Frederick William (Friedrich Wilhelm) Herschel
(Hanover, 15 November 1738 - Slough, 25 August 1822)
German-English composer, astronomer, biologist, organist, and conductor. The son of an oboist in a military band, Isaac Herschel (1707-1767), he was trained by his father, later joining his elder brother Jacob Herschel in the band. In 1755 a tour to England convinced him that his future lay in the country. In 1757 he immigrated permanently, eventually becoming a violinist in the Newcastle orchestra under Charles Avison. After similar positions in Halifax and Leeds, he succeeded in 1767 in becoming the organist at the Octagon Chapel in Bath, where he remained the rest of his life. In 1780 he became the conductor of the Bath orchestra, overseeing the public concerts. Herschel is best known for his work as an astronomer, including discoveries of the planet Uranus and being a founding member of what became the Royal Astronomical Society. He was also a biologist who published on the cellular construction of coral. As a composer, he was well regarded during his lifetime for his progressive and inventive works, particularly his symphonies. Stylistically these are similar to Joseph Haydn in style. The works include 24 symphonies, 12 concertos (for viola, violin, oboe, and organ), 45 voluntaries, 24 caprices and a sonata for solo violin, six trio sonatas, three keyboard sonatas, a complete Anglican service, and numerous Psalms and anthems.
Herschel accomplished tremendously in Astronomy. How fascinating! I just run my wild imagination how the Universe inspired his music making. 🌠🌌
Yes! He was an outstanding astronomer with the invaluable help of his sister Caroline Herschel, today unfairly forgotten en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroline_Herschel
@@Reciclassicat If Caroline Herschel had been born a century later, she would have received a Nobel Prize. Today there are quite a few women in the field of astronomy and quantum physics. Very encouraging.
The strings' trills in the third movement brings me to the universe a little while. 🔭😊
Musica bellissima, freschissima, piacevolissima. Da riscoprire con queste bellissime esecuzioni. Grazie per avermela proposta 👏👏👏
Thanks ❤
This haunting Adagio with its sudden pauses and key changes brings to mind the work of the very forward-looking Swedish Mozart Joseph Martin Kraus. I'm glad Mr. Herschel brought beauty to the earth while helping discover with his sister Caroline the world beyond.
+Pau NG ,
This really is a very lovely Symphony in wonderful Classical style - though it still has many Baroque elements..
It's definitely a delight to hear this very charming Music - and it's performed incredibly well too.
I added it (i.e. a bookmark) to my "All Time Favorite Music List" because it certainly deserves this Place of Honor.
Thank you posting & sharing it with us all !
Blessed Be - "May beautiful Classical Music always be with you".
❤😊😊❤
Thanks Raven Timish! Regards!
Thank you Pau NG for introducing the You Tubisphere to the works of little known Classical era composers. You do for the 18th Century what KuhlauDilfeng4 does for the 19th and both are very valuable.
Thanks Barry Malkin! Indeed, I really love 18th Century music (but 17th & 19th Centuries too!!)... Greetings! ;-)
Although not a period ensemble, these London Mozart Players did an excellent job of promoting some unusual classical repertoire!
Boy: My dad is a rich entrepreneur your loser, what about yours?
William Herschel's son: Oh he's just a classical composer and discovered Uranus.
Great! Herschel certainly has to be added to the masters of the 18th century symphony (among Haydn, Kraus, the Bachs etc.)
Herschel was a fine musician, and competent composer; but as a composer, he falls well short of all those your rather wide-ranging list - a list that oddly omits Mozart.
When William was 9 years old, Bach not far from him in Germany was composing his Musical Offering. Bach was 62 at the time. Interesting.
This is quite excellent !!! Thanks !!!
For a moment I thought, this can't be *the* William Herschel? But yes, it's him, the discoverer of Uranus. Reminds me of Philidor, who was also a chess grandmaster, and Joseph Boulogne, who was also an athlete. Yes, some people are multitalented to a humiliating degree...
Fantastic piece of music . Many thanks Pau NG for uploading these otherwise unknown composers and wonderful music to RUclips .
Honestly this is such gripping music, and his moving bass and the writing for inner voices is astounding.
Carey T Coleman Jr. I agree a lot!!!
Thanks
Nice!
I like to enjoy music from not popular musician like Mozart, Beethoven & Haydn.
I looked into Wm Herschel after I learned that he was a G/G/Great Uncle of my first wife. Also learned he discovered the planet Uranus! Amazing fellow.
Wow! Your first wife has a privileged DNA then! 😉
@@Reciclassicat Yeah, I felt that the 13 years we were together, and it did show up in our two sons!
6:50 awesome !!
0:00 - 11:30 is awesome !! :-D
The second movement gives me all the feels
This is actually very catchy.
is it ever! Can't stop listening to it!
🎉🎉🎉
This symphony brinds fresh feeling to us.
That third movment though!!!
Woooow !! Thank you Pau NG !
Very enjoyable! 💖
Yet another composer with Moravian ancestry! What a haunting 3rd movement as if a tune from a distant nebula...and always with a cheerful happy resolution... those horns...wowww.. Interesting life-path of this composer / astronomer ending in England... like some of the others we know. Thank you Pau....
Thanks! I really love Herschel's symphonies!
This is the guy who discovered Uranus?
Indeed. Astronomer and composer! ;-)
don't want any guy to discover my anus whatsoever

Pau NG Deserves more respect!
I think this Herschel was born in the same year of Joseph Haydn. His style is totally from the Classic- Epoque.
Haydn was actually born six years before Herschel.
...what`tragedy`of`gingis`han.i`beg`you`padent....i`never`promise`a`rose`of`garden[hush],but`the`music`is`good.
Yes, this is the famous astronomer William Herschel, who was trained as a musician and later took up astronomy as an amateur (!).
Grazie della stima e distinti saluti.
good work; thank you for posting :) - whereby you compare this opus to the age-matched Haydn brothers (Joseph and Michael) you still notice that there's is a huge stilistic difference in counterpoint
Amazing painting , as well ! What are the details ?
The painting details : Anicet Charles Gabriel Lemonnier (1743-1824) - Reading of Voltaire's L'Orphelin de la Chine (a tragedy about Ghengis Khan and his sons, published in 1755), in the salon of Madame Geoffrin (Malmaison, 1812)
Shoutouts to the guy for discovering Uranus
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
May be he was going south when he composed this .......he still belongs to the North !
Composer and pastime astronomer and telescope maker..
Astronomer and telescope maker and pastime composer after he moved to England - ie most of his life.
