My fave game of all time. Apparently there was a different ending planned which would have been cool because with SF2 being such an epic adventure the current ending is very stock hero, princess stuff - the only low point of an otherwise great game.
I would have loved to see an alternate ending. Agree with you, it is the part that holds up the least well years later. Even by old standards it wasn’t great but time has only dated it even more. Good to see this game getting some love. 7-year-old me went to a halloween party dressed as Slade and, uh, no one quite got it. Went back and beat the game as an adult in 2012 and it reminded me of Dragon Age in terms of getting attached to the characters in your party and actually getting excited when it's a certain character's turn in combat since you know they have something amazing up their sleeve that can win a fight for you.
Lmao I'm cracking up at the thought of some little kid dressing up as a rat with a sword and no one knowing who the fuck it is. Props to you sir. Just discovered your channel from your 8 great jrpgs video, and I clicked because I saw Peter on the thumbnail. I adore this game, and still play it every few years, along with Legend of Dragoon and Dragon Warrior 3. Can't wait to watch all your videos on retro games and hopefully find a gem or two that I never knew about.
I love Shining Force 2, I remember exploring square inch of the game, searching every nook and cranny of every building, viillage, and map for secrets, like items that contain secret promotions for some characters or ways to unlock secret characters and whatnot. My favorite character to use was Kiwi just because he was a cute little turtle that if given enough time to level up, can turn into an absolute beast.
I didn't start playing this game till i got my sega megadrive collection for my xbox 360 back in 2011. I instantly fell in love with this game, it's the best starting point for tactical rpgs, it has a very unique visual art style which really made me more invested to beat the entire game. As an artist myself I do get stingy with JRPGs having that generic art style which can turn me off in most jrpgs, I do give them a chance I do try to at least play most rpgs for 2 hours or i watch youtube videos of them and if after the 2 hour mark if it doesn't appeal to me then I just peace out. It's one of the reasons why I loved Golden sun (done by the same guys from the old shining games), Nino Kuni, Final fantasy Amano and Tetsuya eras and of course Akira Toriyama of Dragon Quest, Chrono trigger, blue dragon and dragon ball fame. Having a style that just pops out can go a long way for a game. in 2020 I've been playing a ton of coop action games and rpgs of all kinds, but I've beaten SF2 about two times, one that was early in the year then 2nd was around summer. Just at the 2021 new year I was already in the middle of my third playthrough but this time I'm doing a 100% run all characters maxed out so I get to use those more least likely played characters more play time rather than having my Rat slade just cut down everything, in my recent run I'm not using peter as much but have been using him to set up farming strats to get my weaker units all fed and all that. Still to this day we never get rpgs where you have such a big diverse cast of character races. Infact the only rat protagonists i've seen in rpgs ever is Freya from FF9 and Slade from this game. Rarely we do get to play as werewolves, feline characters or something similar. They're mostly used as bad guys which really sucks because in rpgs no matter if their stories are good or bad I do like getting to know more about other cultures and races rather than just plowing through the game just to get strong and win... I can't get down with rpgs that just suck ass with bad representation of various cultures and races. I don't have childhood nostalgia like everyone does with this game but... it maybe about 9 years since i first played the game... it's still one of my favourite rpgs of all time. Infact I'm into tablet top and other tactical rpgs thanks to this game. I know remake demands are a cliche' these days but i would love to see the OG team or dedicated fans to remake this game, expand on the story, stay true to the art style but change it into 3D so we can have some better direction with character drama like comedy, reacting/emoting/reflecting upon what is or has happened. I have ideas on how to better represent the cast of the force better tho their scenes won't be too long where they take over too much time or don't feel irelevant to the plot later on. I always think of Dragon Quest 8 and 11 when it comes to JRPG drama with a good balance of comedy and sadness because that series pretty much does it better than most other rpgs imo. Sorry for the long as heck message but I do have alot to say about this game. If fans wanted to remake this I would be down for writing and redesigning the game (tho it will be faithful to the main game)
No worries at all for the long message. Being passionate about something is nothing to apologize for. It sounds like we have very similar opinions and tastes regarding art styles in games and different race representation. All of the games you mentioned are some of my favorite art styles as well. Akira Toriyama’s style might be my all time favorite, as cliche as that it is to say. And yes I agree that having a captivating setting/style with a unique cast of characters really does a lot in drawing you into the game, even if not every other aspect of the game is perfectly executed. Games like the Breath of Fire series and Grandia also come to mind for me when it comes to varied races/cultures in your party and a charming visual style to keep you engaged. The overall aesthetic really does play a big factor for me and I’m willing to overlook some smaller stuff if the style is that awesome, it just creates a really relaxing atmosphere. If fans ever did want to attempt a SFII remake sometime down the road, count me in! While I’m not the most savvy when it comes to programming/technical stuff, I could at least contribute to a script or something else.
