Unlike 99% of Tool's song the Pot has a straight forward meaning about a specific event. though Maynard's use of alliteration and metaphor the meaning is obscured to most listening. during the early stages of writing 10,000 Days a friend of Danny Carey was driving through Arizona and got pulled over by a cop, a roach of a marijuana joint was found in the car. the Friend was than arrested and went in front of a judge who was known for giving the stiffest sentence is the nation to cannabis offenders. mere days after the friend was sentenced the Judge was arrested in a motel room with two prostitues heroin and crack. Hence Liar Lawyer mirror for you whats the difference
Thank you for that. I now love my favorite Tool song even more now because of that awesome info. On a side note I had a friend get pulled over with a blunt of herb in Arizona, maybe 0.5 grams and ended up doing almost 2 years for it. So I absolutely believe that story.
there are several interviews in which Maynard brings in up and at least 1 interview in which Danny discusses it. at this point its been a few years so I don't remember exactly which interviews. this topic has been commonly discussed in several Tool groups that I'm a member of as well.
Drummer and bass playing off each other and Adam lighting it up with all the fills that no other guitarists does. Just awesome, that is why there called Tool cause they are a music Tool for everyone!
The verse is in 4/4. really. It's played in an unorthodox syncopation, but 4/4 nonetheless. It goes into a 3/4 in the bridge, and 6/4 during the breakdown before the final verse, but they keep it straightforward.
We just saw Tool in Atlantic City two weeks ago and it was a wonderful evening. Bucket list night. Mars Volta, Jimmy. 😬 How about Tetragrammaton... or Cassandra Gemini. Be the first to delve into this half hour opus. 🤫
shotokanclau I’ve listened to Cassandra three times now in the last 24 hours. I will never be able to get over how incredible this one song is (all their songs, I’m obviously biased). I don’t know if I can fully compare it to anything else. All I know is this track (this epic band) should be explored by all music appreciators because they deliver the goods. I’m desperate for some reactors to delve deep into Mars... Jim, you are by far the best one out there... keep going. We will appreciate it. Especially if you have the guts to tackle Cassandra. 😉🤘🏼
How freaking good to see you back and doing tool! I’d love to hear you discuss your feelings on them now that you’ve had a year to listen. Favorite songs??
Nice to see you again, Jim! This was a pit of a surprising pick, but never the less sooooo platinum with big diamonds. That bass is so strong and collaborating perfectly with the drums. And the guitar is there for the music, no single note too many or too much. Grooves like a moose!
Have you thought about reviewing any NINE INCH NAILS? It's all outstanding to the right ear but i particularly love the with teeth era as I went to alot of their shows in that tour and it's an under rated album imo
Yes! Change and growth are very natural and something I certainly welcome. I've mentioned it before, and it would be something completely different for your channel, but I really think you would enjoy Punch Brothers - specifically the song Familiarity.
You were talking about this song live, and I just saw them play it in Boston. Even better live, and the mix where I sat was sublime.... I enjoy your reactions!
empath, devin's new album, is so awesome. I love it. Before bed i put my headphones on with the lights of and close my eyes and listen to it, it's like an acid trip. It takes you through a range of emotions, and i love the album.
Welcome back Jim! Glad to see you "on your feet" as it were. I was listening to 10,000 days a few weeks back, and when the last song on the record ends (Viginti Tres) it went straight into Fear Inoculum like it was the same record. I was surprised and delighted.
Welcome back to Tool mate, good to see you up to your old tricks. Thanks for the early Christmas present! Never thought we would see another Tool reaction video from you this year. Glad to hear you're still enjoying Fear Inoculum. The tour supporting it was a breathing testament to the evolution of musical production, and loud as fuck! KJ bass was fucking bone rattling and Tool was more polished than I've ever heard them, the accompanying visual effects were simply stunning. I've seen a ton of live music and it was some really next level shit my friend! Anyway happy holidays to you and yours, great reaction and production Jim. We certainly have changed in the last 18 months since you first posted the Grudge! A new addition to the family, a new album, and a new Devin Townsend hoody too looks like!
