  • I was really nervous ab filming this and say um and like about a thousand times so I’m sorry ab that, I just wanted to keep it real and didn’t feel like cutting them all out. This definitely was more out of my comfort zone to be filming, hope I wasn’t talking too fast to where you couldn’t understand me haha. If you’re going through something similar I’d love if you would reach out or if you have any questions I would be happy to answer them!! I will be shocked if anyone actually watches the whole thing.

    I just got my surgery yesterday,im in the hospital right now. And honestly it’s not that painful. And I got to eat actual food the day of my surgery but I threw it up lol. But if you do have to get surgery just know nothing will happen,you’ll do great. And I highly recommend getting it cause it’s worth it. I can already breathe so much better,and a bunch of other stuff.

      I have scoliosis as well. I just got my brace a few weeks ago. That shit is a medieval torture device. If it were up to me I would honestly just rather get the surgery than having to wear the brace for 3-5 years. My mom is so against the idea of getting surgery though which sucks...

    i have 3 curves, one in my lower back which is about 45°, middle back which is 66°, and my neck has a 30° curve. i had 2 braces, both of which i never wore out of discomfort and how self concious it made me. i absolutly hate my body right now. i want surgery so badly, i just want to look normal. im at a loss. im so depressed. i just want to sit in a ditch and never come out. i dont want anybody to look at me. i have always been very short and small because of my scoliosis and i cant stand it. i have no confidence left at all. scoliosis is the worst thing that has ever happened to me, and it will always be in the back of my head no matter what i do. there is no escape from my body.

      Please check out Dr. Loren Fishman and get a consultation via Skype or in person if you can. I had a 68 degree C curve in my middle to lumbar spine and after a year of doing the exercise routine he gave me it reduced to 52 degrees and is still reducing as i'm continuing the exercises, this is not a scam or anything I promise please check it out

Does insurance cover the surgery cost? How painful is the surgery/recovery? We’re you able to get back to your daily normal life without any complications? Can you bend normally? Are there any movements that cause pain? Is the surgery permanent or do they remove the rods and other stuff after you stop growing?

    I had a back brace and wore it for about a week. Mine was huge, it completely covered my chest and it stuck out in every angle. I remember the first time I put it on I just cried (I was 11). I didn’t go to school because of how scared I was. The last time I wore it was when I went to the garden centre to get flowers with my dad. I have social anxiety and all the weird looks and stares I was getting caused me to have a panic attack. It made it so hard to breath that I almost fainted. When I went to bed that night the Velcro wrecked my bed sheets. After that I never wore it again. My curve has gotten worse and I’m hoping to get surgery one day. I really wished the brace worked out but I remember just thinking about it made me cry. This video really helped me. Thanks

    Such a good video! I’m looking into this surgery for myself. Do you feel any sort of aching/nerve pain after the initial recovery? As in 6 months into recovery and beyond, I’m terrified of being in more pain after than now. Currently dealing with daily back pain, numbness, headaches, and hip pain. Also are you able to “feel” the hardware inside? Or does your back just feel like one unit, I’ve heard some people say they can feel it which is obviously super scary.

    I know this was 6 months ago but I'm 12 and I got diagnosed with scoliosis a year ago and i also do gymnastics so that makes everything worse.
    Update: I found out that I have 2 curves so it's like an S. The top curve is 37 degrees and the bottom is 15 degrees. I am getting a brace but I only have to wear it at night. I am so glad and thankful that I can still do gymnastics for now. I have been doing it for 9 years so it is very important to me.

      Lauryn Else That’s crazy!! I’m too young to worry about it now, but I’ve thought about not being able to get an epidural before because of my back. But for me prior to my surgery I experienced more aching and after my surgery is when i delt with nerve pains but that was only when I overworked myself and did more than my body could take. My pain before was a whole not worse than after. I would recommend surgery if you have talked to your doctor and he thinks it is suitable for you and the pain. It is a difficult and long recovery so you may have more to figure out before you would get it since you have a son and are older than I was. talia rblx hey! don’t worry luv i felt the same exact way and it’s really nerve wracking at first. i tried my best to stay calm on the way there and while i was meeting with my doctors before the surgery and such they really calmed me down! so they of course put you to sleep and when you wake up you’re a bit loopy and such but slowly you clear up. it’s a bit painful at first since you have a whole different shaped spine so it obviously feels different. genuinely the pain comes and goes but you learn to get used to it and it’s there for only a little bit! i felt completely painless about 3 weeks after surgery so it’s a slow process but it’s worth it :)

    Hi my name is Tori I'm 23 years old and I have scoliosis. First of all thank you for sharing your story Emily. I was diagnosed on June 4th, 2010. I never had to wear a brace because I was not a candidate for one. It honestly was scary because the specialist who diagnosed me could only tell me my spine was going to get worse (my curves were already 30 and 35 degrees at diagnosis) and that I wasn't a candidate for a brace. I saw a different specialist in 2013 and he was the surgeon who did my fusion May 7th, 2013. In November of 2015 my hardware was removed due to a late term spinal infection (well the infection was actually in the tissue under and around the spine). Over all I'm really proud of what I've been through. I do have one question for you though, did you struggle with anxiety or any emotional issues before or after surgery? I only ask because I did and I'm just curious if its normal or if i'm crazy. I struggled with anxiety and I was clingy to a few specific people who were like my safe people if that makes sense.

    • @EmilyNetzel
      @EmilyNetzel  5 лет назад

      Oh my goodness!! Thank you for sharing your story, and personally I did not struggle with anything like that after my surgery, although I promise you aren't crazy. It definitely was a difficult and long recovery process and adjustment

    Omg I relate to so many things you said, the sitting down pain, the car ride home, the rat's nest hair, the stickiest band aid ever (I screamed when my mom took it off lol)... I got my surgery back in 2012 so it's been a while. I was wondering, do you still struggle to sit down? Because you looked pretty relaxed sitting down in this video. I still look really really really straight when I do and it's so uncomfy, like I feel so stuck and it makes me really insecure cus I look like a stick lol. I basically have 0 mobility in my spine, did it loosen up for you?

    • @EmilyNetzel
      @EmilyNetzel  3 года назад

      It has not loosened up but the last few vertebrae of mine are not fused so I have a little bit of mobility in my lower spine. I can relate with the stick thing though ahhaha so many people comment on my posture and I honestly think that’s a great bonus, although sometimes you may wanna be able to slouch it just creates problems in the long run!

      I got the surgery on December 26, 2019... four days ago. It is VERY sore and it feels like you are laying on a brick when you lay on your back. But it is getting better each day and each day is something to look forward to!

      You’re gonna be really stiff for a while, but you’ll gain movement and feeling as you recover!

      I didn’t specifically experience rib pain, but my whole body was defintely ina. state of shock from being changed so drastically. I believe that it will go away as you heal. Praying for a smooth recovery for you!