I was looking for rogue Galaxy reviews and discovered your channel, and have been really enjoying your content :) can't wait to watch your other reviews, keep up the good work !!
This was my first ever jrpg and I had an absolute blast with it. So glad to see a video covering it! I agree with your main point about the gameplay because oh boy I loved every second of it. It just gives you the itch to keep on playing and always improving your strategy for the next time. Quite addicting. And let's not forget the post game content 😉
While I also dislike the ending, it's worth mentioning that comparing it to FF6 and Chrono Trigger is a bit unfair, since those games came out later (in CT's case, much later), and Shining Force's direct competition on the SNES was the far more basic storytelling of FF4 and FF5, which I'd argue it mostly holds up well against barring a few odd moments like the "Let's Throw Bowie!" scene. Phantasy Star IV is an apt comparison though, as it was released the same year as Shining Force II.
My sister worked at a video store so she hired it out for me for a weekend, then found out my best mate owned it , so borrowed it from him. For me it's still the best game ever. Thanks for the review and I ca t help but agree with it all. If you're doing a suikoden review don't skip the 1st game lol SF 1and 2 are my faves next to the suikoden series. This was a fair and balanced review, and the most spot on part was the music, that gets stuck in your head for years,
Thanks for the feedback, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Tbh I was a little nervous at first to cover classics like this because I know they have passionate fanbases and I wanted to make sure I do them justice, so that’s relieving to hear lol. Videos will be coming over the first 2 Suikoden games eventually (and the rest of them), I’ve just played the second one more recently so that one will probably come first. Breath of Fire 3 is our next video planned which should be out within a few days
For modern audience the narrative can be weird or even off putting, but it's a game from the early 90s. Most character development from that time was reduce to 5 or 6 sentences.
I know my personal gripes with him are petty as hell lol he is an absolute unit in battle. Yeah the game kicks ass, we just included it in our recent video over 8 great jrpgs that have aged well. A timeless classic for sure
This one was interesting because of how it allowed you to grind like a lunatic. And it wasn't even tedious. Grinding in the original game was horrible, but this one actually weirdly made it fun.
the satisfaction of grinding Sara and Karna all the way to lvl. 40, to then Upgrade both to Monks with Vigor Balls, and steamroll the game with the 3 available at the game.....
No writing but good as it gets adventure and friendship to overcome hardship. This is something games are missing today that WoW only touched on in classic - lich king. That anyone, even if they sucked like kiwi or luke, had a piece to contribute to the success of the party.
I for one love the story in this game... modern stuff has dialog you can get some popcorn and sit and listen to or read for an hour... just turn your brain off and listen to this... nah, I want Shining Force 2 story, where the main character even barely says anything... you get to decide what he says... you can make it your own in the framework of a mostly pretty good story that leaves room for the imagination.
Yeah he is a beast in battle I admit, personally I’m not a fan of his design though so I stopped using him after getting a full party for that reason alone. Haha call it stupid but unless the game is extremely hard and calls for it I usually just end up using whatever characters I like the best design and personality wise

Saw this game on a list of top Genesis games, and realized this was that game. Just watched your video, and I definitely need to find this and play it now. Definitely. Loved Phantasy Star IV.
Hell yeah, PSIV is another great one that we plan on talking about in more detail here soon enough. And yeah you should definitely give this one a playthrough if you get the chance, we just included it in our most recent vid about 8 great jrpgs that have aged well so it's held up really well I think
@@GamingBroductions I realized I already had it. It was included on the Sega Genesis Classics on Steam and Switch. I've been playing it on my PC on days off. I'd get too wrapped up in it to play on days I work. PSIV and Landstalker were my favorite RPG style games on Genesis. On NES, I never got into Final Fantasy, but Dragon Warrior 2 and Swords & Serpents I played a ton. We didn't have an SNES, so didn't have a chance to play the ones on that platform.
Replaying this game now for like my 40th time, just got to the geshup fight. I originally got a switch like 6 months ago to play newer games bust found myself playing resident evil 4 and this over and over. Such a great game I’m sure i will play it again and again

I get your point but none of those characters were the ones in discussion. They were making it seem like humans should only be with humans, elves should only be with elves, dwarves should only be with dwarves, etc. which does come off pretty racist. It’s not like romance between species like this hasn’t been done in the past either, like in Lord of the Rings for example. The tone in which it was presented maybe made it come off a bit more like that as well. But just my personal opinion
@@GamingBroductions When we use the term "racist" in modern vernacular, we use it in a sloppy way. Blacks, whites, asians, etc. - they're all part of the human race, and therefore discrimination is irrational. But fantasy elves and dwarves are apparently inhuman. Literally inhuman. They may look similar, but a union with one would likely not result in offspring, anymore than you'd get a baby by porking a golem girl.
