Remember Gunner Kiel? Dude was a 5 star and a complete bust. Stars don’t indicate how well they’ll play in college. Tanner Mangum sort of developed but he could not handle a pro style offense.
Arod has a player development issues. That’s not a surprise. EVERYONE on this chsnnel has commented on him. Also, The reason why byu got Hillstead is because GB isn’t what they thought he is. Why else would they get Hillstead 🤔and have 8+ qb’s in that room? That’s why byu struggles is because they aren’t consisted in qb play which equals lack of consistency in winning games.
Why does Jake defend Arod? Regarding recruiting, player development, Arod has struck out. Even his play calling, at times, is inexplicable. Why does BYU have so many qb's? Because they can't find one above mediocre. Even the latest, Keeney, was a last resort when BYU could not get any of the ones they tried to recruit. As always, as the qb goes, so goes BYU.
It's a Sitake problem they fired Funk deserving but it was just to cool the fire around A-RODS inability to call plays and scheme around his offensive talent!!! Sitake will have a major decision to make if the offence doesn't take a 360° change for the better!!!! Well see but I'm not holding my breath 🫁!!!!
Jake-the Cougars completely blew off an LDS 4-star quarterback from Texas named Will Hammond. Will attended several BYU camps, trained with Ty Detmer, and in a single game in his senior year (2024) threw for 719 yards and 4 TD’s, and added 88 rushing yards and 6 rushing TD’s (total 807 yards and 10 TD’s). Will was a lifelong BYU fan. Both of his parents are alumni. If BYU made an offer Will would have said yes. However, the brain trust at BYU didn’t even reach out to Will until well after several schools had already made offers. He had offers from several well known schools. BYU could not be bothered. Meanwhile Joey McGuire of Texas Tech and his staff had been reaching out to Will often and regularly. They attended some of his football games and he visited the campus and lived what he saw and experienced. He committed to them. He is the highest rated QB to be signed by Texas Tech (even higher than TT alumni Patrick Mahomes), Will was rated at 91 while Patrick was rated at 78.
I believe Baylor Romney had suffered some serious injuries that were not quick-rehab situations; I believe these may have significantly guided his decision to discontinue playing football. It wasn't just an, "I quit". situation.
It’s not recruiting, it’s development. Aren’t we, especially Jake, supposed to hold coaches accountable instead of making excuses for them? Baylor Romney isn’t the reason BYU hasn’t been able to develop any of the QB room since Jaren left. The offense, offensive line, and QB play has been so bad I’m sure recruiting has been difficult. Who would want to play for a team when most of the game is 3 & outs? Last year’s offense was historically bad and anywhere but BYU, the Offensive Coordinator and/or higher ups would have been gone. If we watch another season of receivers lining up wrong, lack of downfield blocking, confusion on the O line and embarrassing timeouts, I’m sure someone will have to make a decision on who on the staff is in over their head. No one enjoys seeing BYU having an over/under of 4.5 games. Hopefully Jay Hill can pull a rabbit out of his hat this year.
Jake, A-rod gets credit for Jaren Hall and Baylor Romney but Zach Wilson was mostly recruited by Kalani and Jeff Grimes. Being in on it doesn't make much of a difference. And the fact that none of his QBs have faired well in the NFL is probably being used against him. He's got to recruit better though, to blame the current situation on anyone other than A-rod is an exercise in insanity. He said he wanted to add a QB in every class and he didn't. If Nolan Keeney and Enoch Watson pan out then we will be singing his praises again but that needs to come to fruition and if it doesn't then his time at BYU might be short and that is as it should be. You can't have QBU not have a playable QB. All that said, if Jake Retzlaff pans out he's going to look like a genius again.
You listed the 2 NFL guys from BYU who was originally recruited by someone else. But no one from Utah made any cuts 🤦🏽♂️😂🤣 If this was the defense he would have been fired already but since it’s the offense they get treated differently because of its prestige.
@LockedOnCougars I saw that rebuttal coming from a mile away. I agree, the hit on both those guys. But more often than not those three star kids don't pan out.
@AboveAvgMan Bust is strong. Maybe not NFL starters but they'll have longish careers. Zach is easier to say is a bust due to where he was drafted. Jaren being drafted in the 5th round doesn't qualify as a bust.
As a former player of mendehnall and sitaki, I can tell you the culture shift was extremely palpable. It went from every practice being an all out war. It went from Mendenhall secretly standing by for a few seconds enjoying when players would get into scuffles before he “flushed” the team (had us do sprints/other things to exhaust us as punishment) to sipping pina colada’s on the beach with everyone walking around chit chatting under Sitakis practices. No hard feelings towards sitaki he just didn’t bring the old school heat necessary to compete at this level. Mendenhall was stoic and clam on the outside but he was an obsessive fierce competitor and extremely intense coach on the inside. It’s almost the exact reversal with sitaki. He’s more concerned with being buddies and leaving a Polynesian imprint on the program than being cut throat enough to win.
Watched nolan play in person and it was obvious his skill level is next level for highschool
LOVE BYU 4 LIFE!! NO MATTER WHAT !
The QB room has a positive flow, let's go! Bring out the competition! Let's ROLL!
Didn’t the lack of Jacob Conover’s development cause the problem. He was a four star offered by Alabama.
Well he didn't develop very well at Arizona State as well so I don't think it was the BYU coaching it was the problem
nah he was just a bust

That is One reason.

Sitake isn’t in over his head? BYU has hit the ceiling w/him.
The money to hire the assistant coaches he needed just started a year ago. The development takes a couple years from then.
This is the right take imo Civic_Doodie8955

Being in the room when a prospect is recruited does Not mean Arod recruited Zach W. Amazing how many take credit for John Beck’s coaching.

If a 3-Star QB is the crown jewel then the Cougs be in trouble.
Zach Wilson & Jaren Hall were also three-star prospects...just saying

Both are nfl bust.

No such thing as smooth sailing in NCAA football anymore
Should have kept that fast qb from new mexico bowl.
Find and recruit a QB that is NOT going on a church mission.
Show some film, let us evaluate as well.
Google Nolan Kennedy Hudl highlights. I’ll see what I can do to include them going forward
Please don't do videos with gum hanging out of your mouth.
Kalani and arod suck until byu gets rid of these two idiots byu will be a loser program
