You could take a wet rag and hold it firmly against the overflow when you plunge. It's better to plunge pulling up rather than ramming down. This will help loosen the material/clog. Learned this from TheOldkid888... awesome plumber.
I would just like to mention that I had a clogged bathtub and I was not able to clear it with needle nose pliers or a plastic sink snake. The plunger, however, did the job successfully. And I did not have to close the vent. But I did have to remove the built in drain plug in order for the plunger to be effective. So a plunger may be worth a try in some cases.

I work in maintenance and i have done that technique and it actually work ..usually when its a light clog