@@captainunload There's quite some interesting arguments that could be made regarding this subject. If dwarfs and elves truly are inhuman then they should be considered different species not races, however in most cases they are referred as "races", hinting that in fact humans, dwarfs and elves all belong to a same unnnamed species and "human" in this context refers to a subspecies or race. The fact that apparently elves and humans can interbreed in most fantasy settings also would support the theory that elves and humans in fact belong to the same species, and that would include orcs as well! Though it could also be argued that in the fantasy world interbreeding works magically and it can succeed between different species since we even have half-dragons.
@@BigBillKelly-x2z Well, for one I implied the ability to consistently produce fertile offspring, since nothing suggests that half-elves and half-orcs can't reproduce. So that excludes cases like mules and ligers. But anyway even in those very rare cases where different species can consistently produce fertile offspring, the species are extremely close genetically and the distinction into separate species is dubious.
@@joncliffmckinley5868because they defeated the evil, and they all lived happily ever after. I don't like open-ended endings. Everything is wrapped up neatly. No loose plots.
The ost got on my nerves. Maybe not if you hadn't had to listen same tracks over and over again but the battle music bleep, bloops got really tiresome.
Yeah not a a great review, didn't know the lord of the series or the comics / manga that was tied to it and barely touched on the wonderful comparison to the other games in the series and the fact that you threw in some stupid left-wing bull crap about race at the very end about a fantasy game from Japan in 1992 just really makes shows that you were not passionate or informed about this
This was our very first retrospective from years ago now, the quality compared to our recent retrospectives is night and day and feels like a completely different channel. I may not have been the best at reviewing things back then but the passion for the game and for the genre has always been there. I just wasn’t great at analyzing certain things or articulating my thoughts in our earliest videos
"The songs are catchy" bro the music has been stuck in my head for probably my entire life

Can't believe you did Karna dirty like that lettting them become a vicar. Master monk for life.
Really love this game, apparently they’re making a mobile game with some of the characters from the first and second
I definitely disagree with you about the ending you got to talk to all your friends one last time
I totally agree with you, this game is great 👍 my favorite RPG ever
Bro 1:04 is 💯
Groovy 😂😂😂😂
Very rad
My buddy worked at a Blockbuster, and he brought home a game for a night, and we didn't get very far in, and I forgot what it was called, but I always wanted to get back to it.
We didn't have an SNES, so didn't have a chance to play the ones on that platform.
so so good
Just want to point out it's not racism if they're entirely different species lol
Replaying this game now for like my 40th time, just got to the geshup fight. I originally got a switch like 6 months ago to play newer games bust found myself playing resident evil 4 and this over and over. Such a great game I’m sure i will play it again and again
Still hoping for a real Shining Force game one day.
12:13 me too, Kiwi, me too 😔
Still the best game I’ve ever played
Everyone forced the main character to fall in love with the princess and they only saw each other twice that’s not love
This game taught me how to read. No joke
I hear you the dialogs could have been better. But they also could have been worse lol! The game as a whole I would say is good though.
Now I know why this got so little likes the into isn't the greatest... but the rest is good!
I think the balls of hair are supposed to be Elise's braided hair.
i felt true heart ache i was 10 at the time when sarah ran off crying before you wed the princes i was like i dont want her let me find sarah will live in the forest.....
yea the battles are snapy
SFII the GOAT
“Fueled by racism and a lack of logic.” 😂😂
Now a Nintendo switch game apart of Sega classics
The writing isn't that bad holy hell
Is it racist to not want to kiss a giant humanoid rat or a fire breathing turtle?
I get your point but none of those characters were the ones in discussion. They were making it seem like humans should only be with humans, elves should only be with elves, dwarves should only be with dwarves, etc. which does come off pretty racist. It’s not like romance between species like this hasn’t been done in the past either, like in Lord of the Rings for example. The tone in which it was presented maybe made it come off a bit more like that as well. But just my personal opinion
@@GamingBroductions
When we use the term "racist" in modern vernacular, we use it in a sloppy way.
@@JannPoo
That last dragon example really undermined your otherwise decent case. Lol
You promoted Karna to VICR and we cannot be friends. Soz...
But she gets more MP that way....
Seriously? The ending didn't appeal to you? Wow..
That’s because he looks just like Jaha
Hence the explanation of racism and self hate when looking at Jaha.
Why do you LIKE the ending?
@@joncliffmckinley5868because they defeated the evil, and they all lived happily ever after.
I don't like open-ended endings.
Everything is wrapped up neatly.
No loose plots.
@@ArabKatib i would always wonder about lemons fate when he made his sacrifice
The ost got on my nerves. Maybe not if you hadn't had to listen same tracks over and over again but the battle music bleep, bloops got really tiresome.
"Shitty racist fanfiction" Didn't see anything racist about this, but you do you. I'll make sure to blacklist this channel.
Wait, what's racist about this game?
