  • I had a lovely playful time yesterday, swatching and choosing a limited watercolour palette of nine, for a super-cute new little travel palette!
    (Edit: For anyone wondering about the black box that appears on the screen at one point - it originally contained a picture of the A. Gallo's watercolour set which I was talking about at the time, but it hadn't uploaded. The link is below if you're interested.)

    I love to get tubes and mix custom colours for different pallets as well! It’s nice to figure out ‘dupes’ for brands I can’t afford or are very hard or impossible to get in Canada. I prioritize tubes useful for mixing my own custom colours.

    Just purchased this a couple of months ago. It is a joy to use. Removed the paint they provided, and put my own favorite colors inside. It’s worth having it for me. Wish they gave an option to buy it empty. It’s used in the car on trips with water brushes. Enjoyed it so much just purchased another one. This time only purchased the paint container without the clips and the bag. Use one in the full leather clip, and the other one is in the bag using my own clip.
    Recent update: It fell on the floor, accidentally stepped on it with full weight. It did not break or crack. Super impressed. Would recommend definitely would buy again.😊👍

      @ the colors in my palette are Daniel Smith: Hansa Yellow, New Gamboge, Moonglow, & French Ultramarine. Meiliang: Olive Green #447, Primary Red Magents #256, Rosa Red #502, Quinacridone Violet Reddish #467, & Sienna #074. In the future might swap out Rosa Red #502. ☺️ Haven’t removed the colors from the second purchase yet.

    15:04 ❤ your Notturno. Here is a tip. Mixing can go easier if you use a small palette knife on a flat ceramic plate. You don't need water at all and the paint does notnget "stuck" on the brush. Its also easier to transfer to the half pan. Hope this helps.

    The naturno reminds me a lot of DS shadow violet in its vibe/attitude. The Naturno is more purple and the DS has black in it. But it might suit your painting style

    • @booksareareason

      Might be closer to moonglow but I'm partial to shadow violet

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  2 месяца назад

      Thank you! My Notturno is a bluer kind of purple than my Moonglow. I've not tried Shadow Violet, but to be honest I don't use my Moonglow much nowadays, because both it and Shadow Violet are not lightfast.

    I enjoyed listening to you. Your choices are 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. I found this palette in 🇩🇪 for 5€ and got a few to play around. I added a phone holder ring at the back, to hold it in my hand. Mine came empty, withiut the green pouch and without paints. I can make my own palette and little pouch. Pity that regular pans dont fit. Perhaps 1/4 pans might fit?

    I have A Gallo’s 12 pan Signature palette which I think you have too? Includes all the colours from that 6 pan set except that it’s Azo Yellow instead of Quin Gold. I love it so much. Harbour Blue and Notturmo are two of my favourite colours.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  2 месяца назад

      Yes! I think it's a really exciting set of 12 - different from a regular mixing palette. Fig Green has become a favourite too.

      @zoewhite7705 2 месяца назад

      @helencryer Me too on the Fig Green - I didn’t think I’d use it much initially but it’s really lovely! The only colour I’m not using much is Transparent Red Oxide, just don’t love it for the kind of things I paint. Can imagine it would be very useful for Italian buildings though…

    I love notturno, now I need to see if I can mix it with my tube paints! I saw that little palette on Lindsay’s (frugal crafter) channel a while back and thought it was cute; I love the little faux leather pouch it comes with. The only thing that I think would really annoy me is how the little mixing trays are attached so they cover a tiny portion of the paints.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  2 месяца назад

      It's a gorgeous colour, and I don't even like purple much!
      Yes, they cover them up a little, but the opening is still about as wide as a half pan, so I'm not too bothered.

      I don't think it would be too hard - they're just held in by a couple of little plastic bobbles on each side of the tray - you could use a knife to pull back the bits that the plastic bobbles fit into.

    I find it strange that MMG calls PY150 green gold as PY150 is usually nickle azo yellow (which I love). And PY129 is what I have seen as a single pigment green gold.

    • @tdelphia1
      @tdelphia1 2 месяца назад

      Totally agree! PY150 is not only a fabulous mixing yellow, but in mass tone looks yellow ochre-ish while tinting out to a glorious, transparent neutral yellow. PY129 DEFINITELY leans green. If I have PY129 on my palette, it actually sits with the greens rather than the yellows.

      Yep, I find lots of paint names a bit weird across brands, and mainly just use pigment numbers.

    For shadows, take a look sometime at Terry Harrison's Shadow, which is nice and transparent, shows the underlying colours well. Or Rosa's Violet Black, but it's a little more opaque.
