    We got our very first color TV in the mid-1960's, and it was this RCA model. We already had a motorized antenna, and I'll never forget how excited my Dad was as we anxiously waited for the set to be delivered. Dad was edgy as hell, and I had to keep emptying his ashtray; I think he smoked a whole carton of cigarettes in just a few hours! It was early Saturday evening, and finally, the RCA man arrived. The set was gently placed where it needed to go, and the technician spent a full hour warming the set up and using that 'wand thing' that they always used in those days, but us kids didn't know what it did! The look on my Dad's face when the TV set was up and running was like he had seen the face of God!!! I was amazed at the 'huge' screen! The RCA man gave us his card and told us to call him if we had any problems, and he left. It was just me, Dad, and the RCA, and we were just in time for one of my favorite shows and it was, Flipper, and it was in color! I got up early Sunday morning just to watch the 'test pattern'!

    This is almost exactly identical to our first color TV which was originally purchased by my grandparents. I always thought it was a 1964, but it may have been a 65, they just purchased it early. Ours had a more minimal wood cabinet and more clearly defined legs. I believe the speaker was also the 4 x 6 on the side that you mention. It had a great picture. one evening in 1971 picture went funny, lil puff of smoke, nasty smell, and that's all she wrote. Replaced with a 71 Sylvania Console. It seemed to need a lot of fixing and tweaking at first. I always liked the RCA better for some reason. But step dad had other plans.

    We had neighbors who bought an RCA set in '65 in a Danish Modern cabinet. Had a nice picture, and was a great looking set. One thing I remember, though, was being told to NOT touch it. The settings were all adjusted and it wasn't to be changed. Shoot, when my folks got their set in '69, my dad had ME adjust it for color after the install guy adjusted it to our antenna. The original settings were boosted and my folks preferred more natural color. The good old days.

    My folks bought a Westinghouse H840CK in 1954 - it was the first color tv on the market, as I recall beating RCA by weeks. The chassis was an RCA CTC-2. I know that well as I became the set's guardian angel. The picture was absolutely gorgeous as the NTSC phosphors utilized on the 15GP22 were RICH, GORGEOUS. Those phosphors unfortunately were phased out for brighter images. We bumped up to a 21" RCA a CTC-5 called the Wescott, brighter image, but poor color compared to the Westinghouse --- I'd like to dream that perhaps the H840CK at the TV Museum might be our set...I believe less than a dozen are known to exist today.

    @EricandDish "The Tonight Show" had been in color ever since 1959, the heyday of Jack Paar.
    Very few color tapes of "Tonight Shows" prior to the early 1970's exist. Some black-and-white kinescopes do exist of shows from the 1960's (and earlier).

    That's an excerpt from the December 31, 1965 "New Year's Eve" edition of "THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON", one of the rare videotapes of that period to exist today (note that Woody Allen, who was also a guest that evening, is sitting next to Johnny, who's wearing a tux as part of the festive mood).

    Seeing this video makes me wish we had colour in the 60s.
    Aussies didn't have "roundies" and most of the tube sets were B&W.
    One of the solid state colour sets we did have was the Philips K-9 chassis (made around late 1974) - with a VHF only rotary wafer tuner and delta gun CRT. Later the K-11 chassis was released with UHF push button tuning and an inline gun tube.
    Both chassis sets featured plug-in modules for chroma-luminance, demodulation, sound, frame and line control on the right-hand signal board, plus a module in the power supply.
    Compare a flat panel plasma set to a vintage roundie - notice the difference?

    I would appreciate your views and feelings regarding something that I actually do: "Calibration".
    Calibration is the current buzzword for alignng a TV or other display's picture control to reference voltages or test patterns, via oscilliscope or pattern displayed on a TV's screen via disc or other media.
    I personally have had mostly satisfying results with using DVDs and Blu Rays to properly set at least the two basic (black & white) or five basic(color) TV pictures settings available to the user.
    90 percent of people watch their TVs with the picture settings left at whatever setting they left the factory at, most not even understanding what each control actually does.

    I really like those american TVs of that era. Germany got color in 1967 using the PAL system, but even though PAL fixes some NTSC flaws, it doesn't have this "warmth".

    • @wuloki
      @wuloki 3 года назад

      Another thing is that in West-Germany we never had (--and as far as I know, neither in Western Europe) those "console TVs". I totally like them, but sadly we never built them.

    • @wuloki
      @wuloki 3 года назад

      What PAL does: It's exactly like NTSC... just that it saves each other's line colour information and mixes that with the other lines. This mixing gets rid of colour artifacts, which is why PAL TVs don't have a TINT-knob. It needs a sort-of-expensive delay-line though, which saves one line while the other one is being processed.

    Yes, they would still pick up the signals from low-power stations which were not required to change to digital signals on June 12th. Otherwise you somehow need to get a didital converter hooked up to it. Also, with the help of an RF Modulator/RF Switch you should be able to hook up a VCR, DVD Player, game console or any device that plug in using RCA input jacks and display its signal on either Channel 3 or Channel 4.

  • @shoemanbundy
    @shoemanbundy 15 лет назад

    Do old Tvs like this still pick up analog broadcast signals? Also, just how many modern video devices, such as video payers and gaming machines, can be hooked up to old tvs like this? I don't know anything about old Tvs so these questions came right to mind after seeing this video.

    I have had mainly satisfactory results and accurate pictures by using DVDs and other media to adjust the two basic(black & white) or five basic(color) TV picture settings to reference patterns on the media.
    The vast majority of TV viewers watch their sets with the controls set to what ever they were at the factory, and most don’t know what each control (Contrast, Brightness, Color, etc) actually adjusts.

    When did "The Tonight Show" aired its first color show on NBC? Was it a couple of months before this clip? You notice that Johnny is sitting with Woody Allen at the start of this: He was on almost all of the New Year's Eve shows (much like what Regis Philbin does when he comes on Letterman in recent years) during the 1960's. You heard there's a new "Tonight Show With Johnny Carson" DVD boxset that includes clips from the mid-60's that were considered lost but now found and some are in color.

    Hi Doug,
    This is a very nice looking television set. If you still have this TV, it would be interesting to see the inside. Is it possible to connect a 4x6 speaker and mount it where the grill is; what you would have is a TV with sound coming from the bottom and the right side at the same time, or put a switch to choose the speaker that can play. Like for movies, use the bigger speaker and for regular TV vewing use the little speaker. Just a thought :)