Yay Jim's back. Jim a teaspoon of dried Oregano made into a cup of tea will always help every ill, it's a natural antitbiotic, antimicrobial, and antispasmodic. I have had to give conventional syrups and things that contain real or fake sugars, but oregano killed a hacking cough in two days with nothing else. I usually have a cup of it along side my coffee in the morning about twice a week. Keep doing TOOL love, and I love the additional cameras!! Much love from the midwest. #stuckinMO
Glad you’re feeling better. I always enjoy your reaction to Tool and I’m saying this before I’ve seen the entire video. Great song and lyrics are amazing.
Jim, you nailed some key items; it is very accessible and very direct for tool. Often it’s top 3 suggested tracks for first songs to intro a new listener too.
Hey Jim! I agree totally. The Pot and Sober are recommended so much because they are the most accessible for those new to Tool. Love the effects you used in your video. Very cool. Also cool is your Devin Townsend hoody! Hope you're feeling better, buddy.
Ah, perfect end for my day. Just walked home jamming all along the way to the Pot about 5 - 6 times and now I get to watch you groving along the song that stuck in my head. ❤ And you look great in black & white 😁
Will be seeing tool in Auckland on leap day with my girlfriend, right at the back of the stadium, dead centre. I've heard the lightshow and sound are best from there. I also turn 42 the week before.
Welcome back Jim, I love your reactions! I gotta inquire if you've had the opportunity to dive into any more The Mars Volta music?? I know last time you mentioned you couldn't just hold off listening to them for reactions. If you haven't heard all their stuff yet I gotta request reactions for 'Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus', 'Tetragrammaton', or 'Cicatriz ESP' Keep up the great work!
i can't believe you don't like opeth - continuum Jim. The way you described lovelorn crime's chord progression is how i feel about continuum. I still gave this vid a thumbs up. i don't know if i can trust your opinion anymore. plus you have the flu and no telling what damage to your senses has occurred.
Hey Jim, nice to see you back! The Pot is not particularly one of my favourite Tool songs but hey, still brilliant since Tool is one of those bands who couldn't write a bad song if they tried. Anyway, would be remiss if I didn't recommend Psychotic Waltz-Into the Everflow again. Cheerio
After watching different reaction videos to TOOL, I notice that they hardly give Opiate and Undertow a chance which would give a better understanding to their later tracks like this one. Everything from he guitar pace and vocal delivery has that early 90's grunge/rock style, but with the TOOL flair. Even 7empest reminds me of the most evolved version of a track from Opiate.
Love your work Jim! As an Australian prog rock fan, I would love to hear your thoughts on the band "Cog", in particular their first album "The New Normal". Released around the same time as Karnivool's "Themata", check out a song call "Real Life"... there's literally no reaction videos to their music on RUclips... BE THE FIRST!!!
Great video Jim, you have loads of Tool left to do. Something off Undertow album next. Maybe Bottom. Also don't forget to do The Faceless - Autothiest Movement part 1 to 3. 👍
What about some Rock from South America Jim? Haven't heard you (nor other channels) explore and discover those hidden gems. Start with "Gustavo Cerati - Tabu" perhaps? Should be fun
Tool are unmatched at making odd time signatures groove. No other prog band is that perfect at making the complexity only noticeable when you explicitly pay attention to it.
Whenever you feel someone is being hypocritical (which is nearly all the time these days), this song is perfect to let out some frustration. Loving the video effects btw!
mr jim: it would be awesome if you'd get into some pucifer. that's where mallard has been really mixing the creative vocal juices over the last fifteen years and it's really good stuff. grand canyon. momma sed. just look up their big ones. they're all pretty awesome.
I would love it so so so SOOOO much if you did the full Cassandra Gemini song by The Mars Volta. It's a long one, but if you liked The Mars Volta at all you should really do it... it's like their magnum opus. Plus it would just be awesome to see you react to it. Love your channel, thanks for everything!
Pissed off Maynard is the best. I've seen them play this live 3 times, and it sounds nearly perfect. Maynard holds back on the last scream, which is always disappointing. Great video! Cheers!
