I just booted the brake pedal harder than I ever have in my entire life. The ABS did its dance and the nose of that Volt stopped not two feet from the rear tire of that moron who obliviously made his turn, unaware of how close he came to becoming a new Chevy hood ornament. It was only as he turned that I saw he did have a rear light...mounted on his bag....POINTING AT THE GROUND. I was so shaken by the whole thing that I had to pull over and get my heart rate down.

    I'd love an electric car for that silent driving...bliss.
    Just think how very different driving, towns and cities, will be in 10-20 years time, when EVs will be the majority of vehicles?? How silent will towns and cities be?! Imagine central London when the soundtrack will be EV hum, not revving and diesels..? Maybe Smith and Llewellyn's Fully Charged has the resource to do a video of a city streets, redubbed with the EV sounds of the future..?

    The Mitsubishi Outlander Phev is a range-extender, no?

    • @Neojhun
      @Neojhun 5 лет назад

      No majority of it's range and power comes from Petrol Engine. Thus its a Mild Plug In. FYI It only has 12kwh to move a massive car.

    • @Nurton83
      @Nurton83 5 лет назад

      @@Neojhun The Outlander is almost the same as the Volt in terms of functionality but you only get between 35-50km EV range due to smaller battery. Still fine for people who have a commute of around that distance return. I put 25 litres in mine every 1500km on average. Benefit of Outlander is larger load capacity, Japanese reliability and maybe a lower price and wider availability.

    • @Neojhun
      @Neojhun 5 лет назад

      @@Nurton83 Nope it's an INVERSE of the Volt. First you need to understand the details of Parallel Hybrids. The Volt in rare cases can apply Wheel Torque from the Combustion Engine but majority of its life it's only a mechanically disconnected Series Hybrid. Outlander soon drain in a road trip thus they had to engineer a mechanical system where Combustion Engine spinning the wheels for majority of a Road Trip. The mechanical toughness and operations are vastly different. The Volt's Engine mechanical connection to wheels is much weaker.

    • @Nurton83
      @Nurton83 5 лет назад

      @@Neojhun I meant functionality from a user point of view is almost the same except for the lower EV only range. The mechanical direct drive from ICE above 60km/h would seem like most efficient solution to me as converting ICE to electricity and then immediately back to mechanical energy has to have additional losses. However, it does make under the bonnet of my Outlander very complex and maybe not something I want to be owning when its 10 years old, but I'm sure I'll buy a full EV by then. In the meantime the Outlander was 2 years old when I bought it for 20k pounds with only 15,000 km on clock, has adaptive cruise control and enough space for 2 of us to camp in back of it so does me nicely.

    • @Nurton83
      @Nurton83 5 лет назад

      @@Neojhun PS I never use the ICE at all until battery is depleted unless accelerating very hard and needing more than the 100-120bhp that the electric motor can provide with just battery amps. I can normally avoid using ICE at all on most days and typically it only comes on for longer trips at weekends.
