  • Yingzhou lineage Heyang Tang Wuzu, Lian Tou "Training Beginning" form
Lian Tou was the core form of He Yang's system of boxing. The name Lian Tou is often translated as something like "practice head". Technically this is true however the first world Lian means to practice or train something and while the second word does mean head it can also mean the start or beginning of something. So the name literally means that the form is the start of training.
The He Yang Tang Wuzu Quan system is said to have been brought to Zhangzhou city by a boxing teacher who used the school name of He Yang Tang. Oral traditions regarding this teacher differ wildly between the different lines of He Yang Tang and other schools influenced by his teachings.
However older records suggest that his name was He Yang and he lived from 1816-1908, born in Yongding county in Longyan prefecture and was possibly of Hakka descent.
He Yang came to Zhangzhou in order to open a wine shop in the Yanglaozhou neighborhood of Zhangzhou city. While there he also began teaching the system of martial arts that he brought from his home in Longyan.
This school is often referred to as a Wuzu Quan school although practitioners of the school claim that their Wu Zu is a contraction of Wu Dai Zu Shi Quan "5th Generation Ancestral Teacher". This refers to Cui Shuyuan and his position as a 5th generation martial monk of the southern Shaolin temple. The oral mythology of the Heyang style claims the system was originally taught by a man named Cui Shuyuan who was a 5th generation martial monk at the Southern Shaolin temple and one of only 7 to escape the burning of the temple by Qing troops (2 of whom died from illness and injury shortly after leaving only 5 monks to spread the Southern Shaolin skills). Of course this is a direct adoption of the Xilu myth of triad lore.
However the He Yang school's Quanpu references Dazun, Xingzhe, Luohan, Baihe Xian, and Song Ming Taizu as ancestors. However this listing can also be found in Quanpu from white crane schools.
Also unlike modern Wuzu the He Yang Tang system does not practice San Zhan although it does contain the 28 constellations set which retains many of it's Luohan features.
As for boxing sets Lian Tou is considered to be the core form of the system. From there a student will learn are Shuang Sui "Double Following / Double Pacifying", Da Jiao "Striking to the Corner", Fu Hu "Subduing the Tiger", Si Da Duan "Four Big Sections", as well as more advanced forms such as Fenghuang Xia Tian "Phoenix Lands in Field", Qinglong Fan Shou "Green Dragon Overturning Hands", Dongbin Zuijiu "Lu Dongbin Drunk on Wine", Zhang Yide Lei Gu "Zhang Fei Beats Drum" / Xianren Lei Gu "Immortal Beats Drum", Er Shi Ba Su "28 Constellations".
Weapons include Guniang Gun Fa "Young Lady's Staff Methods", Da Dao "Big Saber / Guandao", Tie Chi" Iron Ruler", Wenwu Cha "Civil and Martial Fork", Jia and Shuang Jia "flail and double flails", Goulian Qiang "Sickle Spear", Gun "Staff" Shuang Gouliang "Double Sickles" Shuang He Dao "Butterfly Sabers", Shuang Fu "Double Hatchets", Qu Chi "Bent Ruler", Lu Jiao "Deer Horns". (Qu Chi also refers to a carpenters square, that and Lu Jiao are rare weapons and possibly unique to this system. The Lujiao is described as being short weapons and having two forks one short and one long. Not sure if this is on each weapon or if one weapon is shorter and the other longer.)
In addition to his martial arts He Yang also passed on the Lion Dance school said to descend from the southern Shaolin temple and to have also been passed on by 5th generation ancestral teacher Cui Shuyuan.
A number of He Yang's students went on to become famous for their skills. In particular Cai Yuming the famous founder of the biggest school of Wuzu in southern Fujian was counted among the 13 disciples of He Yang.
Soon several He Yang Tang schools opened up in the city and even began to attract students from outside the city such as Su Dashun who came to be recognized as one of He Yang's 13 inner disciples and who later returned to his home in Tianfeng village in Zhangzhou's Longwen district where he passed on He Yang's art to his fellow villagers. After that his successors studied other arts further developing the Tianfeng system and passing it to various villages around Zhangzhou.
Today there are two distinct branches of Heyang Wuzu. The Yingzhou line which uses the Tang Hao of He Yang Tang, and the Tianfeng line which uses the Tang Hao of Shuang Fa He Yang Tang.
The Yingzhou line represents the old system as taught by He Yang. The name Yingzhou comes from the name of the docks along the Nine Dragon River in He Yang's neighborhood.
The Tianfeng line represents the further evolution that happened in Tianfeng village and contains additional boxing sets from other systems as well as additional weapon sets from the Shuang Fa Tang school of Gongbu weapon arts.

Its really low resolution so looks hard to see, but it kinda looks like some of the hand work in the middle of the form looks like the second section of Wing Chun's Siu Lim Tao (Lim Tao being Cantonese for Lian Tou too)

Yeah there are also various Lian Tou sets in western Guangdong into Guangxi that also resemble this and to some extent Wing Chun's siu Lim Tao set.

Is this on a playlist or something? it should be unlisted.
Well anyway it's the core form of the He Yang Tang system.
This is the old He Yang Tang style, not one of the Wuzu lineages which use the name now.
It is one of the styles that Cai Yuming studied before creating his Wuzu Quan system. This is the source of what some Wuzu people claim is the northern Taizu longfist in their style coming from master He Yang from Shandong. Realistically they probably just made that claim to make the art sound more appealing as the big surge in Republican era Guoshu publishing spread the whole "northern legs southern fists" idea around.
The actual style taught by He Yang is still passed on in a few places today. There are two lines with one line having taken in some other local material and the less common line just teaching pure He Yang material. Both of them are clearly pure Minnan arts and both of them maintain that He Yang was a local man teaching a local art. There are also family records establishing that he was locally born to a local family.
Anyway this is the Lian Tou "Linking Head" form. It's the core form of the system.

Thanks for the info. It's good to see what the core He Yang art looked like compared with the modern Wuzuquan. The practioner looks pretty solid too. Not sure where I found it on your channel, but glad it's there.