Hey Jim, here I am commenting as a long time viewer. Tool is my #1, whatever Devin does is in the top 3. I get your analogy, just need to remember that we're talking about the absolute peak..comparing any musician to either Tool or Devin is disadvantageous to other musicians. And I'm a huge fan of opeth, gojira,meshuggah...yes, I love my shit heavy.i just pick and choose what works best. As a band, Tool does better than others. As an individual, Devin does better than others. I don't know a better singer in the genre, rivals might be Tarja Turunen etc, point is he's a world class singer. And that guitar solo in deep peace akso puts him on the greatest guitar radar

Being a Tool fan for years and this being maybe in my top 10 sonds, I did not know that. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for that. I now love my favorite Tool song even more now because of that awesome info.
On a side note I had a friend get pulled over with a blunt of herb in Arizona, maybe 0.5 grams and ended up doing almost 2 years for it. So I absolutely believe that story.
@marc guidetti I had never heard that before. Do you have a source for it?
marc guidetti can anyone verify that story?
there are several interviews in which Maynard brings in up and at least 1 interview in which Danny discusses it. at this point its been a few years so I don't remember exactly which interviews. this topic has been commonly discussed in several Tool groups that I'm a member of as well.
You should do a reaction to Led Zeppelin's No Quarter followed by Tool's cover of No Quarter and compare the two.
yess
Like it
absolutly!
Definitely agree
Yes
i'm blown away by the editing!
didn't expect it in here
never seen a reaction video like this before
I was gonna compliment the editing as well! Very cool;]
Funky, groovy, a little filthy, highly recognizable voice. In other words Tool. Nice!
Relistening to TOOL again every few years is like watching T2 or Alien for the first time again in years. Rediscovering a classic
Drummer and bass playing off each other and Adam lighting it up with all the fills that no other guitarists does. Just awesome, that is why there called Tool cause they are a music Tool for everyone!
Saw the Jim Newstead thumbnail doing a Tool song, and it was an immediate click! Sorry you were ill, and happy that you're feeling better.
It produces so much dopamine
The verse is in 4/4. really. It's played in an unorthodox syncopation, but 4/4 nonetheless. It goes into a 3/4 in the bridge, and 6/4 during the breakdown before the final verse, but they keep it straightforward.
Vanilla Milkshake Nailed it
your reactions are the best. more tool please. just react to all of their songs lol
TOOL are the secret masters of groove
Jamband for Metal heads.
We just saw Tool in Atlantic City two weeks ago and it was a wonderful evening. Bucket list night.
Mars Volta, Jimmy. 😬
How about Tetragrammaton... or Cassandra Gemini. Be the first to delve into this half hour opus. 🤫
I vote Cassandra
shotokanclau

Inertiatic ESP
Dank Nug
That would suffice! 😉👍🏽
Those camera angles! Mallard would be proud. 🦆
cranboogie LOL! 😂
😂🤣🤣
How freaking good to see you back and doing tool! I’d love to hear you discuss your feelings on them now that you’ve had a year to listen. Favorite songs??

Ahhhh Jim, glad to have you back, and back on some Tool!
One of the most groovy Tool song
Welcome back. Glad you are feeling better. Nice set-up, great reaction.
Great thoughtful reaction as always and some fancy new editing, very nice!
It was GREAT LIVE.....matter of fact best concert I've ever been to n I've been to many in 40 yrs of concerts. LOVE Tool!!!
Have you thought about reviewing any NINE INCH NAILS?
It's all outstanding to the right ear but i particularly love the with teeth era as I went to alot of their shows in that tour and it's an under rated album imo
It's also got some kinda surprising groove in some of the songs
Good to hear you're better. Hope you're well soon. Thanks for another video!
Yes! Change and growth are very natural and something I certainly welcome.
I've mentioned it before, and it would be something completely different for your channel, but I really think you would enjoy Punch Brothers - specifically the song Familiarity.
So great to see another Tool reaction from you! I would love to see you react to their cover of No Quarter by Led Zeppelin
Agreed Hundo percent.
You were talking about this song live, and I just saw them play it in Boston. Even better live, and the mix where I sat was sublime.... I enjoy your reactions!
spiderbass65 I was there, too! Here’s my video of Stinkfist: ruclips.net/video/JCtEA9e_wp0/видео.html
Welcome back!! Sorry to hear about the bug!! Need you 100% for more Mars Volta reax! 😏😁👍🏼
Looking forward to the next ones!!
Hi there Jim. Glad to see you ok.
Love the new camera setup so dynamic
Great production! Your vids have certainly gotten much more technical since i started watching. Keep up the great work!
Love the new editing and angles! Sorry to say I’ve been on such a Tool kick that I haven’t watched your other reactions, I’ll have to remedy that.
Great video, Jim! Would love to see some Thank You Scientist on the channel. I think 'Caverns' would be a good song to start with.
empath, devin's new album, is so awesome. I love it. Before bed i put my headphones on with the lights of and close my eyes and listen to it, it's like an acid trip. It takes you through a range of emotions, and i love the album.
Ooh! Jim's getting all artistic with the video!
Welcome back Jim! Glad to see you "on your feet" as it were. I was listening to 10,000 days a few weeks back, and when the last song on the record ends (Viginti Tres) it went straight into Fear Inoculum like it was the same record. I was surprised and delighted.
So fun fact, this song is in drop D but when they play it live, they play it in drop C because Maynard’s voice has changed over the years
I like the multi-camera setup. I also like the video effects. Good job. Thanks.
Welcome back to Tool mate, good to see you up to your old tricks. Thanks for the early Christmas present! Never thought we would see another Tool reaction video from you this year. No TALK TALK OF THE NEW ALBUM
Wow its Jim! :D Cellar Darling - insomnia xD btw i joined the jazz band and an slightly progish alternative Rock band
Thanks for the entertaining vid, mate! Glad you're having fun & mixing it up a little.
Loved the editing in this one Jim! Great job and well done beating the dreaded man-flu 😜🤘🎶
Yay Jim's back. Jim a teaspoon of dried Oregano made into a cup of tea will always help every ill, it's a natural antitbiotic, antimicrobial, and antispasmodic. Cheers for another great one. Always happy to hear that bassline. My recommendation this time would be Gojira - The way of all flesh
Glad you’re feeling better. I always enjoy your reaction to Tool and I’m saying this before I’ve seen the entire video. Great song and lyrics are amazing.
"That's tool."
Yup! The bass performance on this is amazing! Nice edit too!
Jim, you nailed some key items; it is very accessible and very direct for tool. Often it’s top 3 suggested tracks for first songs to intro a new listener too.
Get well soon!
Nice camera angles as well. 👍
Love the new setup and editing.
Seeing you having a blast jamming and grooving to this had me cheesin' from ear to ear. Feel better, man!
Hey! I'm glad your back!
You should do some meshuggah next!
Would you give "Cemetery Gates" by Pantera a shot?
Yeeees!
Hell yes
Yeah man 👍
It need to be the full album version, not the shortened video.
yes! studio version please
Hey Jim! I agree totally. The Pot and Sober are recommended so much because they are the most accessible for those new to Tool. Love the effects you used in your video. Very cool. Also cool is your Devin Townsend hoody! Hope you're feeling better, buddy.
Cheers dude, much better thanks!
@@JimNewstead Glad to hear it!
Ah, perfect end for my day. Just walked home jamming all along the way to the Pot about 5 - 6 times and now I get to watch you groving along the song that stuck in my head. ❤
And you look great in black & white 😁
Jim. You are another level!!!!
love to see that you're back!
Well edited video, a stable set up and of course reaction. Keep it up!
Great seeing u back jim...hope alls well n I miss your Tool\Mallard reactions
Ha ha - love the multi cam, and black/white theme switch. Hate the Flu - glad ur back Jim.
This song is so good🤘🤘🤘.
Tool- you lied.
Cover of Justin’s (tool bassist) previous band.
Epic instrumentals 🎧😜
interesting insights into one of my fave Tool songs. Discovered Jim by accident but will definitely tune in again.
Will be seeing tool in Auckland on leap day with my girlfriend, right at the back of the stadium, dead centre. I've heard the lightshow and sound are best from there.
I also turn 42 the week before.
Aaaaaand he’s back! 😁👍🏻
Welcome back Jim, I love your reactions! I gotta inquire if you've had the opportunity to dive into any more The Mars Volta music??

Keep up the great work!
feintcircles
I like your style... 😉
Preaching to my choir.
Good call on the gateway thing. So far, my daughter loves The Pot and Jambi, hoping she'll find more Tool songs she likes. :)
Would like to see you do more Long Distance Calling, and perhaps branching into some other post-rock/post-metal bands.
i can't believe you don't like opeth - continuum Jim. The way you described lovelorn crime's chord progression is how i feel about continuum. I still gave this vid a thumbs up. i don't know if i can trust your opinion anymore. plus you have the flu and no telling what damage to your senses has occurred.
Great point about prior albums which I think are better, however it's tough to be hungry on a full belly. PS; the editing was awesome.
Love the multi-camera, nice addition.
Hey Jim,
nice to see you back! The Pot is not particularly one of my favourite Tool songs but hey, still brilliant since Tool is one of those bands who couldn't write a bad song if they tried.
Anyway, would be remiss if I didn't recommend Psychotic Waltz-Into the Everflow again.
Cheerio
The vocalist is MAYNARD. Not Mallard. 😝 Great videos, thanks for making these!
Jim! A reaction the Tool's live album 'Salival' would be just what the doctor ordered. It's really spectacular.
Ah, finally some more Mallard. Welcome back.
Mallard
After watching different reaction videos to TOOL, I notice that they hardly give Opiate and Undertow a chance which would give a better understanding to their later tracks like this one. Everything from he guitar pace and vocal delivery has that early 90's grunge/rock style, but with the TOOL flair. Even 7empest reminds me of the most evolved version of a track from Opiate.
Jim I always love your input on Tool songs. You have to do a video on Tool The Patient!
You’re not the first to ask.... I’ll get there eventually!
Cheers Jim!!!
Keep up the great work!
The time signature was mostly 4/4 and 3/4, since you asked. It's just a really nice syncopated groove!
Thanks for this one Jim!
Damn, that ''pot'' fan video with snails was silly and fuckin' great at the same time.
www.imdb.com/title/tt0309566/
Yeah I always liked the pairing of the song and that movie. It didn't make sense, but kinda did at the same time somehow.
Whenever you feel someone is being hypocritical (which is nearly all the time these days), this song is perfect to let out some frustration. Loving the video effects btw!
mr jim: it would be awesome if you'd get into some pucifer. that's where mallard has been really mixing the creative vocal juices over the last fifteen years and it's really good stuff. grand canyon. momma sed. just look up their big ones. they're all pretty awesome.
love the editing!
You're right about the gateway song, this is what I play to people to try and get them into it
Perfect groove in a next level aggressive rock. Simply amazing
The bass line in this song is awesome!
Liked the black and white! Great vid
No comments about the amazing Devin Townsend hoodie? How is that possible!?
Like the angles. I thought you were really, really excited about it, until I realised I’d left playback at 1.25 from another video
Haha!!
Nice reaction, and for sure this is the Tool tune i make new converts listen to first. Always works :)
Welcome back Jim. Not sure if it's the video you used or what, but the song itself sounded amazing here.
Bro i bought my son one of those launch pads , he used it 1 time and hasnt used it since !! AHhahHhahaH Thanks for the TOOL stuff !!
They changed but they didnt sell out. Which is amazing.
Pissed off Maynard is the best. I've seen them play this live 3 times, and it sounds nearly perfect. Maynard holds back on the last scream, which is always disappointing.
Great video!
Cheers!
I'm going to make an obscure recommendation.
Band: Sleepytime gorilla museum
Song: phthisis
Preferably a live version to try to capture their essence.
If you want to check out another straight forward tune by Tool, if you haven't done so already (I don't think you have, I believe I've caught all your Tool vids), you want to give Hooker With A Penis a go. It's one of their earlier tracks, it's very organic, I think you'll enjoy it. And no, the song is NOT about a prostitute necessarily, with male genitalia or not.
P.S. I really dig the new camera set up, the black and white effect you used was awesome. Very glad to hear you're feeling better. ♥
Triple-Jim Cam!
I have that exact electric drum kit.
Great reaction too lol
fantastic!
